Deacon Robert Kinghorn - homilist
From the historic Loretto Abbey Chapel with the kind cooperation of the Toronto Catholic District School Board, the National Catholic Broadcasting Council presents the Daily TV Mass.
SPEAKER_01Welcome to the celebration of the Daily TV Mass on Father Hank van Mijel, and today our homelist is Deacon Robert Kinghorn. The televising of this mass is made possible by the contribution from two donors. The first is an anonymous donor from Lakeland, Florida, for living and deceased family members and for the souls in purgatory. The second is Rita Torklinson in support of the daily TV Mass, or thanks to our donors for the gift of this Mass. My dear friends, as we begin our journey through Holy Week, I invite you to join us for two special reflections in place of the daily TV Mass on Good Friday and Holy Saturday. On Good Friday, please join Father Peter Choi as we reflect on the Passion of our Lord according to the Gospel of John, contemplating the love that laid itself down for our salvation. On Holy Saturday, Father Eric Ernie de Cicero will lead us in a reflection titled, Blessed Are Those Who Mourn, as we keep vigil in the silence of the tomb, holding sorrow and hope together. Then, on Easter Sunday, we warmly invite you and your family to join us for the Mass of the Resurrection of the Lord, celebrating together the new life Christ brings into the world. In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, Amen. The peace of the Lord be with you.
SPEAKER_07And with your Spirit.
SPEAKER_01And as we have placed ourselves before the Lord on this Monday of Holy Week, again recalling our own weakness, our own need for God's guidance. You were sent to heal the contrite of heart. Lord have mercy. You came to call sinners, Christ have mercy. You are seated at the right hand of the Father to intercede for us. Lord have mercy. May Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. And let us pray. Grant we pray, Almighty God, that though in our weakness we fall, we may be revived through the passion of your only begotten Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen.
SPEAKER_00A reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah. Thus says the Lord, here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen in whom my soul delights. I have put my spirit upon him. He will bring forth justice to the nations. He will not cry or lift up his voice or make it heard in the street. A bruised reed he will not break, and a dimly burning wick he will not quench. He will faithfully bring forth justice. He will not grow faint or be crushed until he has established justice in the earth, and the coastlands wait for his teachings. Thus says God, the Lord, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people upon it, and spirit to those who walk in it. I am the Lord, I have called you in righteousness, I have taken you by the hand and kept you. I have given you as a covenant to the people, a light to the nations, to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison, those who sit in darkness. The word of the Lord.
SPEAKER_05When evil doors save me to devour my flesh, my adversaries and foes, they shall stumble and fall.
SPEAKER_02A reading from Holy Gospel according to John. Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, the home of Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. There they gave a dinner for him, and Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those at the table with him. Mary took a pound of costly perfume made of pure nard, anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped them with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of a perfume, but Judas Iscariot, one of the disciples, the one who was about to betray him, said, Why has this perfume not been sold for three hundred denarii and the money given to the poor? He said this not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief and he kept a common person, used to steal from it. Jesus said, Leave her alone. She bought it so that she might keep it for the day of my burial. You always have a poor with you, but you do not always have me with you. When the great crowd of the Jews learned that he was there, they came not only because of Jesus, but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. So the chief priest planned to put Lazarus to death as well, since it was on account of him that many of the Jews were deserting and were believing in Jesus. The gospel of the Lord. It said, talk about Jesus, like a sapling he grew up, a man of sorrows and familiar with suffering. Ours were the sufferings he bore, and through his wounds we are healed. So there you have it. The divine mystery laid bare before us as we enter Holy Week. Ours were the sufferings he bore. He is the one who suffers with us. What a consolation for all of those who are asking for help in the prayers. Those who maybe are the ones who are asking for this must to be said, each of us have sorrows, but they're carried with us by Jesus. It is Jesus and us together. In the Gospel of John, we hear about the journey of Jesus to Jerusalem for the Passover. The act of courage this must have been, because he knew the religious leaders were out to get him and to kill him, and yet he still continued on the journey. And we heard how he stopped at the house of Martha, Mary, and Lazarus. And in fact, Judas was there as well, who was at that time his friend. But they all seemed to know that he was on his way to death in Jerusalem when he got there. So we have here, when we hear that story of what happened, a great lesson in pastoral ministry, I think. Look at the characters. We had Martha there. Martha who got busy with the meal quickly. That's what she did, to welcome people. That's the way she could console people and welcome them. We also had Mary, and she was the one who sat with Jesus, listened to his pain, and took a position as a servant. She even got the ointment out, the ointment and expense of perfume to wipe his feet and clean his feet, which people often did when they came in off the street. A servant, the lowest person, would wipe their feet. Mary took that position. She listened to the cares of Jesus on his way to what could have been his death. Then on the other hand, the other character was Judas. True to his self, he complained about money. It seemed to be all he ever had in his mind was money. Complaining, why didn't we give this to the poor? Why didn't we give it away? Judas was really concerned about the waste of money, again showing his character. You know, there's a saying I remember hearing many years ago, that God is in our second thoughts. You know, when we've got moments of temptation, we've got thoughts that come to our mind, but it's the moment when we hesitate. It's the moment when we hesitate that we have to think, why am I doing this? Who am I hurting through what I'm doing? Who am I letting down? Is this the right thing to do? That moment we call a moment of second thoughts. So I think this was one of the lessons we have. It's a moment of the second thoughts when we have that time to think, do I choose love or do I choose selfishness in my life? So I think this is, as we prepare for Holy Week, this is one of the messages of Holy Week and of Lent itself. When we have these times when we give something up, perhaps. Moments of self-sacrifice, moments of giving to other people, moments of prayers that we do through Lent and Holy Week. Why are we doing them? We're doing them for that moment of second thoughts. When we're tempted in life, we wonder, should I do this or should I not do it? And then we pause and we hesitate, and at that moment we get the courage. We get that courage to do the right thing. Just as each of the people in this gospel reading did, they did the right thing. Because Jesus was in our midst. And Jesus, of course, is always in our midst, listening to us, helping us, being with us. So these moments in our life, when we stop and pause and have second thoughts about something, we pray to the Lord that the Lord will continue to help us and guide us and be with us. And so let us pray to the Father, the Father who sent Jesus to act through you and to and through me to be a witness of God's sustaining love in the world. So let us pray for those who are facing martyrdom around the world because of their faith. That the Holy Spirit will sustain them in their witness to the love of God. We pray to the Lord. For all those in our daily TV Mass Prayer Intentions book, we pray to the Lord. For this month's community prayer is for fathers, grandfathers, and protectors, that they may lead with wisdom and humility, inspired by the quiet faith of Saint Joseph. We pray to the Lord. Heavenly Father, as we come before you in this Lenten season to confess our sins and ask for mercy, grant that we hear the words of your Son Jesus and receive him in the Eucharist as we follow his way of love in our daily lives. Amen.
SPEAKER_01Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for through your goodness we have received the bread we offer you, fruit of the earth and work of human hands, it will become for us the bread of life. Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for through your goodness we have received the wine we offer you, fruit of the vine and work of human hands, it will become our spiritual drink. Blessed you may become God for our humble spirit and contrite heart, may we be accepted by you, O Lord, and may our sacrifice in your sight this day be pleasing to you, Lord God. Wash me, O Lord, for my iniquities, cleanse me of my sins. Thank you. Pray, my sisters and brothers, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the Almighty Father.
SPEAKER_07May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands. For the praise and glory of his name, for our good for the balls of this Holy Church.
SPEAKER_01Look graciously, O Lord, upon the sacred mysteries we celebrate here, and may what you have mercifully provided to cancel the judgment we incured bear for us fruit in eternal life. Through Christ, O Lord. The Lord be with you. Lift up your hearts. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is truly right and just a duty and of salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks, Lord, Holy Father, Almighty and Eternal God, through Christ our Lord, for the days of His saving passion and glorious resurrection are approaching, by which the pride of the ancient foe is vanquished, and the mystery of our redemption in Christ is celebrated. Through him the host of angels adores your majesty and rejoices in your presence forever. May our voices we pray join with those in one chorus of exalt praise as we acclaim.
SPEAKER_05Holy, holy, holy lord God of your glory.
SPEAKER_01And you never cease to gather a people to yourself, so that from the rising of the sun to its setting, a pure sacrifice may be offered to your name. Therefore, O Lord, we humbly implore you by the same Spirit, graciously make holy these gifts. They are brought to you for consecration, that they may become the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, at whose command we celebrate these mysteries. For on the night he was betrayed, he himself took bread, and giving you thanks, he set the blessing, broke the bread, and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this, all of you, and eat of it, for this is my body which will be given up for you. In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took the chalice and once more giving thanks, he said the blessing and gave the chalice to his disciples, saying, Take this all of you and drink from it, for this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me. Therefore, O Lord, as we celebrate the memorial of the saving passion of your Son, His wondrous resurrection and ascension into heaven, and as we look forward to His second coming, we offer you in thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice. Look, we pray, upon the oblation of your church, and recognizing the sacrificial victim by whose death you will to reconcile us to yourself. Grant that we, who are nourished by the body and blood of your Son and filled with His Holy Spirit, may become one body, one spirit in Christ. May you make of us an eternal offering to you. So that we may obtain an inheritance with your elect, especially with the most blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, the Blessed Joseph, her spouse, with the Blessed Apostles and Glorious Martyrs, and with all the saints on whose constant intercession in your presence we rely for unfailing help. May the sacrifice of all reconciliation we pray, O Lord, advance the peace and salvation of all the world. Be pleased to confirm in faith and charity your pilgrim church on earth, with your servant, Leo or Pope, Francis or Bishop, the Order Bishops, the clergy, and the entire people you have gained for your own. Listen graciously to the prayers of this family whom you have summoned before you. In your compassion, O merciful Father, gather to yourself all your children scattered throughout the world. To all departed sisters and brothers, and to all who were pleasing to you at the passing from this life, give kind admittance to your kingdom. There we hope to enjoy forever the fullness of your glory through Christ, O Lord, through whom we bestow on the world all that is good. Through him and with him and in him, O God Almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours for ever and ever. And at the Savior's command, informed by divine teaching, we dare to say, O Father, who are in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day your daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not in temptation, but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, we pray from every evil. Graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your apostles, peace I leave you, my peace I give you. Look not on our sins, but on the faith of your church, and graciously grant our peace and unity in accordance with your will, who live and reign for ever and ever. Amen. The peace of the Lord be with you always.
SPEAKER_02And with your spirit. Let us share with one another a sign of Christ's peace. Peace of Jesus.
SPEAKER_05Lamb God, you take away the sins of the world. Have mercy on us.
SPEAKER_01Behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb. Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.
SPEAKER_03My Jesus, I believe that you are present in this holy sacrament of the altar. I love you above all things, and I passionately desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come spiritually into my soul, so that I may unite myself wholly to you now and forever. Amen.
SPEAKER_01And let us pray. Visit your people, O Lord, we pray, and with ever watchful love look upon the hearts dedicated to you by means of these sacred mysteries, so that under your protection we may keep safe this remedy of eternal salvation, which by your mercy we have received. Through Christ, O Lord. The Lord be with you. And please bow your heads for final blessing. May your protection, O Lord, we pray, defend the humble and keep ever safe those who trust in your mercy, that they may celebrate the Paschal festivities, not only with boldy observance, but above all with purity of mind through Christ, O Lord. And may Almighty God bless you, Father, Son, Holy Spirit. Amen.
SPEAKER_02Go in peace, glorifying the Lord by your life.
SPEAKER_03Thanks be to God.
SPEAKER_04Our thanks to our donors for the gift of this man.
