From the St. Ignatius Chapel at the Manresa Jesuit Spiritual Renewal Center in Pickering, Ontario. The National Catholic Broadcasting Council presents the Daily TV Mass.
SPEAKER_02Welcome to the celebration of the Daily TV Mass. I'm Father Hank van Mijel. The televising of this Mass is made possible by the contribution from three donors. The first is an anonymous donor from Toronto, Ontario, in thanksgiving for all blessings received and for living and deceased family, relatives and friends for the souls in purgatory and for world peace. The second are Mike and Elizabeth Dillon from St. John's, Newfoundland, for the living and deceased members of the Dillon, Veeds, Thorne and Kobotar families, and for the abandoned souls in purgatory. The third are Paul and Fran Corsaro from Greenwood, Indiana. Blessings for the 63rd wedding anniversary today, and thanksgiving for their large family and for the recovery of their daughter from her accident on June 11, 1978, for their deceased relatives, for the return of Catholics who have fallen away from their faith, for world peace and in support of the daily TV Mass. Our thanks to our donors for the gift of this Mass. In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, the peace of the Lord be with you.
SPEAKER_04And with your spirit.
SPEAKER_02And as we have placed ourselves before the Lord on this Monday, again recalling our own weakness, our own need for God's guidance. You were sent to heal the contrite of heart. Lord have mercy. You came to call sinners. Christ have mercy. You are seated at the right hand of the Father to intercede for us. Lord have mercy. May Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. And let us pray. Almighty and merciful God, graciously keep from us all adversity, so that unhindered in mind and body alike we may pursue in freedom of heart the things that are yours. True, O Lord, Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen.
SPEAKER_01A reading from the book, first book of Kings. Naboth the Jisraelite had a vineyard in Jisrael beside a palace of King Ahab of Samaria. And Ahab said to Naboth, Give me your vineyard, so that I may have it for a vegetable garden, because it is near my house. I will give you a better vineyard for it, or if it seems good to you, I will give you its value in money. But Naboth said to Ahab, The Lord forbid that I should give you my ancestral inheritance. Ahab went home resentful and sullen because of what Naboth the Jisreelite had said to him, for he had said, I will not give you my ancestor inheritance. He lay down on his bed, turned away his face, and would not eat. His wife Jezebel came to him and said, Why are you so depressed that you will not eat? He said to her, Because I spoke to Naboth, the Gisraelite, and said to him, Give me your vineyard for money, or else, if you prefer, I will give you another vineyard for it. But he answered, I will not give you my vineyard. His wife Jezebel said to him, Do you now govern Israel? Get up, eat some food, and be cheerful. I will give you the vineyard of Naboth, the Israelite. So she wrote letters in Ahab's name and sealed them with his seal. She sent the letters to the elders and the nobles who lived with Naboth in the city. She wrote in the letters Proclaim a fast and seat Naboth at the head of the assembly. See two scoundrels opposite him and have them bring a charge against him, saying, You have cursed God and the king. Then take him out and stone him to death. The men of his city, the elders and the nobles who lived in his city did as Jezebel had sent word to them, just as it was written in the letters that she had sent them, they proclaimed a fast and seated Naboth at the head of the assembly. And the scoundrels brought a charge against Naboth in the presence of the people saying, Naboth cursed God and the king. So they took him outside the city and stoned him to death. Then they sent to Jezebel, saying, Naboth has been stoned, he is dead. As soon as she heard that, Naboth had been stoned and was dead, Jezebel said to Ahab, Go, take possession of the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, which he refused to give you for money, for Naboth is not alive, but dead. As soon as Ahab heard that Naboth was dead, Ahab sent out to go down to the vineyard of Naboth the Jisraelite to take possession of it. The word of the Lord.
SPEAKER_03Lord, listen to my growing. For you are not a God who delights in wickedness. Evil will not sojourn with you. The boastful will not stand before your eyes. You hate all evil doors. You destroy those who speak lies. The Lord abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful. For you bless the righteous Lord, you cover them with favor as with a shield. Lord, listen to my growing Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah. Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light on my path.
SPEAKER_02A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew. Jesus said to his disciples, You have heard it that it was said, an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth. But I say to you, do not resist an evildoer. But if anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also. And if anyone wants to sue you and take your coat, give your cloak as well. And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go also the second mile. Give to everyone who begs from you, and do not refuse anyone who wants to borrow from you the gospel of the Lord. Jesus is very much, and this is a big challenge for most of us in our Catholic faith. Jesus calls us to be pacifist, to not resist violence and resist wrong the wrong, or to to uh to have for retribution. And so often in our society we also continue to see, we just have to read the news, that something goes wrong, and even if it is an accident, people want retribution and and people will sue, sue the hospital system, sue the doctors, sue whomever to get some money. And it sometimes really saddens me when people say I'm waiting for my settlement, and and after I get my settlement, then I'm gonna do this and I'm gonna do that, and I'm gonna give money to Menrisa. I still have to wait for the money, by the way. But but it's it's something inner culture still so ingrained that there has to be retribution. Instead of stepping back and saying, How can good come out of bad, and to but to but not to fight back. And of course, in the first reading we have Naboth uh sorry uh Ahab, the king, he wants Naboth uh vineyard. And Naboth says, No, this is my ancestral lands and it's mine, I don't have it, have to give it to you. And he was perfectly right, and it's right in the book of Levichus, chapter 25, that he does not have to do that. Ancestral lands are honored. And actually, every 50 years there was a jubilee year when even if we got if someone got land, ancestral land from someone else, they had to give it back after 50 years. And so Ahab had really no right to his land. But then of course his wife comes in, Jezebel, she is she would be the I shall we say the spouse of Hell, who who of course changes everything around and severely abuses her power, the king's power, to get what they want. And and of course we we see this uh abuse of power right around us, in our families, in in local politics, uh, of course on a world scale, you know, you have North Korea, but also in democratic countries like ours. We can see how uh sometimes political leaders try to manipulate things a little bit in their own favor. And so we live in a very unjust world, it just is. And so it is so so important to be people of peace and not to look for retribution right away and to to be the sign for others. And actually, in the Roman Empire, very early on, there were many soldiers who would not fight anymore. I don't want to fight because it's it's against my faith. And so we are called to it. Today in the universal calendar, we have actually Peter Snow. He was a priest during the Reformation. He was one of the priests who came out of Douai in France, where there was a seminary, especially for priests who would go into Great Britain, the British Isles, to bring to remain the Cat to bring the communion to the Catholics. And he was apprehended, but he did not fight back. He did not fight back, and he was apprehended, and his price was to be they hung him and drew him and uh drew him and quartered him. And total abuse again of power. But he did not resist. A great example to us. Actually, in the catechism, catechism 2309, it gives us a real list of um when when it's justified to uh have war. And uh this uh just war, especially in our times, there's so many wars around the globe, but it gives us some insight or some stuff to pray with of when it is a just uh justice to uh to fight back, so to speak, and and to uh find a retribution. But there's just very slim circumstances that this can happen. Because um yeah, and to not to take advantage right away, and of course in the real world it never happens, but there's four different um different categories points they make in in the catechism. The damage inflicted by the aggressor on the nation of community of nations must be lasting, grave, and certain. So we have to be attacked and there has to be real damage. And also, we cannot uh to go to arms even if there's greater harm done, it's not a good war either. And so the use of arms must not produce evil in this order, graver than the evil to be eliminated, and there's some few other ones, but there's very uh few times that we really are allowed basically by canon law to fight back. But really, we don't need canon law if we're people of peace. And when something goes wrong, not to think right away about suing or finding someone who has to pay for it. It is it is totally against our faith and it's not of God. Mistakes are being made, sometimes things go wrong, and it just is. And to be and to find God in all of it, and to accept our crosses. Not easy stuff, and of course, um and we will not be in a peaceful solution not till the end of times, probably. Amen. So let us bring our prayers before the Lord. We pray for all those in a daily TV mass prayer intention book. We pray to the Lord. Lord Hear Prayer. During this month of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, let us pray for healing and families, that Christ's mercy may renew our hearts and restore our relationships. We pray to the Lord. With Pope Leo, we pray this month that sports be an instrument of peace, encounter, and dialogue among cultures and nations, and that they promote values such as respect, solidarity, and personal growth. We pray to the Lord. We pray for nations to work towards peaceful solutions for the many conflict zones around the world. We pray to the Lord. And for these prayers and the prayers in the silence of our own hearts, we lift them up to you, Lord. Amen. Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for through your goodness we have received the bread we offer you, the fruit of the earth and work of human hands. It will become for us the bread of life. By the mystery of this water and wine may become to share in the divinity of Christ who humbled himself to share inner humanity. Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for through your goodness we have received the wine we offer you, the fruit of the vine, and work of human hands. It will become our spiritual drink.
SPEAKER_05Blessed be God forever.
SPEAKER_02Humble spirit and contrite heart, may we be accepted by you, O Lord, and may our sacrifice in your sight as day be pleasing to you, Lord God. Wash me, O Lord, for my iniquities. Cleanse me of my sins. Thank you very much. Pray, my sisters and brothers, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the Almighty Father, accept us.
SPEAKER_04For the praise and glory of his name. Faring of God, Holy Church.
SPEAKER_02Look with favor, we pray, O Lord, upon the sacrificial gifts offered here, that celebrating in mystery the passion of your Son, we may honor it with loving devotion. Through Christ, O Lord. Amen. The Lord be with you. Lift up your hearts. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right and just it is truly right and just a duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks, Lord, Holy Father, Almighty and Eternal God. For just as through your beloved Son you created the human race, so also through him with great goodness you formed it anew. And so it is right that all your creatures serve you, all the redeemed praise you, all your saints with one heart bless you. Therefore we too extol you with all the angels, as in joyful celebration we acclaim.
SPEAKER_03Holy, holy Lord God of hosts, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest in the hest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord Hanna in the highest.
SPEAKER_02You are indeed holy, O Lord, the fount of all holiness. Make holy therefore these gifts we pray, by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewful, so that they may become for us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. At the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion. He took bread and giving you thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this all of you and eat of it, for this is my body, which will be given up for you. In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took the chalice and once more giving thanks, he gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this all of you, and drink from it, for this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me. The mystery of faith.
SPEAKER_03When we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim your death, O Lord, until you come again.
SPEAKER_02Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection, we offer you, Lord, the bread of life and the challenge of salvation, giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you. Humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of Christ, we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit. Remember, Lord, your church spread throughout the world, and bring her to the fullness of charity, together with Leo or Pope, Francis or Bishop, the other bishops, the clergy, and the entire people you have called your own. Remember also our sisters and brothers who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection, and all who have died in your mercy, welcome them into the light of your face. Have mercy on us all. We pray that with the blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with the Blessed Joseph, our spouse, with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages, we may merit to be co-heirs to eternal life, and may praise and glorify you through your Son, Jesus Christ. Through him and with him and in him, O God Almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, O glory and honor is yours for ever and ever. Amen. And at the Savior's command, informed by divine teaching, we dare to say, O Father, who are in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day your daily bread and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespassed against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, we pray from every evil. Graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Saviour Jesus Christ. Lord Jesus Christ, who said to the apostles, peace I leave you, my peace I give you. Look not on our sins, but on the faith of your church, and graciously grant our peace and unity in accordance with your will, who live and reign for ever and ever. Amen. The peace of the Lord be with you always, with your spirit. And let us offer each other a sign of peace.
SPEAKER_03You take away the sins of the world. You take away the sins of the world. Grant us peace.
SPEAKER_02Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb. Lord I am not worthy that you should enter on my heart.
SPEAKER_00Please join me now in this act of spiritual communion. My Jesus, I believe that you are present in this holy sacrament of the altar. I love you above all things, and I passionately desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come spiritually into my soul, so that I may unite myself wholly to you now and forever. Amen.
SPEAKER_02And let us pray. Nourished by these sacred gifts, O Lord, we give you thanks and beseech your mercy that by the pouring forth of your spirit the grace of integrity may endure in those your heavenly power has entered through Christ, O Lord. The Lord be with you. And may Almighty God bless you. Father, Son, Holy Spirit. Amen. Go in peace, glorifying the Lord by your life.
SPEAKER_05Thanks, be to God.
SPEAKER_00Our thanks to our donors for the gift of this month.
