From the historic Loreto Abbey Chapel. With the kind cooperation of the Toronto Catholic District School Board, the National Catholic Broadcasting Council presents the Daily TV Mass.
SPEAKER_06Welcome to the celebration of the Daily TV Mass on the Holy Thursday, the beginning of the Easter Tridium. I'm Father Hank van Meyle. The televising of this Mass is made possible by the contribution from Sabine Rosario from Vancouver, British Columbia. This Mass is offered in loving memory of her mother, Sheila, who passed away on April 4, 2013, and for the living and deceased members of the Rosario, McLaren, Ambrose, Berthaw, and Lopez families, for the children and the family members to return to their faith for the healing of family and friends and for peace in the home and the world. The Mass of the Lord's Supper is usually celebrated on Holy Thursday evening. Due to the limitations of TV and time available, we have made a few modifications to this Mass. My dear friends, as we enter the sacred tritium today, we invite you to journey with us through these holiest days of our faith. Tomorrow, on Good Friday, join Father Peter Choi as we reflect on the Passion of our Lord according to the Gospel of John, contemplating love and laid itself down for our salvation. On Holy Saturday, Father Ernie the CCO will lead us in a reflection titled, Blessed Are Those Who Mourn, as we keep vigil in the silence of the tomb, holding sorrow and hope together. These reflections will be offered in place of the regular daily TV mass on these two solemn days. Then, on Easter Sunday, we warmly invite you and your family to join us for the Mass of the Resurrection of the Lord, celebrating together the new life Christ brings to the world. In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, Amen. The peace of the Lord be with you. And as we have placed ourselves before the Lord on this Holy Thursday, again recalling our own weakness as we enter the Easter tritium. You were sent to heal the contrite of heart. Lord have mercy. You came to call sinners. Christ have mercy. You are seated at the right hand of the Father to intercede for us. Lord have mercy. May Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. And on this Holy Thursday we again say the Gloria. Glory to God in the highest. And on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory. Lord God, Heavenly King, O God Almighty Father, Lord Jesus Christ, only begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. You take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. You are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us, for you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the most high Jesus Christ with the Holy Spirit in the glory of God the Father. Amen. And let us pray. O God, who have called us to participate in this most sacred supper, in which you, your only begotten Son, who about to hand himself over to death, entrusted to the church a sacrifice new for all eternity, the banquet of his love. Grant we pray that we may draw from so great a mystery the fullness of charity and of life. True, O Lord, Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever.
unknownAmen.
SPEAKER_05A reading from the book of Exodus. The Lord said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, this month shall mark for you the beginning of months. It shall be the first month of the year for you. Tell the whole congregation of Israel that on the tenth of this month they are to take a lamb for each family, a lamb for each household. If a household is too small for a whole lamb, it shall join its closest neighbor in obtaining one. The lamb shall be divided in proportion to the number of people who eat of it. Your lamb shall be without blemish, a year old male. You may take it from the sheep or from the goats. You shall keep it until the fourteenth day of this month. Then the whole assembled congregation of Israel shall slaughter it at twilight. They shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and the lintel of the houses in which they eat it. They shall eat the lamb that same night. They shall eat it roasted over the fire with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. This is how you shall eat it, your loins girded, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand, and you shall eat it hurriedly. It is the Passover of the Lord, for I will pass through the land of Egypt that night, and I will strike down every firstborn in the land of Egypt, both human beings and animals. On all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments. I am the Lord. The blood shall be assigned for you on the houses where you live. When I see the blood I will pass over you, and no plague shall destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt. This day shall be a day of remembrance for you. You shall celebrate it as a festival to the Lord. Throughout your generations you shall observe it as a perpetual ordinance with the word of the Lord.
SPEAKER_03I will call the name of the law. Precious in the sight of the blood is the death of his faithfulness. I am your servant, the sign of your serving. You have lost my boss. The cup of blessing that we bless is a sharing of Christ.
SPEAKER_05A reading from the first letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians. Brothers and sisters, I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus, on the night when he was betrayed, took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me. In the same way he took the cup also after supper, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this as often as you drink it in remembrance of me. For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. The word of the Lord.
SPEAKER_06Before the festival of the Passover, Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart from this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. The devil had already put into the heart of Judas, son of Isaac, to betray him. And during supper, Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hand, and that he had come from God and was going to God, got up from the table, took off his outer robe, and tied a towel around himself. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel that was tied around him. He came to Simon Peter and said to him, Lord, are you going to wash my feet? Jesus answered, You do not know now what I'm doing what I'm doing, but later you will understand. Peter said to him, You will never wash my feet. Jesus answered, Until, unless I wash you, you have no share with me. Simon Peter said to him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head. Jesus said to him, One who has bathed does not need to wash, except for the feet, but is entirely clean, and you are clean, though not all of you, for he knew who was to betray him. For this reason he said, Not all of you are clean. After he had washed their feet, put on his robe, and returned to the table, Jesus said to him, Do you know what I have done to you? You call me teacher and Lord, and you are right, for that is what I am. So if I, your Lord and teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet, for I have set you as an example that you also should do as I have done to you, the gospel of the Lord. It will be a short homily, but the washing of the feet is so central of our faith, to be servants of others. And in Jesus' time, as everyone walked, most people walked on bare feet, the servant of the house or the slave of the house would wash the feet of any visitor. And so Jesus turns this culturally around and he washes the feet, coming the servant of all. And this is our Easter journey to become servants of all as we celebrate that incredible miracle of the resurrection in a few days from now, on Easter Sunday. And so in one the second reading of Corinthians really recalls the St. Paul is recalling the institution of the Eucharist, the bread becoming the body of Christ and the wine becoming the blood of Christ, which we consume each Sunday or preferably each day, many of us, of course, each day. And this is so instrumental to become servants of God. The more we consume the body and blood of Christ, the more hopefully we also become more Christ-like, and the more we are people for others. And it really is as simple as that. And in the first reading of Exodus, we have that recalling of the great Exodus from Egypt, that sacred meal they had before the Exodus, that God that they marked the houses. I am a Jew, and they literally marked it the lintels of the houses with the blood. We carry, most of us carry a crucifix to say we are Christians, we belong to God, we do not belong to the world. And so it is so important to be people of the Eucharist and to live out the Eucharist and not to be ashamed of being a Christian, not to be afraid to show it as we go out in public places, as we sit in a restaurant to make that sign of the cross before a meal and bless the food which we and bless the people who have made the food with their loving hands. It is so important to do. And as the we in the Psalm, as we shared, the refrain, the cup of blessing that we bless is a sharing in the blood of Christ. We want to share in the blood of Christ. We want to be Christ-like, and we want to be people of Christ in our families, to be that sign for those who have walked away from the faith, those who are still searching, those who are still who want to come closer to Christ. It is a journey. And so again, this tritium we renew our faith in Jesus. And especially on Sunday, Sunday, Easter Sunday, that we really celebrate that resurrection of Christ, which we actually celebrate every Sunday. But it's so important to realize that we are people of the Eucharist. Amen. So let us bring our prayers before the Lord. We pray for all those listed in the Daily TV Mass Prayer Intention Book. We pray to the Lord. And for these prayers, and the prayers in the silence of our own hearts, we lift them up to you, Lord.
SPEAKER_05Amen.
SPEAKER_06Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for through your goodness we have received the bread we offer you, fruit of the earth and work of human hands. It will become for us the bread of life. By the mystery of this water and wine, may we come to share in the divinity of Christ who humbled himself to share in our humanity. Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for through your goodness we have received the wine we offer you, fruit of the vine and work of human hands. It will become our spiritual drink. Wash me, O Lord, from my iniquities, cleanse me of my sins. Thank you. Pray, my sisters and brothers, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God the Almighty Father.
SPEAKER_05May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name for our beloved of all of our holy churches.
SPEAKER_06Grant us, O Lord, we pray, that we may participate wordily in these mysteries, for whenever the memorial of this sacrifice is celebrated, the work of our redemption is accomplished through Christ our Lord. The Lord be with you. Lift up your hearts. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks, Lord, Holy Father, Almighty and Eternal God, through Christ our Lord. For He is the true and eternal priest who instituted the pattern of our everlasting sacrifice and was the first to offer himself as the saving victim, commanding us to make this offering as his memorial. As we eat this flesh that was sacrificed for us, we are made strong, and as we drink this blood that was poured out for us, we are washed clean. And so, with angels and archangels, with thrones and dominions, and with all the hosts and powers of heaven, we sing the hymn of your glory as without end we acclaim.
SPEAKER_03Holy, holy, holy fall of your glory I saw the comes in thy name of the You are indeed holy, O Lord, the fount of all holiness.
SPEAKER_06Make holy therefore these gifts we pray, by sending down your spirit upon them like the dofall, so that they may become for us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. At the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion, he took bread and giving you thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this all of you and eat of it, for this is my body, which will be given up for you. In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took the chalice, and once more giving thanks, he gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this all of you, and drink from it, for this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me, the mystery of faith.
SPEAKER_03We proclaim your death, and profess your rise until you come on.
SPEAKER_06Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection, we offer you, Lord, the bread of life and the chalice of salvation, giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you. Humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of Christ, we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit. Remember, Lord, your church spread throughout the world, and bring her to the fullness of charity, together with Leo or Pope, Francis or Bishop, the Order Bishops, the clergy, and the entire people you have called your own. Remember also our sisters and brothers who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection, and all who have died in your mercy. Welcome them into the light of your face. Have mercy on us all. We pray that with the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with Blessed Joseph, your spouse, with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages, we may merit to be co-heirs to eternal life, and may praise and glorify you through your Son, Jesus Christ. Through him and with him and in him, O God Almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours for ever and ever.
SPEAKER_05Amen.
SPEAKER_06And at the Savior's command, informed by divine teaching, we dare to say, Our Father, who are in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day your daily bread and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, we pray from every evil. Graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Saviour, Jesus Christ.
SPEAKER_05For the kingdom, the power and glory are yours, now and forever.
SPEAKER_06Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your apostles, peace I leave you, my peace I give you. Look not on our sins, but on the faith of your church, and graciously grant our peace and unity in accordance with your will, who live and reign forever and ever.
SPEAKER_02Amen.
SPEAKER_06The peace of the Lord be with you always. And let us offer each other a sign of peace. Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb. Lord, I am not ready that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed. May the body of Christ keep us safe for the life.
SPEAKER_04Please join me now in this act of spiritual communion. My Jesus, I believe that you are present in this holy sacrament of the altar. I love you above all things, and I passionately desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come spiritually into my soul, so that I may unite myself wholly to you now and forever. Amen.
SPEAKER_06And let us pray. Grant, Almighty God, that just as we are renewed by the supper of your Son in this present age, so we may enjoy this His banquet for all eternity, who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen. The Lord be with you. And may Almighty God bless you, Father, Son, Holy Spirit. Amen. Go in peace, glorifying the Lord by your life. Thanks be to God.
SPEAKER_00Our thanks to our donor for the gift of this mass.
SPEAKER_01We gather we stay with God is all we gather with Jesus is so. We gather we faith with the spirit of God. We gather together with God.
