Fr. John Bertao
From the St. Ignatius Chapel at the Manresa Jesuit Spiritual Renewal Center in Pickering, Ontario. The National Catholic Broadcasting Council presents the Daily TV Mass.
SPEAKER_06Hello. Welcome to the celebration of the Daily TV Mass. I'm Father John Berteo. The televising of this Mass is made possible by the contribution from the Kelly family and Carlisle, Pennsylvania. This Mass is offered in loving memory of Laura Kelly, a beautifully godly woman called to our Lord at a very early age due to the pancreatic cancer. May Laura's bring a friend to Christ. Evangelization continue the light of path to Jesus for those she touched, especially her children. May God continue to bless Laura's work with the National Pancreas Foundation located in Baltimore, Maryland, in hopes of a cure one day. And may her soul and the souls of the faithful departed rest in peace. Amen. And we begin in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
SPEAKER_04Amen.
SPEAKER_06The Lord be with you.
SPEAKER_04And with your spirit.
SPEAKER_06In my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and what I have failed to do. Through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault. Therefore I ask, Blessed Mary of the Virgin, all the angels and saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God. May Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. Amen. Lord have mercy. Lord have mercy. Christ have mercy. Lord have mercy. Let us pray. Almighty reliving God, who in the abundance of your kindness surpass the merits and the desires of those who entreat you, pour out your mercy upon us to pardon what conscience dreads, and to give what prayer does not dare ask. To our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever.
unknownAmen.
SPEAKER_00A reading from the second letter of Paul to Timothy. My dear brother Timothy, remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, a descendant of David. That is my gospel, for which I suffer hardship, even to the point of being chained like a criminal. But the word of God is not chained. Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, so that they may also obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. The saying is sure, if we have died with him, we will also live with him. If we endure, we will also reign with him. If we deny him, he will also deny us. If we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot deny himself. Remind them of this and warn them before God that they are to avoid wrangling over words which does no good but only ruins those who are listening. Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved by Him, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly explaining the word of truth. The word of the Lord.
SPEAKER_04Thanks be to God.
SPEAKER_05Teach me your ways, O Lord. Make me to know your ways, O Lord. Teach me your path. Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation. For you I wait all day long. Teach me your ways, O Lord. Good and upright is the Lord. Therefore, he instructs sinners in the way. He leads the humble in what is right and teaches the humble his way. Teach me your ways, O Lord. All the paths of the Lord are steadfast love and faithfulness for those to keep his covenant and his decrees. The friendship of the Lord is for those to fear, and he makes his covenant known to them. Teach me your ways, O Lord Alleluia, Alluya, Alleluia, Aleluya, Our Saviour Jesus Christ has done away with death and brought us life through the gospel.
SPEAKER_06The Lord be with you. And in your spirit. Everything from the Holy Gospel according to Mark.
SPEAKER_02Glory to you, Lord.
SPEAKER_06One of the scribes came near Jesus and asked him, Which commandment is the first of all? Jesus answered, The first is, Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is this, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these. Then the scribe said to him, You are right, teacher. You have truly said that he is one, and besides him there is no other. And to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the strength, and to love one's neighbor as oneself. This is much more important than all those burnt offerings and sacrifices. When Jesus saw that he had answered wisely, he said to him, You are not far from the kingdom of God. After that, no one dared to ask him any question. The gospel of the Lord. Short story. Many years ago, I was lucky enough to join our graduating students in grade eight of our local primary school on a trip to Ottawa. For many of the students, it was their first time to actually sleep outside of their own bed in their own home and to have to share a bed and the room, of course, with a student from the same class that they were in. The escorts was myself, the principal, and a few teachers. Needless to say, many were overwhelmed with everything. When we got to the main library, they were all in awe of the number of books, you know, the main library in Ottawa. All of the books from wall to wall, from floor to ceiling, and they looked so beautiful, like in a picture, uh, perfectly arranged in some kind of order that only they knew how. They all looked in perfect line with each other. One of the students asked me, Do you actually think that one person ever read at least maybe 5% of those books that look so nice from here, from down here? Now, I don't believe that any individual is expected to know all the books. It's a point of reference for many laws that we have in our country. So we might ask, what is the purpose of God's law and commandments? The Pharisees, they prided themselves in the knowledge of the law and the ritual requirements. They made it a lifetime practice to study all of the 613, 613 teachings of the Old Testament, along with all of the numerous commentaries that had been written on them. They tested Jesus to see if he would correctly understand the law as they did. And of course, Jesus startled them with his profound simplicity and mastery of the law of God and the purpose of God's law. So we might ask, what does God require of us? One lawyer who I have uh gotten to know and and uh and like very much. We get along very well together. Uh one day he said to me, Father, I don't sin. I thought, hmm, interesting. I don't sin. However, I pay taxes and I give to the poor and I do all kinds of wonderful things. I don't go to church because, you know, I don't really get anything out of it, especially when I know of people who go to church and when they come out of it, they start yak, yak, yak, and talking and gossiping about others. I honestly don't think uh that I am better than them, he said. But, you know, really, like I just don't get it where they're coming from. And so he continued, just because I don't practice any faith, does that make me a bad person? Now, for the record, please. I I have nothing against lawyers. I think we all of us need them to keep us in sort of line and to come up with laws and to give us advice as well. Let's ask the questions. What does God require of us in this world? Simply is that we love as God loves, as he loves. God is love, and everything he does flows from his love for us. God loved us first, and our love for him is a response to his exceptional grace and kindness toward us. The love of God comes first, and the love of neighbor is firmly grounded in the love of God, the love that God has for the neighbor and for us as well, the same level. You see, the more we know God's love and truth, the more we love what he loves and reject what is hateful to his will. Those of us who have some level of faith and hope, God will strengthen their love for him. Faith and hope are essential for a good relationship with God, for being united to him. The more we know God, the more we love him, and the more we love him, the greater we live and hope in his promises. See, the Lord, through the gift of the Holy Spirit, gives us a new freedom to love as he loves. From deep, deep down in here. Very, very honest, very sincere love. So, do you allow anything to keep you from the love of God and the joy of serving others with a generous heart? St. Paul says, and I quote, hope does not disappoint us because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit which has been given to us. End quote. After some time of getting to know my uh my new colleague, my new friend, the lawyer, and sharing with him any great, my great love for Jesus and his church, one day he asked me if I could invite him to come to Mass. Go figure. He was overwhelmed to know that someone actually cared about his soul, about his salvation, and that was me. He was even happier when I explained the Ten Commandments and how easy they are to remember, more than the 613 laws and all the books in the library, especially the first one. And I repeated as we had read in the gospel I am the Lord your God, you shall shall not have strange gods before me. So, again, back to my colleague. Until that time, his small g God was knowledge. He just wanted to know and more and more and more and be famous. Today, he is very happy and successful in his law practice, both professional and above all, about his faith in love, in God, and how much God loves him unconditionally. So, to conclude, dear friends in Christ, we cannot God love unless we love each other, and the love that we must know each other to know, to love, and to give from the heart. We know him in the breaking of bread, as we'll do soon do here, and in the breaking of bread, and we are not alone anymore, because together we come as we come here in a virtual way, and those of us here in a very physical way. Heaven, dear friends, is a banquet, and life is a banquet too, even with a crust where there is companionship with perfect happiness and love. Be happy, please, be happy. Life is too short. Why? Because you are loved. Share it with someone and see how it flourishes, see how it grows. We pray for all of those then in search of love. May they find in each one of us that we pray together for them, that they all love God in the same way as God loves them and we love them as well. And so, together then, we pray for the intentions of this month of June. For all of those in that daily mass prayer intentions book, we pray to the Lord. During this month of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, let us pray for healing in families, that Christ's mercy may renew our hearts and restore our relationships. We pray to the Lord. And that we have a sincere, contrite heart to love Jesus and His blessed Mother every day that we should pray. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of Father.
SPEAKER_03Amen.
SPEAKER_06Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for if you just receive the bread we offer you, fruit of the earth and work of human hands, you will become for us the bread of life. Through the mystery of this water and wine, may we come to share in the divinity of Christ, who humbles himself to share in our humanity. Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation. For through your goodness and receive the wine we offer you, free to the vine and work of human hands, it will become our spiritual drink.
SPEAKER_02Blessed be God forever.
SPEAKER_06With humble spirit.
unknownThank you.
SPEAKER_06Pray, brothers and sisters, that my sacrifice and yours be acceptable to God, the Almighty Father.
SPEAKER_02May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory.
SPEAKER_06Accept, O Lord, we pray the sacrifices instituted by your commands, and through the sacred mysteries which we celebrate with mutual service, graciously complete the sacrificing work by which you are pleased to redeem us through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. Lift up your hearts. Lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right and just right and just our attitude in our salvation, always in every word to give you thanks, Lord, Holy Father, Almighty eternal God. For just as through your beloved Son, you created the human race, so also through him with great goodness you formed it anew. And so it is right that all your creatures serve you, all the redeemed praise you, and all your saints with one heart bless you. Therefore we too exalt you with all the angels, as in choice joyful celebration we acclaim.
SPEAKER_05Holy, holy, holy Lord God of hosts, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hostanna in the yest, blessed any sea who comes in the name of the Lord. Hostanna in the yest.
SPEAKER_06Make holy therefore these gifts, we pray, by sending down your spirit upon them like the dew fall, so that they may become for us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. At the time he was betrayed, and into willingly into his passion, he took bread, and giving thanks broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this, all of you, and eat of it. For this is my body, which will be given up for you. In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took the chalice, and once more giving thanks, he gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this, all of you, and drink from it. For this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many, for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me. The mystery of faith.
SPEAKER_05We proclaim your death, O Lord, and profess your resurrection until you come again.
SPEAKER_06Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection, we offer you, Lord, the bread of life and the child salvation, giving thanks that you've helped us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you. How we pray that by taking of the body and blood of Christ, we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit. Remember, Lord, your church spread throughout the world and bring you to the fullness of charity, together with Leo, our Pope, Francis, our bishop, and all the clergy. Remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection, and all who have died in your mercy, welcome them into the light of your face. Have mercy on us all, we pray, that with the blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, and the Blessed Joseph, our spouse, with the Blessed Apostles, and all the saints you please you through all the ages, we may merit to be co-heres with eternal life, and may praise and glorify you through your Son Jesus Christ. Through him and with him and in him. O God, Almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours for ever and ever. At the Savior's command, and formed by divine teaching, we pray from the heart and with love. Our Father, who art in heaven, our be done. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us a daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, we pray from every evil. Graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all the stress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. The kingdom, power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your apostles, peace I leave you, my peace I give you. Look not on our sins, but on the faith of your church. And grace, on your peace and unity, and accordance with your will, who live and reign forever and ever.
SPEAKER_04Amen.
SPEAKER_06The peace of the peace of Christ be with you today and always. Let's pause for a moment and think of someone you want to be at peace with and through the Holy Spirit. Send them on that peace to them and a little bit of love because we all need it.
SPEAKER_05Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world. Have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world.
SPEAKER_06Behold the Lamb of God. Behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb. But only say the word, and my soul shall be heard.
SPEAKER_01Please join me now in this act of spiritual communion. My Jesus, I believe that you are present in this holy sacrament of the altar. I love you above all things, and I passionately desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come spiritually into my soul, so that I may unite myself wholly to you now and forever. Amen.
SPEAKER_06Grant us, Almighty God, that we may be refreshed and nourished by the sacrament which we have received, so as to be transformed into what we consume through Christ our Lord. The Lord be with you.
SPEAKER_04And with your Holy Spirit.
