From the St. Ignatius Chapel at the Manresa Jesuit Spiritual Renewal Center in Pickering, Ontario. The National Catholic Broadcasting Council presents the Daily TV Mass.
SPEAKER_06Welcome to the celebration of the Daily TV Mass. I am Father Peter J. Troy. The televising of this Mass is made possible by the contribution from the late Simone Brown of Estevan, Saskatchewan. This Mass is offered in memory of Simone, who passed away on September 11th, 2022. May her soul and the souls of the faith who departed rest in peace. Amen. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
SPEAKER_00And with your Spirit.
SPEAKER_06Brothers and sisters, let us call to mind our sins, and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries. I confess to Almighty God, and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done, in what I have failed to do, through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault. Therefore I ask blessed in Mary ever virgin, all the angels and saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God. May Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. Amen. Lord have mercy. Christ have mercy. Christ have mercy. Lord have mercy.
SPEAKER_00Lord have mercy.
SPEAKER_06Let us pray. O God, by whom we are redeemed and receive adoption. Look graciously upon your beloved sons and daughters, that those who believe in Christ may receive true freedom and an everlasting inheritance through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God forever and ever.
SPEAKER_01Amen. A reading from the first letter of Peter. Like newborn infants, you should long for the pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow into salvation, if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good. Come to him, a living stone, though rejected by mortals, yet chosen and precious in God's sight. And like living stones, let yourselves be built into a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's own people, in order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of Him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people. Once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. Beloved, I urge you as aliens and exiles, to abstain from the desires of the flesh that rage war against the soul. Conduct yourselves honorably among the Gentiles, so that though they malign you as evildoers, they may see your honorable deeds, and glorify God when he comes to judge. The word of the Lord.
SPEAKER_04Make a joyful noise to the Lord all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness, come into his presence with singing. Come with joy into the presence of the Lord. Know that the Lord is God, it is he that made us, and we are his, we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Come with joy into the presence of the Lord. Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise. Give thanks to him, bless his name, come with joy into the presence of the Lord Hallelujah, alleluja, alleluia, alleluja, aleluya, aleluia. I am the light of the world, says the Lord. Whoever follows me will have the light of life.
SPEAKER_00And with your spirit.
SPEAKER_06A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark. Jesus and his disciples came to Jericho. As he and his disciples and a large crowd were leaving Jericho, Bartimaeus, son of Timaeus, a blind beggar, was sitting by the roadside. When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout out and say, Jesus, son of David, have mercy on me. Many sternly ordered him to be quiet. But he cried out even more loudly, Son of David, have mercy on me. Jesus stood still and said, Call him here. And they called the man who was blind, saying to him, Take heart, get up, he's calling you. So throwing off his cloak, he sprang up and came to Jesus. Then Jesus said to him, What do you want me to do for you? The blind man said to him, My teacher, let me see again. Jesus said to him, Go, your faith has made you well. Immediately Bartimaeus regained his sight and followed Jesus on the way. The Gospel of the Lord. There was once a small farming community that was experiencing severe drought. They were in desperate need of rain. So the parish priest asked all the townspeople to come together to the church parking lot on Sunday evening to pray for rain. And he asked them to bring something that represented their faith. As you can imagine, hundreds of people gathered together to pray for rain while holding up their crucifixes, rosaries, statues of the Blessed Mother and other saints. Then the priest spotted a young girl who was holding an umbrella. Curious, the priest asked the girl why she brought a non-religious item. She replied, Because when God sends us the rain, I don't want to get wet. Out of all the people, who do you really think had faith? Of course, God always listens to our prayers. But God doesn't always answer when and how we want Him to respond. So in the meantime, when we are being impatient, we turn to quick and easy band-aid solutions instead. We want to take a pill to help us lose weight rather than changing our lifestyle like going on a diet and exercising. We want to say one prayer that will make all our problems disappear rather than working through our problems. Unfortunately, life doesn't quite work that way. It takes time to learn, to grow, and to heal. The gospel today doesn't give us much detail about Bartimaeus. How old was he? How long has he been sitting by the roadside being blind and begging for alms? Maybe months? Or even years? Did you notice that there were a whole crowd of people in need of healing? And the only person that got healed was Bartimaeus. He, in fact, was the last person Jesus healed before he entered Jerusalem to face his passion and death on the cross. Over the years, I've seen quite a number of religious paintings. And the one that I like is the painting of blind Bartimaeus. In the painting that I saw, Bartimaeus is seen walking towards Jesus with a cloak already on the ground. As he's taking a step forward towards Jesus, Bartimaeus is literally throwing away his walking stick. The painting portrayed a man who was filled with confident faith and hope that Jesus would heal him. And that he was not going to need his walking stick anymore. It's been said the day the blind man sees, the first thing he throws away is the stick that helped him all his life. And that is exactly what happened to Bartimaeus. Often, we too are holding on to the walking sticks of our life because we depend on them. And that dependence is often what prevents us from seeking God. When Jesus asked Bartimaeus, What do you want me to do for you? He immediately responded, My teacher, let me see again. Interestingly, Jesus said, Go, your faith has made you well. This saying appears only twice in St. Mark's Gospel. Once when a woman who suffered with hemorrhages for twelve years, when she touched just the fringe of Jesus' cloak, she was instantly healed. Jesus praised her for her faith. In today's gospel, Jesus praised Bartimaeus for his faith. Your faith has made you well. If you had been blind and regained your sight, what would you do? Where would you go? I'm thinking, family, friends, places. But that's not what Bartimaeus did. After regaining his sight, when Jesus told him he could go, he didn't go anywhere. He stayed with Jesus and followed him. It's hard to imagine that I've been a priest for 20 years. And one of the most intriguing things that I find is a wedding interview. Over the years, I've asked the same question to every single couple whose wedding I've officiated at. You would think that there would be a variety of answers, but it's always the same answer. So, what is the question that I ask, you may wonder? When I ask couples, how did you know if he or she was the one? They always answer with a smile on their faces, we just knew. It's one of those things. If you know, you know. And if you don't, you don't. No one can teach you that. Our life can be like that. If you don't know where to find happiness, you can spend your entire life looking for it. You work hard to achieve your goals and dreams, and one day you realize you can't find happiness in your career. You look for happiness in things, and it's not there either. Sometimes you look for happiness in relationships, expecting your partner to make you happy, only to be disappointed. That is because we are made for God, and eternal happiness only God can provide. So we make a full circle back to God, and God is where we find our life's purpose, happiness, and meaning. Just like the married couple I've interviewed, when they found the one, their search came to an end. I'm sure it was similar to Bartimaeus. He has experienced God's love, and all he ever wanted to do from that moment on was to follow Jesus. Now, going back to the gospel, there were some who were trying to silence Bartimaeus, trying to tell him to be quiet. But then there were others who were listening to Jesus and encouraging him to get up and go to Jesus. Alexander Schulz-Nitson said, the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being. There isn't a need division of people. The good people over here and the evil people over there, every one of us is capable of doing good and evil. Every one of us is capable of judging others based on their social status. We can easily silence the voice or dismiss the needs of someone like Bartimaeus in our own lives because they do not seem important. But every one of us is capable of seeing those who are broken and are suffering with the eyes of Jesus. We can take notice and do something. We can lead them to God. Or as St. Teresa of Avila said, we can be the hands and the feet of Christ and bring God's love to them. Let us offer our intentions to God our Father, whom we know loves us. For all those in our daily TV Mass Prayer Intentions book, we pray to the Lord.
SPEAKER_00Lord, hear our prayer.
SPEAKER_06Throughout this month of May, our community prays to follow the example of Mary by offering joy, compassion, and mercy, especially to mothers, grandmothers, and all who lovingly serve those in need. We pray to the Lord.
SPEAKER_00Lord, hear our prayer.
SPEAKER_06We ask our blessed mother to intercede for us. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed are thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen. Heavenly Father, we have presented to you all our needs. We ask you to grant them through Christ our Lord.
SPEAKER_05Amen.
SPEAKER_06For through goodness, we receive the bread we offer you, fruit of the earth and the work of human hands, you'll become for us the bread of life. Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation, for through your goodness we receive the wine we offer you, fruit of the vine and work of human hands. You'll become our spiritual drink. O God, who give us the gift of true prayer and of peace, graciously grant that through this offering, we may do fitting homage to your divine majesty, and by partaking of the sacred mystery, may we be faithfully united in mind and heart through Christ our Lord.
SPEAKER_00Amen.
SPEAKER_06The Lord be with you.
SPEAKER_00And with your spirit.
SPEAKER_06Lift up your hearts. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right and just it is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks. Lord, Holy Father, Almighty and Eternal God, through Christ our Lord. In him you have been pleased to renew all things, giving us all a share in his fullness. For though he was in the form of God, he emptied himself, and by the blood of his cross brought peace to all creation. Therefore, he has been exalted above all things, and to all who obey him has become the source of eternal salvation. And so with angels and archangels, with thrones and dominions, and with all the wholesome powers of heaven, we sing the hymn of your glory as without end we acclaim.
SPEAKER_04Holy, holy, holy loved God of all heaven and earth are full of your glory. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
SPEAKER_06By sending down your spirit upon them like the dewful, so that they may become for us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. At the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion. He took bread and giving thanks, broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this, all of you, and eat of it. For this is my body, which will be given up for you. In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took the chalice, and once more giving thanks, he gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this, all of you, and drink from it. For this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me. Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection, we offer you, Lord, the bread of life and the chalice of salvation, giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you. Humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of Christ, we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit. Remember, Lord, your church, spread throughout the world, and bring her to the fullness of charity, together with Leo, our Pope, and Francis, our bishop, and all the clergy. Remember also our brothers and sisters, who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection, and all who have died in your mercy. Welcome them into the light of your face. Have mercy on us all, we pray, that with the blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with blessed Joseph, her spouse, with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages. We may marry To be co-heirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your Son Jesus Christ.
SPEAKER_03Through him and with him and in him, O God Almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours forever and ever.
SPEAKER_04Amen.
SPEAKER_06At the Savior's command, informed by divine teaching, we dare to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, we pray from every evil. Graciously grant peace in our days, that by the help of your mercy, we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Lord Jesus Christ, who said to you, Apostles, peace I leave you, my peace I give you. Look not in our sins, but on the faith of your church, and graciously grant her peace and unity, in accordance with your will, who live and reign forever and ever.
SPEAKER_05Amen.
SPEAKER_06The peace of the Lord be with you always. And with your spirit. Behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb.
SPEAKER_02My Jesus, I believe that you are present in this holy sacrament of the altar. I love you above all things, and I passionately desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come spiritually into my soul, so that I may unite myself wholly to you now and forever. Amen.
SPEAKER_06Let us pray. Grant that your faithful, O Lord, whom you nourish and endow with life, through the food of your word and heavenly sacrament, may you so benefit from your beloved Son's great gifts, that we may merit an eternal share in his life, who lives and reigns forever and ever. Amen. The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. Go in the peace of Christ.
SPEAKER_00Thanks be to God.
SPEAKER_04Our thanks to our donor for the gift of this mass.
