Fr. Vijai Amirtharaj, CSC
From the St. Ignatius Chapel at the Manresa Jesuit Spiritual Renewal Center in Pickering, Ontario. The National Catholic Broadcasting Council presents the Daily TV Mass.
SPEAKER_00Welcome to the celebration of the Daily TV Mass. I am Father Vijay Amirtaraj. The televising of this Mass is made possible by the contributions from two donors. The first is an anonymous donor from Mississauga, Ontario. The second is a resident from Holland Christian Homes in Brompton, Ontario, in thanksgiving for the comfort of the Daily TV Mass. Our thanks to our donors for the gift of this Mass. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. The grace and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. And with your spirit. Sisters and brothers, as we gather on this memorial of Saint Philip Neri, we take a moment to seek mercy and forgiveness from God. I confess to Almighty God, unto you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and what I have failed to do. Through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault. Therefore I ask, Blessed Mary of our virgin, all the angels and saints, unto you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God. May Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. Amen. Lord have mercy. Christ have mercy. Lord have mercy. Let us pray. O God, who never ceased to bestow the glory of holiness on the faithful servants you raise up for yourself, graciously grant that the Holy Spirit may kindle in us that fire with which he wonderfully filled the heart of Saint Philip Nuri. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God forever and ever. Amen. Amen.
SPEAKER_01A reading from the first letter of Peter, beloved, the prophets who prophesied of the grace that was to be yours made careful search and inquiry concerning this salvation, inquiring about the person or time that the Spirit of Christ within them indicated when it testified in advance to the sufferings and the subsequent glory destined for Christ. It was revealed to the prophets that they were serving not themselves, but you in regard to the things that have now been announced to you through those who brought you good news by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Things into which angels long to look. Therefore, prepare your minds for actions. Discipline yourselves set all your hope on the grace that Jesus Christ will bring you when he is revealed. Like obedient children, do not be conform to the desires that you formerly had in ignorance. Instead, as he who called you is holy, be holy yourselves in all your conduct. For it is written you shall be holy, for I am holy. The word of the Lord.
SPEAKER_03Make a joyful noise to the Lord all the earth, break forth into joyous song and sing praises. Blessed are you, Father, Lord of Heaven and Earth. You have revealed to little ones the mysteries of the kingdom.
SPEAKER_00Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark. Peter began to say to Jesus, Look, we have left everything and followed you. Jesus said, Truly I tell you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters, or mother, or father, or children, or fields, for my sake and for the sake of the good news, who will not receive a hundredfold now in this age houses, brothers and sisters, mothers and children, and fields with persecutions, and in the age to come eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first. The Gospel of the Lord. So he called his friend and said, Bill, I want you to promise me that when I die, you will have my remains cremated. And his friend asked, And what do you want me to do with your ashes? The man replied, just put them all in an envelope and mail them to the tax department in Ottawa. And write on the envelope, now you have everything. Now, sisters and brothers, in today's gospel from Mark, Peter says to Jesus, look, we have left everything and followed you. In Matthew's version, Peter will ask Jesus, we have left everything to follow you. What then will we get? To know this context, today's gospel passage comes right after the encounter between Jesus and the rich young man who comes to Jesus and asks him, What must I do to inherit the kingdom? The disciples must have been astounded as they watched the rich young man walk away when Jesus challenged him to let go of his possessions and then to come and follow him. The disciples thought, like many others in Jesus' time, that wealth was a sign of God's favor. Yet Jesus said that it was impossible for a rich person to enter the kingdom of heaven without God's help. Now the disciples had come on board believing that they would be rewarded for all their sacrifices to follow Jesus. But now, after this incident, they were asking among themselves, what is in it for our souls? Now Peter's questions comes from a moment of honesty or vulnerability or perhaps expectations. Peter speaks here for every disciple who has tried to take their following of Jesus seriously. Now following Jesus is not an abstract idea. It really involves sacrifice. Jesus himself said in Matthew 16, 24, if any want to follow me, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. Following Jesus involves real leaving, leaving comfort, leaving control, leaving certainty, leaving one's ego, leaving some of the habits, or leaving even our relationships with others. Now I can think of my own life. About 10 years ago, I lost my only older brother in a tragic accident at the age of 46. There was a lot of pressure put on me from or by my relatives and others to leave priesthood and come back home to take care of my parents and my family. You have committed yourself to serving the Lord, so don't allow what people tell you to disturb or distract you. We will manage things at home. Now, like Peter, we may not have physically dropped our fishing nets to follow Jesus. But we all know what it means to let go of something that was close to our hearts in order to follow Jesus. It could be some relationships, it could be some habits that was close to us, and so on. Now we also notice something important in today's gospel. Jesus does not rebuke Peter for his questioning. Instead, Jesus acknowledges the sacrifice and promises something greater. Not in the future, not just in the life to come, but even here right now, a deeper life, a transformed life, a new kind of belonging. Now, sisters and brothers, today's gospel passage invites you and me to examine our own discipleship. The questions that are put before you and me today are these. He left his family in Florence at age 18, and he never, never returned back to visit even his family. Today we pray for the intercession of Saint Philip Nery so that we may follow Jesus wholeheartedly and give praise and thanks to him always. And now let us offer our prayers and petitions to God with faith. For all those in our daily TV Mass Prayer Intentions book, we pray to the Lord.
SPEAKER_04Lord, hear our prayer.
SPEAKER_00Throughout this month of May, our community prays to follow the example of Mary by offering joy, compassion, and mercy, especially to mothers, grandmothers, and all who lovingly serve those in need. We pray to the Lord. And for all of us partaking in this Mass, that we may seek the Lord wholeheartedly and do His will, we pray to the Lord. Lord, hear our prayer. For those who are sick, for God's comfort, peace, and healing for them, and for those who have asked for our prayers. We pray to the Lord. Loving God, we lift up all of these prayers and we ask you to answer them through Christ our Lord. Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation, for through your goodness we have received the bread we offer you. Fruit of the earth and work of human hands, it will become for us our spiritual food. Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for through your goodness we have received the wine we offer you. Fruit of the vine, work up human hands. It will become for us our spiritual drink.
SPEAKER_03For the grace and glory of his name, for our good and good of all his holy church.
SPEAKER_00As we offer you the sacrifice of praise, O Lord, we ask that by the example of Saint Philip we may always give ourselves cheerfully for the glory of your name and the service of our neighbor through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. Lift up your hearts. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is truly right and just our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere, to give you thanks, Lord Holy Father, Almighty and Eternal God through Christ. For as on the festival of St. Philip Neri, you bid your church rejoice. So too, you strengthen her by the example of his holy life. You teach her by his words of preaching and keep her safe in answer to his prayers. And so, with a company of angels and saints, we sing the hymn of your praise, as with our end we acclaim.
SPEAKER_03Holy, holy, holy lord, God of hosts, heaven and earth are full of your glory. How's an inest? Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hose an You are indeed holy, O Lord, the found of all holiness.
SPEAKER_00Make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your Spirit upon them like the dew fall, so that they may become for us the body and the blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. At the time he was betrayed, and he entered willingly into his passion. He took bread and giving thanks broke it, and he gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this, all of you, and eat of it, for this is my body which will be given up for you. In a similar way, when supper was yet, he took the chalice and once more giving thanks, he gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this, all of you, and drink from it, for this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me.
SPEAKER_03We proclaim your death, O Lord, and profess your resurrection until you come again.
SPEAKER_00Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection, we offer you, Lord, the bread of life and the challenge of salvation, giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you. Humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of Christ, we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit. Remember, Lord, your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity, together with Leo, our Pope, and Francis, our bishop, and all the clergy and the people you have gathered. Remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection, and all who have died in your mercy, welcome them into the light of your face. And have mercy on us all. We pray that with the blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with blessed Joseph, her spouse, with the blessed apostles, with Saint Philip Neri, and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages, we may merry to be co-heirs to eternal life, and we praise and glorify you through your Son Jesus Christ. Through him and with him and in him, O God Almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours forever and ever. Amen. At the Savior's command and formed by divine teaching, we now dare to pray, our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us the state of thy Lord. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, we pray from every evil, and graciously grant peace in our days, that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Lord Jesus Christ, you set your apostles, peace I leave you, my peace I give you. Look not on our sins, but on the faith of your church, and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will, who live and reign forever and ever. Amen. The peace of the Lord be with you always. Let us offer to one another the sign of peace.
SPEAKER_03Lamb of God you take away the sins of the world.
SPEAKER_00Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those who are called to the supper of the Lamb.
SPEAKER_02My Jesus, I believe that you are present in this holy sacrament of the altar. I love you above all things, and I passionately desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come spiritually into my soul, so that I may unite myself wholly to you now and forever. Amen.
SPEAKER_00Let us pray. Having fed upon these heavenly delights, we pray, O Lord, that in imitation of Saint Philip, we may always long for that food by which we truly live. Through Christ our Lord. The Lord be with you.
SPEAKER_04And with your spirit.
SPEAKER_00May Almighty God bless you, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Go forth, the Mass is ended.
SPEAKER_02Our thanks to our donors for the gift of this Mass.
