Fr. Henk van Meijel, S.J.
From the St. Ignatius Chapel at the Manrisa Jesuit Spiritual Renewal Center in Pickering, Ontario. The National Catholic Broadcasting Council presents the Daily TV Mass.
SPEAKER_01Welcome to the celebration of the Daily TV Mass. I'm Father Hank van Mijel. The televising of this Mass is made possible by the contribution from a family who are parishioners at St. Clement Parish in Etobicoke, Ontario. This Mass is offered for the reposed souls of Sarifka, the Susa, and for other deceased family members and for world peace. Our thanks to our donor family for making it possible for tens of thousands of the faithful across Canada, the United States, and around the world to share in this celebration. In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, Amen. The peace of the Lord be with you. And as we have placed ourselves before the Lord on this Tuesday, again recalling our own weakness, our own need for God's guidance. You were sent to heal the contrite of heart. Lord have mercy. You came to call sinners. Christ have mercy. You are seated at the right hand of the Father to intercede for us. Lord have mercy. May Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life.
unknownAmen.
SPEAKER_01And let us pray. Grant we pray, Almighty and Merciful God, that the Holy Spirit coming near and dwelling graciously within us, may make of us a perfect temple of his glory. True, O Lord, Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever.
unknownAmen.
SPEAKER_02A reading from the Acts of the Apostles. Paul, having traveled throughout Greece, was eager to be in Jerusalem, if possible, on the day of Pentecost. From Miletus, he sent a message to Ephesus asking the elders of the church to meet him. When the elders came to him, Paul said to them, You yourselves know how I lived among you the entire time, from the first day that I set foot in Asia, serving the Lord with all humility and with tears, and during the trials that came to me through the plots of the Jews, I did not shrink from doing anything helpful, proclaiming the message to you and teaching you publicly and from house to house, as I testified to both Jews and Greeks about repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus. And now, as a captive to the Spirit, I am on my way to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there, except that the Holy Spirit testifies to me in every city that imprisonment and persecutions are waiting for me. But I do not count my life of any value to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus to testify to the good news of God's grace. And now I know that none of you, among whom I have gone about proclaiming the kingdom, will ever see my face again. Therefore, I declare to you this day that I am not responsible for the blood of any of you, for I did not shrink from declaring to you the whole purpose of God. The word of the Lord.
SPEAKER_06In your goodness, O God, you provided for the need. Say to God, O kingdoms of the house. Blessed be the Lord who delivers us up. God is our salvation. Our God is a God of salvation and to God the Lord belongs escape from death. Say to God, oh kingdoms of the earth. To be with you forever.
SPEAKER_01A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John. Jesus looked up to heaven and said, Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son so that the Son may be glor may glorify you, since you have given him authority over all people, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. And this is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. I glorify you on earth by finishing the work that you gave me to do. So now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had in your presence before the world existed. I have made your name known to those whom you gave me from the world. They were yours, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything you have given me is from you, for the word that you gave to me I have given to them, and they have received them, and know in truth that I came from you, and they have believed that you sent me. I am asking on their behalf. I am not asking on behalf of the world, but on behalf of those you gave me, because they are yours. All mine are yours, and yours are mine, and I have been glorified in them, and now I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one as we are one. The Gospel of the Lord. And in this long prayer, everything of mine is yours, and everything yours is mine. It is this unity, and everything the Father God has given us is also ours. It's good stuff to pray with how God is praying for us. God is praying also for St. Paul in our first reading. Saint Paul that he also will have strength. Although St. Paul was not a disciple at that time, since St. Paul was one of the Pharisees persecuting the Christians. But Jesus prays for everyone and it resounds, resonates right through the centuries how Jesus is praying for us, individually for each one of us, that we will live a good life, that we will evangelize the good news. And this is something really to sit with, because it is such a great gift that we, each one of us, is called to evangelize and not to be afraid. God will give us the words. And so, in the first reading, as I said, Jesus is also praying for Paul, although he was not a disciple yet at that time. And Paul, who really picked up on that, and Paul who went out to evangelize after he was, so to speak, knocked off his high horse on the road to Damascus. And so St. Paul, right now, he's also to the end of his ministry as he travels along basically through today's Turkey. And he's telling them the churches he has been evangelizing to. There will be a time that we have to give up our homes, that we have to go to a nursing home, and we don't know what the future brings. But it is about embracing our lives day by day, and to give it to God and let God work through it for the good of others. And this is so important that we have that holy indifference, like St. Paul does, that let the Spirit lead us, and the Spirit will lead us. Today, by chance on the universal calendar, we celebrate Pope Saint Celestine V. And he's kind of an obscure pope, but also one who listened to the Spirit. And actually, he was only Pope for five months. It went on for about two years, and he he wrote to the popes. His name was at that time Pedro Angelirio. He was a hermit, and but he wrote to them: if you don't choose a new pope, something will happen to you. You have to choose a new leader of the church. And the cardinals, in their own way, this was in 1294, in their own way, they said, so then Pedro is gonna be the new Pope, and he became Pope Saint Celestian V. But this is also God will give us energy, and but God also works through us. And if we if whatever energizes us is where God is at. And so obviously, he was not energized by being Pope. Matter of fact, he was a very poor administrator and politician. And after five months, the last degree he made was that he had the right to resign. And so he resigned after five months, and they chose a new pope, Pope Boniface VIII. And Boniface, the first thing he did was lock up his previous predecessor, and his predecessor didn't mind, he was used to to being a hermit. He locked him up so they would not be an anti-pope. But the thing is, it's about that holy indifference, listening. And listening to God also means knowing or gifts. And some of us have are energized by well, I'm energized by preaching and doing mass and saying mass and to be there. But some other people are, I'm just looking here at the cameraman, the cameramen are energized by having just the perfect image, to have everything just perfect. The organist is energized by creating or playing beautiful music which touches people's hearts. This is listening to the Holy Spirit and Jesus who prayed for each one of us. So each one of us can live out of vocation or calling of God in our own unique way. It's not about being making great impact on the world, but each in our own way. We make our own impact on the world in our own little way. And this is so important. As Jesus prayed for us, he gave us the energy to do what we had to do and to be there to evangelize God's word. And this we do in each in our own way, just like the cameraman, they are doing their thing, the organist does their thing, someone else, a housekeeper, expresses their gift of liking a clean environment and making sure that things are clean and that they do things. So the one vocation is not better than the other, but it's called a call from God and Jesus who give us the energy to move forward. Amen. So let us bring our prayers before the Lord. We pray for all those in our daily TV Mass Prayer Intention Book. We pray to the Lord.
SPEAKER_05Lord hear our prayer.
SPEAKER_01Throughout this month of May, our community prays to follow the example of Mary by offering joy, compassion, and mercy, especially to mothers, grandmothers, and all who lovingly serve those in need. We pray to the Lord. With Pope Leo, we pray this month that everyone, from large producers to small consumers, be committed to avoid wasting food and to ensure that everyone has access to quality food. We pray to the Lord. We pray for all those with leading positions in society to be persons who are open to the guidance of the Holy Spirit and be persons who work towards peace instead of division. For this we pray to the Lord. And for these prayers and the prayers in the silence of our own hearts, we lift them up to you, Lord. Amen. Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for through your goodness we've received the bread we offer you, fruit of the earth and work of human hands, it will become for us the bread of life. By the mystery of this water and wine, may we come to share in the divinity of Christ who humbled themselves to share in our humanity. Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for through your goodness we have received the wine we offer you, fruit of the vine and work of human hands. It will become our spiritual drink. Blessed be God forever.
SPEAKER_00Humble spirit and contrite heart may we be accepted by you, O Lord, and mere sacrifice in your sight this day be pleasing to you, Lord God.
SPEAKER_01Wash me, O Lord, from my iniquities, cleanse me of my sins. Thank you. Pray, my sisters and brothers, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the Almighty Father.
SPEAKER_04May the Lord accept the sacrifice of your hands for the praise of the Lord and God's name for the Lord and the Lord.
SPEAKER_01Accept, O Lord, the prayers of your faithful with the sacrificial offerings, that through these acts of devoted devotedness we may pass over the glory or glory of heaven through Christ, O Lord.
SPEAKER_04Amen.
SPEAKER_01The Lord be with you. Lift up your hearts. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right and just it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation at all times to acclaim you, O Lord, but in this time above all to lord you yet more gloriously, when Christ or Passover has been sacrificed. Through him the children of light rise to eternal life, and the halls of the heavenly kingdom are thrown open to the faithful, for his death is a ransom from death, and in his rising the life of all has risen. Therefore, overcome with paschal joy, every land, every people exalts in your praise, and even the heavenly powers with the angelic host sing together the unending hymn of your glory as they acclaim.
SPEAKER_06Holy, holy, holy lord, God of hearts, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
SPEAKER_01You are indeed holy, O Lord, the fount of all holiness. Make holy therefore these gifts we pray, by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall, so that they may become for us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. At the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion. He took bread and giving you thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this all of you and eat of it, for this is my body, which will be given up for you. In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took the chalice and once more giving thanks, he gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this all of you and drink from it, for this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me. The mystery of faith.
SPEAKER_06As your resurrection until you come again.
SPEAKER_01Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection, we offer you, Lord, the bread of life and the challenge of salvation, giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you. Humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of Christ, we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit. Remember, Lord, your church spread throughout the world, and bring her to the fullness of charity, together with Leo or Pope, Francis or Bishop, the Order Bishops, the clergy, and the entire people you have called your own. Remember also our sisters and brothers who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection, and all who have died in your mercy, welcome them into the light of your face. Have mercy on us all. We pray that with the blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with the blessed Joseph, your spouse, with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages, we may merit to be co-heirs to eternal life, and may praise and glorify you through your Son, Jesus Christ. Through him and with him and in him, O God Almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, O glory and honor is yours for ever and ever. Amen. And at the Savior's command, informed by divine teaching, be dare to say, O Father, who are in heaven, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses. As we forgive those who trespass against us. And be used our brother. Deliver us, Lord, we pray from every evil. Graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your apostles, peace I leave you, my peace I give you. Look not on our sins, but on the faith of your church, and graciously grant our peace and unity in accordance with your will, who live and reign for ever and ever. Amen. The peace of the Lord be with you always. And let us offer each other a sign of peace.
SPEAKER_06Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world.
SPEAKER_01Behold the Lamb of God. Behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb. Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the words and my soul shall be healed.
SPEAKER_00The blood of Christ keep us safe for turn alive.
SPEAKER_03Please join me now in this act of spiritual communion. My Jesus, I believe that you are present in this holy sacrament of the altar. I love you above all things, and I passionately desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come spiritually into my soul, so that I may unite myself wholly to you now and forever. Amen.
SPEAKER_01Humbly imploring, O Lord, that what your Son commanded us to do in memory of him may bring us growth and charity. Through Christ, O Lord. And may Almighty God bless you, Father, Son, Holy Spirit. Amen. Go in peace, glorifying the Lord by your life.
SPEAKER_04Praise be the Lord.
SPEAKER_03Our thanks to our donors for the gift of this man.
