SPEAKER_03

From the St. Ignatius Chapel at the Manresa Jesuit Spiritual Renewal Center in Pickering, Ontario. The National Catholic Broadcasting Council presents the Daily TV Mass.

SPEAKER_09

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The grace and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of the Father, the friendship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And with your spirit. Welcome to the celebration of the Daily TV Mass. I am Father Michael Coots. The televising of this Mass is made possible by a contribution from an anonymous donor from California, United States. This Mass is being offered for the conversion of sinners and for the intentions of his family. Our thanks go out to the donor for the gift of this Mass, which is celebrated here in Canada, in the United States, and across the world. As we begin this Eucharist, we ask the Lord, the God of mercy and compassion, to look compassionately upon us and to forgive us our sins. You were sent to heal the contrite, Lord, have mercy. You came to call sinners, Christ have mercy. You are seated at the right hand of the Father to intercede for us. Lord, have mercy. May Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sin, and bring us to everlasting life.

SPEAKER_06

Amen.

SPEAKER_09

Let us pray. Look upon us, O God, creator and ruler of all things, and that we may feel the working of your mercy, grant that we may serve you with all our heart. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, forever and ever.

SPEAKER_04

Amen.

SPEAKER_00

A reading from the first letter of Peter. The end of all things is near. Therefore, be serious and discipline yourselves for the sake of your prayers. Above all, maintain constant love for one another, for love covers a multitude of sins. Be hospitable to one another without complaining. Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received. Whoever speaks must do as so as one speaking the very words of God. Whoever serves must do so with the strength that God supplies, so that God may be glorified in all things through Jesus Christ. To him belong the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen. Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that is taking place among you to test you as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice in so far as you are sharing Christ's sufferings, so that you may also be glad and shout for joy when his glory is revealed. The word of the Lord.

SPEAKER_02

Say among the nations, the Lord is king, the world is firmly established, it shall never be moved. He will judge the peoples with equity. The Lord comes to judge the earth. Let the heavens be glad and let the earth rejoice. Let the sea roar and all that feels it. Let the field exult and everything in it. Then shall all the trees of the forest sing for joy. The Lord comes to judge the earth. Rejoice before the Lord, for he is coming, for he is coming to judge the earth. He will judge the world with righteousness and the peoples with his truth. The Lord comes to judge the earth. I have chosen you from the world, says the Lord, to go and bear fruit that will last.

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark. After his triumphant entry into Jerusalem, Jesus went into the temple, and when he had looked around at everything, as it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the twelve. One day when Jesus and his disciples came from Bethany, he was hungry. Seeing in the distance a fig tree and leaf, he went to see whether it would find anything on it. When he came to it, he found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season of figs. He said to it, May no one ever eat fruit from you again. And his disciples heard it. Then they came to Jerusalem and he entered the temple and began to drive out those who were selling and those who were buying in the temple. And he overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who tow who sold doves, and he would not allow anyone to carry anything through the temple. He was teaching and saying, Is it not written, My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations, but you have made it a den of robbers. And when the chief priests and scribes heard it, they kept for looking for a way to kill him, for they were afraid of him, because the whole crowd was spellbound by his teaching. And when evening came, Jesus and his disciples went out of the city. In the morning, as they passed by, they saw the fig tree withered away to its roots. Then Peter remembered and said to him, Rabbi, look, the fig tree that you cursed has withered. Jesus answered them, Have faith in God, truly I tell you, if you say to this mountain, Be taken up and thrown into the sea, and if you do not doubt in your heart, but believe that what you say will come to pass, it will be done for you. So I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. Whenever you stand praying, forgive. If you have anything against anyone, so that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses. The Gospel of the Lord. There are certain uh crime stories on TV, and at the beginning of each one of them, you will hear these words because of mature content and graphic violence, viewer discretion is advised. So scenes like NCIS, FBI, Law and Order, you'll find these before. We could very well say the same thing of our gospel today. Because of mature contents and scenes of violence, of graphic violence, viewer discretion is advised. We have Mark using a technique where he starts a story, part one, then tells a narrative, and then ends with part two. The first story, the middle story is the cleansing of the temple. In the gospel according to John, John puts this cleansing of the temple right at the beginning. Soon after the miracle of the at Cana in Galilee, Jesus comes to Jerusalem and cleanses the temple. In the Synoptic Gospels, we have just finished Palm Sunday, and it's the next day, Monday or Tuesday, when Jesus comes down and cleanses the temple. It is the last straw, and the scribes and the Pharisees decide to kill Jesus. There are many layers to this story of cleansing of the temple. Jesus comes into the temple. He used to come here quite often. He would be in an alcove and teach. He would go up and see the sacrifices that were made. And that is the beginning or the background to our story. There were those who sold. These were farmers. They sold lambs and kids and goats and sheep and bulls. They had to be animals without blemish to give the best sacrifice to the Lord. They could not have cloven feet with tails broken or a mark on the body or a blind in one eye because that had a blemish. You could not use that. And very often the prophets would say, you sell all these blemished sacrifices because you want to get rid of them and keep the best for yourselves. That is the first layer of the story. The second layer of the story are those who changed money. You could buy, you wanted to buy these animals in order to sacrifice in the temple, sure, but you could not use the Roman drachma or the Roman denarius. You had to change it into shekels. And if you go to Jerusalem today, for a different reason, you will still find those money changers. Whether you go to the Damascus Gate or the New Gate, as soon as you enter, you will find little stalls in which you could change your Euros into shekels, your Euros, your Canadian dollars, American dollars, and pounds into shekels to buy your coffee or your beer or your souvenir that you take back home. And so these things were important. They were allowed by the temple priest and by the Sanadrin, because they got a cut both from the ones who sold the sheep and the goats and the bulls and those who did the money changing. And as you know, there was fluctuation in the change of money. It's not like we had one fixed rate. They would change from day to day. And so when Jesus drove these people out of the temple, the scribes and the Pharisees were not so much concerned about the fact that Jesus was doing the right thing, but because their pockets were touched. And you and I have experienced the same thing. In these present days, with the wars in Venezuela and in Iran and the Gulf of Hormuz being closed, all our prices have gone up, whether it's gas or groceries or even flying, an extra $50 has been added for fuel charges. And so we know exactly how much they would we suffer today. But the scribes and the Pharisees would say, you can insult me, you can beat me, but if you touch my pocket, hell has no fury like I have. And so here we have Jesus cleansing the temple. Jesus would cleanse the temple because he realized that this was a place that we should keep sacred and holy. And even till today, we can go into the churches and sometimes we find people talking so loudly because they don't have a sense of the sacred. Having said that, we come back to the fig tree. Jesus came in the morning and he came and he saw and he was feeling hungry and he looked for a fig. Now Jesus knew it wasn't the season for figs, and yet he looked for it and he cursed it. Jesus was using a metaphor over here. He knew that this was not the season for figs, but it was a season in which he would get nothing. It would be like for us finding a rosy apple growing on a tree in the middle of January. You would never find that. And so he comes to the end and he says, it is important that we keep the rules and regulations. In Matthew chapter 5, Jesus said, I didn't come to abolish the law, but I came to fulfill it. So the law was good, but it was only a foundation. You don't live on a foundation, you live on a house built on a foundation. And it is from this house that you build that you live in a foundation that you go out to proclaim the good news, as Peter says in our first reading today. He says, the end is near. Live in such a way. And how do we live? Maya Angelou would say, you know, people will never remember all the wonderful things you say, but they will always remember how you made them feel. And so Peter gives us examples how to make people feel. He says, to love intensely. Don't just quote when people have got problems and issues, verses from the gospel and preach them big homilies, but make them realize that they are cared for in the same way God cares for them, to love intensely. The next way he says is to be hospitable. And you see that happening in the Caribbean. Over here, if I ask somebody how do I get from one place to another, they just tell me, put the GPS and go from here to there. In the Caribbean, they'll actually walk with you to the last place that you want to go to. It is these two ways and finally the way of service. Jesus washed the feet of the disciples, and we are called to be of service to others. In this way, we proclaim the good news. God bless you all. Join me now as we pray together. For the Pope's intention in this month of May that everyone might have food, we pray that everyone, from large producers to small consumers, be committed to avoid wasting food and to ensure that everyone has access to quality food. We pray to the Lord. For our anonymous donor from California, USA today, that the Lord may bless him and grant him peace of mind and health and body, we pray to the Lord. For all those in our daily TV Mass Prayer Intention book, we pray to the Lord. During this month of May, our community prays to follow the example of Mary by offering joy, compassion, and mercy, especially to mothers and grandmothers, and to all who lovingly serve those in need. We make this prayer through Christ our Lord.

SPEAKER_07

Amen.

SPEAKER_09

Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation, for through your goodness we have this bread we offer you. Fruit of the earth and work of human hands, it will become for us the bread of life.

SPEAKER_03

Blessed be God forever.

SPEAKER_08

Through the mystery of this wine and water, may we come to share the divinity of Christ among the Himself to share in our humanity.

SPEAKER_09

Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation. For through your goodness we have this wine we offer you. Fruit of the wine and work of human hands, it will become for us our spiritual drink. Blessed be God forever.

SPEAKER_08

Lord God, be pleased to accept these gifts which we offer to you with humble and with contrite heart. Wash away my iniquities and to cleanse me from my sin.

SPEAKER_09

Thank you. Pray, my sisters, my brothers, that this our sacrifice be acceptable to God the Almighty Father.

SPEAKER_07

Praise and glory of his name, for our goodness of all his holy church.

SPEAKER_09

Look with favor on our supplications, O Lord, and in your kindness accept these, your servants' offerings, that what each has offered in the honor of your name may serve the salvation of all through Christ our Lord.

unknown

Amen.

SPEAKER_09

The Lord be with you and with your spirit. Lift up your hearts. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is truly right and just our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere, to give you thanks, Lord, Holy Father, Almighty and Eternal God, for although you have no need of our praise, yet our thanksgiving is itself your gift, since our praises add nothing to your greatness, but profit us for salvation through Christ our Lord. And so in the company of the choirs of angels, we praise you, as with joy we acclaim.

SPEAKER_02

Holy, holy, holy Lord God of hosts, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

SPEAKER_09

You are indeed holy, O Lord, the fount of all holiness. Make holy, therefore, these gifts by sending down your spirit upon them like the dew fall, so that they may become for us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. At the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion, he took bread, giving thanks, broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this, all of you, and eat of it, for this is my body which will be given up for you. In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took the chalice, and once more giving thanks, he gave the chalice to his disciples, saying, Take this, all of you, and drink from it, for this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me! The mystery of faith.

SPEAKER_02

We proclaim your death, O Lord, and profess your resurrection until you come again.

SPEAKER_09

Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection, we offer you, Lord, the bread of life and the chalice of salvation. Salvation, giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you. Humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of Christ, we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit. Remember, Lord, your church spread throughout the world. Bring her to the fullness of charity, together with Leo, our Pope, Francis, our bishop, all the clergy, and this entire people of God. Remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection, and all who have died in your mercy. Welcome them into the light of your face. Have mercy on us all, that with the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with Blessed Joseph, her spouse, with the Blessed Apostles, with Saint Jean de Brabaf, Isaac Jogues, and our Canadian martyrs, and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages, we may merit to be co-heirs to eternal life and praise and glorify you through your Son, Jesus Christ. Through him with him and in him, O God Almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours forever and ever.

SPEAKER_01

Amen.

SPEAKER_09

At the Savior's command, informed by divine teaching, we now dare to say, Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, from every evil, graciously grant peace in our day, that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin, safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Saviour, Jesus Christ. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Lord Jesus Christ, you said to your apostles, peace I leave you, my peace I give you. Look not on our sins, but on the faith of your church, and graciously grant a peace and unity in accordance with your will, who live and reign forever and ever. Peace of the Lord be with you always. Let us share with one another a sign of this peace and friendship.

SPEAKER_02

Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world. Have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world. Have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world.

SPEAKER_09

Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those who are called to the supper of the Lamb. Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed. May the body and blood of Christ bring us and all our dear ones unto life everlasting.

SPEAKER_03

My Jesus, I believe that you are present in this holy sacrament of the altar. I love you above all things, and I passionately desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come spiritually into my soul, so that I may unite myself wholly to you now and forever. Amen.

SPEAKER_09

The Lord be with you with you in your service. May Almighty God bless you, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen. Go in the peace of Christ to love and serve the Lord and one another.

SPEAKER_01

Our thanks to our donor for the gift of this mass.

SPEAKER_05

We never receive Jesus.
