From the St. Ignatius Chapel at the Manresa Jesuit Spiritual Renewal Center in Pickering, Ontario. The National Catholic Broadcasting Council presents the Sunday TV Mass.

SPEAKER_01

Welcome to the celebration of the Sunday TV Mass on the 13th Sunday of Ordinary Time. I'm Father Hank van Meyle. The televising of this Mass is made possible by the contribution from Steve the Young from Surrey, British Columbia. This Mass is offered in loving memory of his wife Tina the Young, who went to heaven on June 28, 2021. May Steve, their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren be united with her again one day in God's kingdom. May your soul and the souls of the faithful departed rest in peace. Amen. In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, Amen. The peace of the Lord be with you. And as we have placed ourselves before the Lord on the Sunday, we again recall our own weakness, our own need for God's guidance. So we say together, I confess to Almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and what I failed to do. Through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault. Therefore I ask Blessed Mary, ever virgin, all the angels and saints, and to you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God. May Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. Amen. Lord have mercy. Christ have mercy. Lord have mercy. And on this Sunday we say together, Glory to God in the highest. And on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory. Lord God, Heavenly King, O God Almighty Father, Lord Jesus Christ, only begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. You take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. You are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us, for you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit in the glory of God the Father. Amen. And let us pray. O God, who through the grace of adoption chose us to be children of light, grant we pray that we may not be wrapped up in the darkness of error, but always be seen to stand in the bright light of truth. True, O Lord, Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen.

A reading from the second book of Kings. One day Elisha was passing through Shunam, where a wealthy woman lived, who urged him to have a meal. So whenever he passed that way, he would stop there for a meal. And she said to her husband, Look, I am sure that this man who regularly passes our way is a holy man of God. Let us make a small roof chamber with walls and put there for him a bed, a table, a chair, and a lamp, so that he can stay there whenever he comes into us. One day when Elisha came there, he went up to the chamber and lay down there. He said to his servant, Hazai, What then may be done for the woman? Elijah said, Call her. When the servant had called her, she stood at the door. Elijah said, At this season, in due time, you shall embrace a son. The word of the Lord.

SPEAKER_03

I will sing of your steadfast love, O Lord, forever. With my mouth I will proclaim your faithfulness to our generations. I declare that your steadfast love is established forever. Your faithfulness is as firm as the heavens. Blessed are the people who know the festal shout, who are colloid in the light of your countenance, exalt in your name alone, and extol your righteousness. For you are the glory of the strength. By your favor our horn is exalted, for a shield belongs to the Lord, our king to the holy wine of Israel.

SPEAKER_00

Therefore, we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that Jesus Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. But if we had died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again. Death no longer has dominion over him. The death he died, he died to sin once for all. But the life he lives, he lives to God. So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. The word of the Lord.

SPEAKER_01

Whoever welcomes you welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. Whoever welcomes a prophet in the name of a prophet will receive a prophet's reward. And whoever welcomes a righteous person in the name of a righteous person will receive the reward of the righteous. And whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones in the name of a disciple, truly I tell you, that person will not lose the reward. The gospel of the Lord. And for most of us, that's a lifelong journey to give up control. And it's not easy. So often I hear people coming to me for spiritual direction or confession that they're very angry with spouses, children, and so on. And I say, so why are you so angry with them? Because they're not doing what I want them to do. And it's so common. But it's the core of it is they have not given up, they have not given their life to God. And coming to God is about service. And so Jesus in in a gospel reading very much says, if you love father, mother or children and so on more than me, then you're not worthy of the kingdom of God. And it's about embracing that cross. And in the second reading of Romans, again, too, it's about dying to our sins, dying to self. And that's the hardest thing we can do. But it starts, it is a slow process for most of us. That to embrace our cross and to be become persons for others. And it does not mean that there's nothing we can do for ourselves, but it is thinking of those around us and not uh wanting to have our own way all the time. That people should do what I want them to do. It's never gonna happen. No spouse is gonna do exactly what the other spouse wants to do, and it's actually very oppressive when that happens and it breaks down so many relationships. But it's in this these lines, these kind gifts we do in the little things. In our first reading of Two Kings, we have an unnamed woman at Shunum, and she sees the prophet Elisha coming by all the time, and offers him food and shelter, and even builds a room for him so he can rest when he comes by. And in the end, of course, Elisha says, What can we do for her? How can we do something for her? And he finds out that she's barren, and especially in that culture, a woman who was barren, who could not uh conceive a child, was really kind of looked down on. Although she was a woman of standing, uh a woman of influence in her community. But no doubt people would be talking behind the scenes about her that she really could not uh not bear a child. And so he gives the gift. Next time I come by, next year when I come by, you will have a son, and uh because you've shown your kindness, and this is the more we go that way, the more we can realize that it's not about us, the more we can reach out, the more we also realize how God blesses us with beautiful people around us who also will give back. And it's not about giving back, but it's they will give back generously, and our hearts will be touched in many ways we would not even have imagined, and so but it's a slow process, except a few people, some of the saints, who really would be able to do that right away. And as I was praying with this, uh I had to think of Therese of Lejeu, doctor of the church, who only died at age 24 of tuberculosis, and who early on in her life discovered it's all about giving up our life to God, giving it all back to God, and not to be afraid. And and she herself too says in her in her book The Story of her Soul, her autobiography, that she learned how Jesus does gracious deeds if we self-surrender in surprising ways. And she found that out very early on. I live in a religious community, and the joke is if you can live in a religious community, you can live anywhere, because we have to live with all the people we never would choose to live with, and everyone has their own inchies. And so one of the things he says, I see now that true charity consists in bearing with the faults of those about us, never being surprised at their weakness, but edified at the least sign of virtue. At the least sign of virtue. And but if we can bear with others, there's things change, the dance changes, and so often there is a certain way of dealing with one another. Every family I say has a dance. A certain dance, and it can be a stinky dance, especially if there's uh control issues. But when we can give our life back to God, that chance, the dance changes, and people become much more hospitable. People will look out for one another. But it starts with us, it starts with me, right in my family. And the more I can surrender myself to God, the more God will work through me. And this is for everyone, especially for parents and and grandparents and so on. It's about giving up of self and not to be afraid, just uh just to give up on wanting to control. And if and controlling, it's it's a little animal in each one of us. We have to temper right along our life. Amen. So let us stand and let us profess our faith using the words of the apostles' creed. I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, O Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered on the Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell, on the third day rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty, from there who will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting. Amen. And let us bring our prayers before the Lord. We pray for all those in our daily TV Mass Prayer Intention Book. We pray to the Lord. Lord in our prayer. During this month of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, let us pray for healing in families that Christ's mercy may renew our hearts and restore our relationships. We pray to the Lord. We pray for the needs of all of our daily TV mass benefactors who make this ministry possible, which touches the hearts of tens of thousands of the faithful around the world. We pray to the Lord. And for these prayers and the prayers in the silence of our own hearts, we lift them up to you, Lord. Amen.

SPEAKER_04

May the Lord accept the sacrifice to your grace and glory of misery.

SPEAKER_01

O God, who graciously accomplished the effects of your mysteries, grant we pray that the deeds by which we serve you may be worthy of these sacred gifts. Through Christ, O Lord. The Lord be with you.

SPEAKER_04

And your spirit.

SPEAKER_01

Lift up your hearts.

SPEAKER_04

Lift them up to the Lord.

SPEAKER_01

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right and just it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere, to give you thanks, Lord, Holy Father, Almighty and Eternal God, through Christ our Lord. For through his paschal mystery, he accomplished the marvelous deeds by which he has freed us from the yoke of sin and death, summoning us to the glory of being now called a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people to your own possession, to proclaim everywhere your mighty works, for you have called us out of darkness into your own wonderful light. And so, with angels and archangels, with thrones and dominions, and with all the hosts and powers of heaven, we sing the hymn of your glory as without end we acclaim.

SPEAKER_03

Holy holy God of an earth are full of your glory Osan who comes in the name of thy heart Ozan Ozan.

SPEAKER_01

You are indeed holy, O Lord, the fount of all holiness. Make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dof all, so that they may become for us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. At the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion. He took bread and giving you thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this all of you and eat of it, for this is my body, which will be given up for you. In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took the chalice and once more giving thanks. He gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this all of you and drink from it, for this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me. Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection, we offer you, Lord, the bread of life and the chalice of salvation, giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you. Humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of Christ we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit. Remember, Lord, your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity, together with Leo or Pope, Francis or Bishop, the Order Bishops, the clergy, and the entire people you have called your own. Remember also our sisters and brothers who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection, and all who have died in your mercy, welcome them into the light of your face. Have mercy on us all. We pray that with the blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with Blessed Joseph, our spouse, with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages, we may merit to be co-heirs to eternal life, and may praise and glorify you through your Son Jesus Christ. Through him and with him and in him, O God Almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours for ever and ever. Amen. And at the Savior's command and formed by divine teaching, we dare to say, Our Father, who are in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not in temptation, but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, we pray from every evil. Graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Saviour, Jesus Christ. For the Kingdom and the Father, and the glory are you. Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your apostles, peace I leave you, my peace I give you. Look not on our sins, but on the faith of your church, and graciously grant our peace and unity in accordance with your will, who live and reign for ever and ever. Amen. The peace of the Lord be with you always. And let us offer each other a sign of peace. Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb. Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.

SPEAKER_02

Please join me now in this act of spiritual communion. My Jesus, I believe that you are present in this holy sacrament of the altar. I love you above all things, and I passionately desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come spiritually into my soul, so that I may unite myself wholly to you now and forever. Amen.

SPEAKER_01

Through Christ, O Lord. The Lord be with you.

SPEAKER_04

And with your spirit.

SPEAKER_01
