From the St. Ignatius Chapel at the Manresa Jesuit Spiritual Renewal Center in Pickering, Ontario. The National Catholic Broadcasting Council presents the Daily TV Mass.
SPEAKER_02In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The grace and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of the Father, the friendship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And with yours, too. Welcome to the celebration of the Daily TV Mass. I am Father Michael Coots. The televising of this Mass is made possible by a contribution from a family who are parishioners of St. Clement Parish in Etobicoke, Ontario. This Mass is being offered for the sick, for those who care for them, for seniors everywhere, that they may find peace and for world peace. Our thanks to our donor for making it possible for tens of thousands of faithful across Canada, the United States, and around the world to share in this celebration. We continue our series of masses, remembering our Canadian martyrs, as we approach the centennial of the Martyr Shrine in Midland, Ontario this Saturday. Today we turn to St. Jeanne de Braboff, whose deep spirit of encounter and dedication continue to shape the church in Canada. Together, let us remember to give thanks and carry forward the witness of the martyrs in our lives today. And so as we celebrate this Eucharist, we ask the Lord to forgive us. Lord Jesus, you are the Prince of Peace. Lord, have mercy. Lord Jesus, you are the salt of the earth. Christ have mercy. Lord Jesus, you are the light to all nations. Lord, have mercy.
SPEAKER_04Lord have mercy.
SPEAKER_02May Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life.
SPEAKER_04Amen.
SPEAKER_02Grant, Almighty God, that always pondering spiritual things, we may carry out in both word and deed that which is pleasing to you. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and governs with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, forever and ever.
SPEAKER_00A reading from the second book of Kings. And in the ninth year of Zedekiah's reign, in the tenth month, on the tenth day of the month, King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon came with all his army against Jerusalem and laid siege to it. They built siege works against it all around. So the city was besieged until the eleventh year of King Zedekiah. On the ninth day of the fourth month, the famine became so severe in the city that there was no food for the people of the land. Then a breach was made in the city wall. The king, with all the soldiers, fled by night by the way of the gate between the two walls, by the king's garden. Though the Chaldeans were all around the city, they went in the direction of the Arabah. But the army of the Chaldeans pursued the king and overtook him in the plains of Jericho. All his army was scattered, deserting him. Then they captured the king and brought him up to the king of Babylon at Riblah, who passed a sentence on him. They slaughtered the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes, and then put out the eyes of Zedekiah. They bound him in feathers and took him to Babylon. In the fifth month, on the seventh day of the month, which was the nineteenth year of King Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, and Nebuzaradon, the captain of the bodyguard, a servant of the king of Babylon, came to Jerusalem. He burned the house of the Lord, the king's house, and all the houses of Jerusalem. Every great house he burned down. All the army of the Chaldeans who were in the captain of the guard broke down the walls around Jerusalem. And Buzarodan, the captain of the guard, carried into exile the rest of the people who were left in the city, and the deserters who had defected to the king of Babylon, and all the rest of the population. But the captain of the guard left some of the poorest people of the land to be vine dressers and tillers of the soil. The word of the Lord.
SPEAKER_03We hung up. If I forget, let my right hand with my song be s if I have a forest for sickness and enjoy suffering.
SPEAKER_02A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew. When Jesus had come down from the mountain, great crowds followed him. There was a leper who came to him and knelt before him, saying, Lord, if you choose, you can make me clean. Jesus stretched out his hands and touched him, saying, I do choose, be made clean. Immediately the leprosy was cleansed. Then Jesus said to him, See that you say nothing to anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded as a testimony to them. The gospel of the Lord. Our second reading is the gospel, where the faith of this man with leprosy comes to Jesus. During this week, we have been celebrating the feast or the faith of eight Jesuits who were, not eight Jesuits, but seven Jesuits and one Doné, a helper, who were martyred in this area. Three of them were martyred in Oreusville, New York State, very close to Albany. And so we hear the stories of René Gopil, Isaac Jogues, today Jeanne de Brabaf, and tomorrow we'll hear the story of Noel Chabanel, my Father John O'Brien, who is the current director of the shrine. In fact, we celebrate two centennials this year, or this today actually. The first is a hundred years of the martyr shrine, and this is what we read in the history of the martyr shrine. Fifty years ago, on the 26th of June 1976, a special golden anniversary mass in honor of the dedication of the shrine was celebrated in the church at Midland, Ontario. The principal celebrant, Archbishop Philip Pocock of Toronto, Maurice Cardinal Roy, preached the homily, also concelebrating with seven bishops and archbishops. Tomorrow, our own Archbishop, Francis Cardinal Leo, will be celebrating the Mass. I do not know how many concelebrants there will be, but there you can be sure there will be a lot of music, a lot of celebration, a lot of food, a lot of entertainment. 400 years ago, we celebrated a different anniversary. Namely, 400 years ago, Saint Jean de Brabaf, who I will talk about a little later today, landed on the Nautava Sega Bridge. He had come down all the way from Quebec. He had come down the French River, then to the Notava Sega River, and then into the bay. He had come with a whole group of Vendats. It had taken them months to go up to Quebec to trade. And now they had come back. They had been away for a long time from their families. So as soon as they came to Notawasega Beach, they left the young missionary with all his luggage on the bay, and they went on into their own villages to meet their own family and to meet their own friends and to have their meal that was so typical of themselves. And here was this young native on the Notava Sega beach. And I thought to myself, if I were left there, I would have just knelt down and cried, Mom, where are you? But he instead raised his hands to God and thanked God for all the vocation that he had and the call to come and serve the people of the Huron country, wrongly called Huron because the natives were called Vendats. There was no entertainment, there was no music, and definitely there was no food. But this young man who had left Normandy was 33 years old, the same age at which Jesus Christ died. And he came with great faith, trusting in the Lord that he would continue to proclaim the good news to the people. He had a great love and a respect for the people, for their traditions, even though they were so different from his own. He took trouble to learn the language, and so much so that the people loved him very much. He even went so far as to create a hymn that we sing every Christmas. It's called the Huron Carol, and it is basically Jesu Ahatonaya. It's a beautiful carol with a haunting melody. But unfortunately, the political situation made the situation very difficult at that time. And soon the French were defeated by the British, and Saint Jean de Brabof had to return to France. And this is what we read. In the history of the shrine, Brabof had spent three years with the Vendarts of Ontario, winning their love and respect to such a degree that they wept when he was recalled to Quebec. We still do not know how to love the master as you do, they said. Political situation obliged him to return to Europe in that year. But he was back in Canada in 1633 and among his beloved Hurons the following year. He labored there until in 1649. And while he labored there, he had a vision of a cross in the sky, which was a premonition of the way he himself would die. He lived with the people, he respected the people, he worked with his fellow Jesuits, but although there were five of them that were there, they did not know what was the situation. There was no cell phones or newscasts or newspapers. They only knew by word of mouth and sometimes weeks later what happened. When Isaac Chogues and Jeanne de Gabriel Lalma and René Gupil were killed in Oriusville in the New York state next to Albany, they did not know about it until weeks and months and perhaps years later. So here they were captured by the enemy, the Iroquois, and were taken to St. Ignace, which is about 12 kilometers away from the present Martyrday shrine, and there they were martyred. Jeanne de Brebef, who was the stronger of the two, died on the 16th of March 1649. Gabriel Lalma, who was his assistant and had been there only for four or five years and of a weaker constitution, lasted through the torture for another day. And he died on the feast of St. Patrick, 17th of March 1649. As you walk on the grounds of the martyr shrine, you can almost feel the courage and the strength of these martyrs. May our lives respect, follow that respect, and be able to put into our own life the faith that led the martyrs to this stage. God bless you all. Will you join me now as we pray together? For all those in our daily TV Mass Prayer Intention book, we pray to the Lord. During this month of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, let us pray for healing of families that Christ's mercy may renew our hearts and restore our relationships. We pray to the Lord. During this month of June, with Pope Leo, we pray that sports may be an instrument of peace, encounter, and dialogue among cultures and nations, and they may promote values like respect, solidarity, and personal growth. We pray to the Lord. And we make this prayer through our martyrs, Saint Jean de Brabof, Saint Isaac Jogues, Saint Gabriel Lalma, Saint Charles Garnier, Saint Antoine Daniel, Saint Noel Chabanel, Saint René Goupil, Saint Jean de Lalande, Blessed Catherine Quita, Lord, grant food and shelter to those who lack that today, and peace and charity to those who are fortunate enough to enjoy these gifts through Christ our Lord. Amen. Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation, for through your goodness we have this bread we offer you, fruit of the earth and work of human hands, it will become for us the bread of life. May we share in the divinity of Christ to humble himself to share in our humanity. Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation, for through your goodness we have this wine we offer you, fruit of the vine and work of human hands, it will become for us our spiritual drink. Lord God, be pleased to accept these gifts that we offer to you with humble and contrite hearts. Thank you. Pray, my sisters, my brothers, that this our sacrifice be acceptable to God, the Almighty Father.
SPEAKER_05May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands, but praise the glory of his name for our church.
SPEAKER_02As we celebrate your mysteries and our martyrs at Martyr Shrine, O Lord, with the observance that is your due, we humbly ask you that what we offer in honor of your majesty may profit us for salvation. We make this prayer through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Lord be with you. Lift up your hearts. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right and just it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere, to give you thanks. Lord, Holy Father, Almighty and Eternal God, for just as through your beloved Son you created the human race, so also through him with great goodness you formed it anew. And so it is right that all creatures should serve you, all redeem, praise you, and all your saints with one heart bless you. Therefore we too extol you with all the angels, as in joyful celebration we acclaim.
SPEAKER_03Oh son himself Oh son himself in on him.
SPEAKER_02You are indeed holy, O Lord, the fount of all holiness. Make holy therefore these gifts by sending down your spirit upon them like the dew fall, so that they may become for us the body and blood of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. At the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion, he took bread, and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this, all of you, and eat of it, for this is my body which will be given up for you. In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took the chalice. Once more giving thanks, he gave the chalice to his disciples, saying, Take this, all of you, and drink from it, for this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me.
SPEAKER_03The mystery of faith when we hear this breath and treating his car, we proclaim your teth until you come.
SPEAKER_02Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection, we offer you, Lord, the bread of life and the chalice of salvation, giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you. Humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of Christ, we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit. Remember, Lord, your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity, together with Leo, our Pope, Francis, our bishop, all the clergy, and this entire people of God. Remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection, and all who have died in your mercy, welcome them into the light of your face. Have mercy on us all, that with the blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with Blessed Joseph, her spouse, with the blessed apostles, with Saint Jean de Brabaf and Isaac Jog and their companions, and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages, we may merit to be co-heirs to eternal life and praise and glorify you through your Son, Jesus Christ. Through him, with him and in him, O God Almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours forever and ever. At the Savior's command and formed by divine teaching, we dare to say, Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, from every evil, graciously grant peace in our day, that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin, safe from all distresses, we await the blessed hope, the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Lord Jesus Christ, you said to your apostles, peace I leave you, my peace I give you. Look not on our sins, but on the faith of your church, and graciously grant a peace and unity in accordance with your will, who live and reign forever and ever. Peace of the Lord be with you always. And with your spirit. Let us share with one another a sign of this peace and friendship.
SPEAKER_03You take off with us all mercy on have come. You take off with the sins of health.
SPEAKER_02Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those who are called to the supper of the Lamb. Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed. May the body and blood of Christ bring us and all our dear ones unto life everlasting.
SPEAKER_01My Jesus, I believe that you are present in this holy sacrament of the altar. I love you above all things, and I passionately desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come spiritually into my soul, so that I may unite myself wholly to you now and forever. Amen.
SPEAKER_02Grant, we pray, Almighty God, that we may experience the effects of the salvation which is pledged to us by these mysteries and through the faith of our martyrs at the martyr shrine, through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, forever and ever. The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. May Almighty God bless you, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen. The Mass has been celebrated. Go in peace.
SPEAKER_01Our thanks to our donors for the gift of this Mass.
