From the St. Ignatius Chapel at the Manresa Jesuit Spiritual Renewal Center in Pickering, Ontario. The National Catholic Broadcasting Council presents the Daily TV Mass.

SPEAKER_02

Welcome to the celebration of the Daily TV Mass. I am Father Francis Salesiar, and today our homelist is Deacon Mike Waltz. The televising of this mass is made possible by the contributions from three donors. The first is Judith Zwanko from Kirkland Lake, Ontario. The Cedars of Lebanon will continue to grow. And may we be instruments of God's peace. And in Thanksgiving for the Daily TV Mass priests and staff. The second is Fred George from Fort Erie, Ontario, in memory of lawyer brother Michael, who died on July 11th, 2024, at the age of 89. And for all the regular participants of the Daily TV Mass. The third is Ralph Hoffard and family from St. Vincent de Paul Parish in Weybourne, Saskatchewan, in memory of his wife, Ewett, who passed away on June 2, 2019, and sons Laverin on September 4, 1976, and Keith on August 23rd, 1980. Our sincere thanks to our donors for the gift of this mass. In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. The Lord be with you. As we come to participate in the Eucharist, we are reminded of the scriptures of today. Particularly in the gospel, how the Herodians and the Pharisees come to challenge, to trap Jesus. When we journey in faith, they are always put to test. But we are called to endure our test. So let us ask God's Father and mercy for the moments where we have fallen. You are sent to heal the contrite of heart. Lord have mercy. You came to call the sinners. Christ have mercy. You are seated at the right hand of the Father to intercede for us. Lord have mercy. May Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to life everlasting. Let us pray. O God, who manifest your almighty power above all by pardoning and showing mercy. Bestow we pray your grace abundantly upon us and make those hastening to attain your promises heirs to the treasures of heaven. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, forever and ever. Amen.

A reading from the second letter of Peter. Beloved, what sort of persons should you be waiting for and earnestly desiring the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set ablaze and dissolved, and the elements will melt with fire. But in accordance with his promise, we wait for the for new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness is at home. Therefore, beloved, while you are waiting for these things, strive to be found by him at peace, without spot or blemish, and regard the patience of our Lord as salvation. You, therefore, beloved, since you are forewarned, beware be beware that you are not carried away with the error of the lawless and lose your own stability. But grow in the grace of and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen. The word of the Lord.

SPEAKER_06

Lord, you have been our dwelling place in our generation before the mountains were brought forth, wherever you had fallen the earth had loves from everlasting to everlasting in every life you have been you turn as part of say turn back your task for a thousand years in your sight, like yesterday when it is past, unlike a watch in it. You have been honored. The days of our life are suffered, or perhaps eight if we are straw, even though the spirits of the toilet rubble. In every lord, you have been held. May the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ enlighten the eyes of alright that we might see how great is the hope to which we are called.

SPEAKER_01

Some Pharisees and some Herodians were sent to Jesus to trap him in what he said. And they came and they said to him, Teacher, we know that you are sincere and show deference to no one, for you do not regard people with partiality, but teach the way of God in accordance with truth. Is it lawful to pay taxes to the emperor or not? Should we pay them or should we not? But knowing their hypocrisy, Jesus said to them, Why are you putting me to the test? Bring me a denarius, and let me see it. And they brought one. Then he said to them, Whose head is this and whose title? They answered, The Emperors. And Jesus said to them, Give to the Emperor the things that are the Emperors, and give to God the things that are God's. And they were utterly amazed at him. The gospel of the Lord. Just before I begin, I want to uh send out a little message of thank you to Father Hank, Father Michael, and the entire team here at the Manresa Spirituality Center for welcoming us back. You may have noticed we've been here, I think, since Divine Mercy Sunday. And I just want to give you a little update that the the Loretta Abbey Chapel, actually the school, not the chapel, is undergoing now the major phase of renovation. And they say that the construction is going to take 18 to 36 months. So if you've ever done a home renovation, your contractor says 18 to 36 months, he really doesn't mean 18 months. All right. So it's probably closer to the 36 months. So for the next couple of years anyway, we are so blessed to be here at Man Risa, a place that we are going to call home. And again, we thank the Jesuits for their support of the Daily TV Mass. And in our gospel today, it's a really a very, very interesting uh story. And the setting is that Jesus is in Jerusalem and he's coming to the end of his ministry. So his fame has grown, and actually he has attracted the attention, as we know all the way through the story of the religious leaders, the Pharisees. But in this story is an interesting group we don't see as often called the Herodians. Now, the Pharisees are the ones who are the religious authorities. These are the people that find it more distressful that Jesus did this miracle of curing the blind man on the Sabbath, so they accuse him from doing it on the Sabbath rather than be amazed by the miracle. But the Herodians, they're interesting as well. They are the political authority. These are the people who have aligned themselves behind King Herod in this case, right, and with the Romans. So they gain their power by actually supporting the Romans in Jerusalem. And they're not usually very much aligned or friendly, the Pharisees and the Herodians, and they oppose each other quite a bit, as the Pharisees want to be free of the Romans, and the power that the Herodians come comes directly from them. But they have come together and they unite against Jesus because Jesus is seen as a threat. When truth challenges both religion and power, it can really unite the opposition. So they set a trap for him. And why is this so dangerous? Well, they've really set up a situation if you look at the story that if if you had a coin, for example, this is a modern day thing, if anybody asks you to flip a coin and they you flip that coin, and the person might say, uh, heads I win, tails you lose. In other words, a no-win situation. And that's really what they think they have Jesus in here. So they've carefully constructed it. If Jesus says yes, you should pay taxes to Caesar, he will lose credibility with the people who hate the Romans. If he says no, then the Herodians would have a case to go and say that he is an open rebellion against Rome. So it's really not a question, it's a test. And one of the reasons they want to trap Jesus is because he is challenging constantly the status quo. He doesn't play by their rules, and he takes what they would see as a simple question and goes much deeper. I love this quote from Pope Francis. He says, whenever we attempt to return to the source, new paths arise and discomfort is felt. You see, in this case, Jesus is the new source. He is the truth, and it creates discomfort all around him as he starts to bring these truths forward. So he unsettles the political systems, the religious assumptions, and he is ultimately rejected. Remember, at one point they say it is better for one man to die. And so that is how we get there. And his gospel message does not simply fit into the world, it completely challenges the world. And it's a beautiful deeper teaching in this story we've heard so many times. So Jesus asks in response to the question, you know, whose image do you see on the coin? And they answer the emperor, Caesar. So he says, give to Caesar, give to the emperor what belongs to the emperor. But here's the deeper teaching. He says, give to God what belongs to God. He shifts the focus completely. Yes, the coin bears the image of Caesar, but he says, we, all of us, bear the image of God. And therefore, he calls for us to do our work, to perform our duties, to be part of the world. He's constantly sending the disciples out into the world, but he says, do not be of the world. Your lives, your hearts, your identity, they all belong to God. Jesus never calls on us to withdraw, he calls on us to go out and live faithfully in the world. Pope Benedict said, the world promises you comfort, but you were not made for comfort. You were made for greatness. It's a powerful quote. You see, the world does do that. We see that it offers us comfort, ease, and especially if we conform to it. But God offers us truth and purpose and holiness. And I see this particularly for young people, but for all of us, really. The temptation is to blend in, to divide our lives between God and the world, but only give God a very small portion of that. This teaching says, no, that's not what you're called to do. You're called to take that more difficult path, and often that can begin with a decision. To step, for example, into a ministry. And I know this was part of my journey when I was asked to enter into a ministry serving those who had spent time in prison. That's not something I ever thought I would do. To walk with men and women trying to rebuild their lives. Some of these have created committed very serious offenses, some against children. And the world would say they are not worthy. They're not worthy of forgiveness, kindness, or compassion. And if you decide to go and do something like this, you could be judged, misunderstood, and even rejected by those closest to you. I remember one of the first people I met was a pastor of a very small church who took in one such person, who the community considered both dangerous and beyond redemption. And they faced threats, even of violence. But they took him in and they walked with him. I think of a couple that I know from my parish who started slowly but then decided to walk with this man. He was not an easy person to be with, and he they accompanied him for years through illness and eventually right up to the time he died. And this woman, who actually still see her sitting there with this young man who was very, very challenged, had very deep wounds and damages from his own childhood, and she just sat there, listened to him for many, many years. So it's this deeper truth that Jesus is trying to tell us today. We have to be willing to challenge the status quo. We have to refuse to accept the lie that some people may be beyond redemption. And we have to let the image of Jesus shine through us. And it's the great paradox of giving away God's love. Because whenever you get into a point where you give away God's love, you get so much more in return. So back to the coin. You know, in Canada a while ago, we changed from the dollar bill to a coin. And the coin is called a loony because they put a loon on the back of the coin. And if you really look at it, if Jesus was here today, right, what he might say is, give to the loony what is the loonies, but give to God what is God. And then when we do that, when we give our whole lives to God, we can go forth in peace, glorifying the Lord by giving our lives away and giving to the world what is required, but belonging completely to God. God bless. So join me now, trusting that we belong to God, in whose image we were made, we bring our prayers before Him with confidence and hope. And for all those listed in the Daily TV Mass Prayer Intentions book, that their needs, spoken and unspoken, may be heard by the Lord, who knows every heart and answers every mercy, we pray to the Lord. Lord, hear our prayer. During this month of the sacred heart of Jesus, let us pray for healing in families. In Christ's mercy, may renew our hearts and restore our relationships. We pray to the Lord.

SPEAKER_04

Lord, hear our prayer.

SPEAKER_01

Heavenly Father, you created us in your image and called us to live fully for you in the midst of this world. Grant us the courage to give our lives to you without reserve, to see the image in every person we meet and to reflect your mercy in all that we do through Christ our Lord. Amen.

SPEAKER_02

Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for through your goodness we shall receive the bread we offer you, fruit of the earth, and work of human hands. It will become for us the bread of life. Blessed on you, Lord God of all creation for your goodness, we have received the wine we are for you, fruit of the wine work of human hands. It will become a spiritual drink. Grant us, O merciful God, that this our offering may find acceptance with you, and that through it the wellspring of all blessing may be laid open before us through Christ our Lord. The Lord be with you and in your spirit. Lift up your hearts. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right and just it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere, to give you thanks. Lord, Holy Father, Almighty and Eternal God. For just as through your beloved Son, you created the human race, so also through Him with great goodness you formed it new. And so it is right that all your creatures serve you, all the redeemed praise you, and all your saints with one heart bless you. Therefore, we take stolen you with all the angels, as a joyful celebration we acclaim.

SPEAKER_06

Holy, holy, holy heart, God of all of your glory. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

SPEAKER_02

You are indeed holy, O Lord, the fount of all holiness. Make holy therefore these gifts we pray, by sending down your spirit upon them like the dew fall, so that they may become for us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. At the time he was betrayed and underwhelming into his passion, he took bread, giving thanks, broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this, all of you, and eat of it. For this is my body, which will be given up for you. In a similar way, when supper was underdicated to chalice once more, giving thanks, he gave his disciples saying, Take this. All of you and drink from it. For this is a chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me. The mystery of faith.

SPEAKER_06

We proclaim your death and profess your resurrection until you come.

SPEAKER_02

Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection, we offer you, Lord, the bread of life on the chalice of salvation, giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you. Humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of Christ, we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit. Remember, Lord, your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity, together with Leo our Pope, Francis our Bishop, and all the clergy. Remember also, brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection, and all who have died in your mercy. Welcome them into the light of your face. Have mercy on us all. We pray that with the blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with the Blessed Joseph, Hespouse, with the Blessed Apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages, we may merit to be co heirs to eternal life, and may praise and glorify you through your Son, Jesus Christ. Through him and with him and in him. O God, Almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours forever and ever. Amen. At the Savior's command and formed by divine teaching, we dare to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, we pray from every evil. Graciously grant peace in our days, that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Look not on our sins, but on the faith of your church, and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will, who live and reign forever and ever. Amen. The peace of the Lord be with you always.

SPEAKER_01

Let us offer each other a sign of peace.

SPEAKER_02

Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb. Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.

SPEAKER_03

Please join me now in this act of spiritual communion. My Jesus, I believe that you are present in this holy sacrament of the altar. I love you above all things, and I passionately desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come spiritually into my soul, so that I may unite myself wholly to you now and forever. Amen.

SPEAKER_02

Let us pray. May this heavenly mystery, O Lord, restore us in mind and body, that we may be co-heirs in glory with Christ, to whose suffering we are united whenever we proclaim his death, who lives and reigns forever and ever.

SPEAKER_04

Amen.

SPEAKER_02

The Lord be with you and with your spirit. May Almighty God bless you, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

unknown

Amen.

SPEAKER_01

Go in peace, glorifying the Lord by your life. Thanks be to God.

SPEAKER_03
