Welcome to the celebration of the Daily TV Mass. I am Father Vijay Amir Daraj. The televising of this Mass is made possible by the contributions from three donors. The first is Noel de Sousa from Scarborough, Ontario, in memory of his parents, Ferdinand and Marina de Sousa, and for the deceased members of the D Sousa and Mentonka families. The second is an anonymous donor from Mississauga, Ontario, in Thanksgiving for blessings received during an almost 36-year career in Catholic education with the Dufferin Peel Catholic District School Board. The third are David and Debbie Muse from Britain Lake, Alberta, for the living and deceased members of the Muse and Fontaine families. Our thanks to all our donors for the gift of this Mass. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. The grace and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. And be with your spirit. Sisters and brothers, turning to our loving and merciful God, we seek God's mercy for our sins. You were sent to heal the contrite of God. Lord have mercy. You came to call sinners, Christ have mercy. You are seated at the right hand of the Father to intercede for us. Lord have mercy. May Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. Amen. Let us pray. Grant Almighty and Merciful God that we may in truth receive a share in the resurrection of Christ your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen.

A reading from the Acts of the Apostles. While Paul and Silas were in Philippi, the crowd joined in attacking them. And the magistrates had them stripped of their clothing and ordered them to be beaten with rods. After they had given Paul and Silas a severe flogging, they threw them into prison and ordered the jailer to keep them securely. Following these instructions, he put them in the innermost cell and fastened their feet in the stocks. About midnight, Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God. And the prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there was an earthquake so violent that the foundations of the prison were shaken. And immediately all the doors were opened and everyone's chains were unfastened. When the jailer woke up and saw the prison doors wide open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself since he was supposed since he supposed that the prisoners had escaped. But Paul shouted in a loud voice Do not harm yourself for we are all here. The jailer called for lights and rushing in, he fell down trembling before Paul and Silas. Then he brought them outside and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? They answered, Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household. Paul and Silas spoke the word of the Lord to him and all who were in his house. At the same hour of the night he took them and washed their wounds. Then he and his entire family were baptized without delay. He brought them up into the house and set food before them, and he and his entire household rejoiced that he had become a believer of in God. The word of the Lord.

SPEAKER_03

Before the gods I sing your praise. For your steadfast love and faithfulness. Your right hand has saved me, O Lord. For you have exalted your name, and you word above everything. On the day I called, you answered me. You increased my strength of soul. Your right hand has saved me, O Lord. Your right hand delivers me. The Lord will fulfill its purpose for me. Your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands. Your right hand has saved me, O Léo. The Lord says, I will send you the spirit of truth who will lead you to the whole truth.

SPEAKER_02

The Lord be with you, and with your spirit. Reading from the Holy Gospel according to John.

SPEAKER_04

Glory to you, O Lord.

When Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart from this world and go to the Father, he said to the disciples, Now I am going to him who sent me. Yet none of you asks me, Where are you going? But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts. Nevertheless, I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away. For if I do not go away, the advocate will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will prove the world wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment, about sin, because they do not believe in me. About righteousness, because I am going to the Father, and you will see me no longer. About judgment, because the ruler of this world has been condemned. The Gospel of the Lord. But he had a slave who always said, My king, God is good. God is always good. One day they went hunting, and along the way, a wild animal attacked the king. The slave managed to save the king, but the king lost one of his fingers. Furious and without showing any gratitude for being saved, the nobleman said, If God was so good, I would not have been attacked and lose my finger. The slave replied, My king, despite all these things, I can only tell you that God is good and God knows why all these things are happening. Outraged by this response, the king threw the slave into prison. Shortly after, the king left for another hunt and was captured by savages who made human sacrifices. And in the altar, ready to sacrifice the king, the savages found that the king did not have one of his fingers, which was not acceptable to their guards. So he was released. Upon his return to the palace, the king authorized the release of his slave from prison and received him very affectionately and said, My dear slave, God was really good to me. I was almost killed by this wild man. But because of that one single finger which I did not have, they let me go. But then I have a question for you. The king said, If God is so good, why did he allow me to put you in prison? And the slave replied, My dear king, if I had gone with you in this hunt, I would have been sacrificed instead of you, because I have no missing finger. Therefore, remember, God is always good. Now, sisters and brothers, today's first reading is a beautiful example of how God can work something good out of what might seem tragic or unacceptable in human eyes. Now, Paul and Silas had no idea what God was up to. They were pretty sure, though, that God did not want them to languish in prison for the rest of their lives. But they did not know whether to pray for a miraculous release or for the dismissal of the charges against them or for a legal victory. But they knew this: God was in church and could use every circumstance to bring glory to his name. So they began praising God aloud, singing songs of joy and victory. And God, as we heard, acted dramatically to open the prison doors and then eventually to open the heart of the jailer and to bring him and his entire household to conversion. Now, sisters and brothers, adversaries and challenges of life will confront every one of us, saints and sinners alike. How do we deal with them? How do we face them? These are the questions that are put before us as we come together to celebrate this Eucharist. Now the most common human response is to be filled with fear or to become anxious or to make a rash decision or to get upset with other people around us or even with God. But what is the Christian response? What is our response as a person of faith? Consider the example set by Paul and Silas in prison. And remember that our behavior may also affect other people around us. What another sees in us in times of trouble can have a very deep impact. They may see how we handle a situation and use us as their example to follow. A while ago I came across this quote from one Joseph Campbell. The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek. Now Paul and Silas did not plan to go to prison. And when it happened, probably they were fearful, like the apostles in today's gospel, who were fearful when Jesus spoke to them about his departure from them. Yet they were willing to surrender to God and continue to praise and give him thanks even in shackles. They were willing to enter the cave of suffering, and there they found the treasure of the faith in the jailer and his family. People like Paul and Silas continue to inspire us in our worn call to witness, both in good and challenging times. Today we pray for their intercession. And now let us offer our prayers to God with faith. For all those in our daily TV Mass Prayer Intentions book, we pray to the Lord. Throughout this month of May, our community prays to follow the example of Mary by offering joy, compassion, and mercy, especially to mothers, grandmothers, and all who lovingly serve those in need. We pray to the Lord. For all of us partaking in this Eucharist, that we may be blessed with boldness and courage, like Paul and Silas, to proclaim the gospel of Christ. We pray to the Lord. Lord, hear our prayer. Loving God, we lift up all of these prayers to you. Answer them through Christ our Lord. Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for through your goodness we have received the bread we are for you. Fruit of the earth and work of human hands, it will become for us our spiritual food. Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for through your goodness we have received the wine we offer you, fruit of the wine, and work of human hands, it will become for us our spiritual drink. Grant, we pray, O Lord, that we may always find delight in these paschal mysteries, so that the renewal constantly at work within us may be the cause of our unending joy through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. Lift up your hearts. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is truly right and just our duty and our salvation at all times to acclaim you, O Lord, but in this time above all, to Lord You yet more gloriously when Christ our Passover has been sacrificed. For he is the true Lamb who has taken away the sins of the world. By dying he has destroyed our death, and by rising restored our life. Therefore, overcome with paschal joy, every land, every people exalts in your praise, and even the heavenly powers with the angelic hosts sing together the unending hymn of your glory as they acclaim.

SPEAKER_03

Holy, holy, holy lord God of hosts, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hostanna in the blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hostanna in the You are indeed holy, O Lord, the founder of all holiness.

SPEAKER_02

Make holy therefore these gifts we pray, by sending down your Spirit upon them like the dew fall, so that they may become for us the body and the blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. At the time he was betrayed, and he entered willingly into his passion. He took bread and giving thanks broke it, and he gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this all of you, and eat of it, for this is my body which will be given up for you. In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took the chalice, and once more giving thanks, he gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this, all of you, and drink from it, for this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of Me the mystery of faith.

SPEAKER_03

We proclaim your death, O Lord, and profess your resurrection until you come again.

SPEAKER_02

Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection, we offer you, Lord, the bread of life and the chalice of salvation, giving thanks that you have well us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you. Humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of Christ, we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit. Remember, Lord, your church spread throughout the world, and bring her to the fullness of charity, together with Leo, our Pope, and Francis, our bishop, and all the clergy and the people you have gathered. Remember also all our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection, and all who have died in your mercy, welcome them into the light of your face, and have mercy on us all. We pray. That with the blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with blessed Joseph her spouse, with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages, we may merit to be co heirs to eternal life and we praise and glorify you through your Son Jesus Christ. Through him and with him and in him, O God Almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours forever and ever. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, we pray from every evil, and graciously grant peace in our days, that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Lord Jesus Christ, you set your apostles, peace I leave you, my peace I give you. Look not on our sins, but on the faith of your church, and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will, who live and reign forever and ever. The peace of the Lord be with you always. And with your spirit. Let us share with one another the sign of peace.

SPEAKER_03

Have mercy on us.

SPEAKER_02

Blessed are those who are called to the supper of the Lamb.

SPEAKER_01

My Jesus, I believe that you are present in this holy sacrament of the altar. I love you above all things, and I passionately desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come spiritually into my soul, so that I may unite myself wholly to you now and forever. Amen.

SPEAKER_02

Let us pray. Hear, O Lord, our prayers, that this most holy exchange, by which you have redeemed us, may bring your help in this present life and ensure for us eternal gladness through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. May Almighty God bless you, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen. Go forth, the Mass is ended.

SPEAKER_04

Thanks be to God.

SPEAKER_01

Our thanks to our donors for the gift of this Mass.
