Fr. Vijai Amirtharaj, CSC
From the St. Ignatius Chapel at the Manresa Jesuit Spiritual Renewal Center in Pickering, Ontario. The National Catholic Broadcasting Council presents the Sunday TV Mass.
SPEAKER_04Welcome to the celebration of the Sunday TV Mass on the solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord. I am for the Vijay Amir Taraj. The televising of this Mass is made possible by the contributions from three donors. The first is for the departed soul of Richard Dayas, Good Health for Teresa Dayas, Tracy Fernandez, and for the health and renewed faith of the entire family. The second is an anonymous donor from Wingham, Ontario, in memory of her husband who passed away in 2003 for her living and deceased family members and in thanksgiving for the daily TV Mass and those who make it possible. The third is an anonymous donor from Magdalene Islands, Quebec, in memory of her sisters, Ruth and Madonna, grandparents Douglas and Euphemia Clark, and parents Cameron and Eileen Clark for the souls of her loved ones, Colin and Clint Clark, her friends Till and Donald, the souls in purgatory, and for those who have no one to pray for them. Our thanks to our donors for the gift of this Mass. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. The Lord be with you. Sisters and brothers, let us acknowledge our sins and seek mercy and forgiveness from God. Lord Jesus, you are the source of love. Lord have mercy. Lord have mercy. Christ Jesus, you are the source of all faith. Christ have mercy. Lord Jesus, you are the source of our hope. Lord have mercy. May Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life.
SPEAKER_03Amen.
SPEAKER_04Glory to God in the highest. And on earth, peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory. Lord God, Heavenly King, O God Almighty Father, Lord Jesus Christ, Holy Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us, you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. You are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us, for you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. Let us pray. Gladden us with holy joys, Almighty God, and make us rejoice with devout thanksgiving, for the ascension of Christ your Son is our exaltation, and where the head has gone before in glory, the body is called to follow in hope. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God forever and ever. Amen.
SPEAKER_01A reading from the Acts of the Apostles. In the first book, Theophilus, I wrote about that Jesus did and taught from the beginning until the day when he was taken up to heaven after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. After his suffering, he presented himself alive to them by many convincing proofs appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God. While staying with them, he ordered them not to leave Jerusalem but to wait there for the promise of the Father. This, he said, is what you have heard from me for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now. So when they had come together, they asked him, Lord, is this the time when you will restore the kingdom to Israel? He replied, It is not for you to know the times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you. And you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. When he had said this, as they were watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight while he was going, and they were gazing up toward heaven, and suddenly two men in white robes stood by them. They said, Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up toward heaven? It is Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven. The word of the Lord.
SPEAKER_02Clap your hands, you people shout to God with love, songs and love child. God has gone up with a shot. Sing praises to God, sing praises. Sing praises to our king, sing praises.
SPEAKER_01A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Ephesians. Brothers and sisters. I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him, so that with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power for us who believe according to the working of his great power. God put this power to work in Christ when he raised him from the dead, and seated at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age, but also in the age to come. And he has put all things under his feet, and he has made him the head over all things for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all. The word of the Lord.
SPEAKER_02I am with you always to the end of the year. Alleluia, Hallelujah, Hallelujah.
SPEAKER_04The Lord be with you.
SPEAKER_03And with your spirit.
SPEAKER_04The eleven disciples went to Galilee to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. When they saw him, they worshiped him, but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always to the end of the age. The Gospel of the Lord. His nurse, his wife, his daughter, and his two sons are with him. And he asks for a video recorder to record his last wishes. And he begins to speak. My son Jamie, you take the offices over the city center. And Sarah, my dear wife, you take all the residential buildings on the bank of the river. The nurse and the witnesses are blown away as Duck slips away. And the nurse says to his wife, Mrs. Smith, your husband must have been a very hard-working man to have accumulated all this property. Property? His wife, Sarah, replies, he did not have any property. He had a newspaper route. Sisters and brothers, when Jesus ascended into heaven, he did not have a plan for his little community. He did not have a roadmap as to what they need to do. Rather, trusting in his father's will, he left it in the hands of his followers. Now we are all familiar with the frequently used saying, to come full circle, which means that people or things, having set out on a journey or on a task, have returned to where they started. They have successfully completed the cycle and are back at the beginning. Now, in one sense, the ascension celebrates Jesus' coming full circle because having come from his Heavenly Father to accomplish a particular mission, he returns back to the Father, having achieved what he was sent to do. But in another sense, the ascension marks the passing on of the baton by Jesus to his followers, to his apostles. During his public ministry, Jesus in his words and in his actions showed the loving nature of God. And now that responsibility for that ministry is being passed on to his followers. However, he makes it clear to them that they will not be alone in their task. I will be with you always, he tells them, not physically, but spiritually through the Holy Spirit given at Pentecost, which we will celebrate next Sunday. Now, sisters and brothers, as followers of Jesus in today's world, we are interested with the same mission today. And we too have been blessed with the gifts of the Holy Spirit in our lives. And our mission today is not to perform miracles or to work wonders. If we are able to do that, that's wonderful. But to be the loving and caring presence of Jesus today in our world. Today we also celebrate the World Day of Social Communications. And so on this day we pray for ourselves that we may be the channels through whom God's love is communicated to our families, to our communities, and to our society. And now let us profess our faith in God together. I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, the smallest Son of our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell, and the third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen. Sisters and brothers, we now offer our prayers to God. For all those in our daily TV Mass Prayer Intentions book, we pray to the Lord. Lord, hear our prayer. Throughout this month of May, our community prays to follow the example of Mary by offering joy, compassion, and mercy, especially to mothers, grandmothers, and all who lovingly serve those in need. We pray to the Lord. And for all of us celebrating this Mass that we may strive to be the healing presence of Jesus, we pray to the Lord. Lord God, hear us and hear and answer our prayers through Christ our Lord. Amen. We offer sacrifice now in supplication, O Lord, to honor the wondrous ascension of your Son. Grant, we pray that through this most holy exchange we too may rise up to the heavenly realms through Christ our Lord. The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. Lift up your hearts. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks, Lord Holy Father, Almighty and Eternal God. For the Lord Jesus, the King of glory, conqueror of sin and death, ascended to the highest heavens as the angels gazed in wonder, mediator between God and man, judge of the world and Lord of hosts, he ascended not to distance himself from our lowly state, but that we, his members, might be confident of following where he, our head and founder, has gone before. Therefore, overcome with paschal joy, every land, every people exalts in your praise, and even the heavenly powers, with the angelic hosts, sing together the unending hymn of your glory as they acclaim.
SPEAKER_02Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of hosts, heaven and earth of my father of lovey, Hosanna in the highest.
SPEAKER_04You are indeed holy, O Lord, the founder of all holiness. Make holy therefore these gifts we pray, by sending down your spirit upon them like the dew fall, so that they may become for us the body and the blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. At the time he was betrayed, and he entered willingly into his passion. He took bread and giving thanks broke it, and he gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this all of you, and eat of it, for this is my body which will be given up for you. In a similar way, when supper was ended, He took the chalice and once more giving thanks, he gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this, all of you, and drink from it, for this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me. The mystery of faith.
SPEAKER_02We proclaim your death, O Lord, and profess your resurrection until you come again.
SPEAKER_04Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection, we offer you, Lord, the bread of life and the chalice of salvation, giving thanks that you have us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you. Humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of Christ, we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit. Remember, Lord, your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity, together with Leo, our Pope, Francis, our bishop, and all the clergy and the people you have gathered. Remember also all our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection, and all who have died in your mercy, welcome them into the light of your face and have mercy on us all. We pray that with the blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with blessed Joseph Car spouse, with the blessed apostles, and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages, we may merit to be co-heirs to eternal life, and we praise and glorify you through your Son Jesus Christ. Through him and with him and in him, O God Almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor receivers forever and ever. Amen. At the Savior's command and formed by divine teaching, we now dare to pray. Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us a stay our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, we pray from every evil, and graciously grant peace in our days, that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
SPEAKER_03For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and forever.
SPEAKER_04Lord Jesus Christ, you set your apostles, peace I leave you, my peace I give you. Look not on our sins, but on the faith of your church, and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will, who live and reign forever and ever. Amen. The peace of the Lord be with you always.
SPEAKER_03And with your spirit.
SPEAKER_04Let us share with one another the sign of peace. Behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those who are called to the supper of the Lamb. Lord, I am not willing that he should enter in my life. But only say the word, my soul shall be healed.
SPEAKER_00Please join me now in this act of spiritual communion. My Jesus, I believe that you are present in this holy sacrament of the altar. I love you above all things, and I passionately desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come spiritually into my soul, so that I may unite myself wholly to you now and forever. Amen.
SPEAKER_04Almighty, ever living God, who allow those on earth to celebrate divine mysteries. Grant we pray that Christian hope may draw us onward to where our nature is united with you through Christ our Lord. The Lord be with you. And in your spirit. May Almighty God bless you, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen. Go and announce the gospel of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
SPEAKER_00Our thanks to our donors for the gift of this month.
