Welcome to the celebration of the Daily TV Mass. I am Father Michael Coots. The televising of this Mass is made possible by a contribution from an anonymous donor from Point Clair, Quebec. This Mass is being offered for the intentions of the family, for those attending Mass, and for those at home. We know that the television mass brings comfort and consolation to people all across Canada, the United States, and around the world. And so on their behalf, I thank you. And now as we begin to celebrate this Eucharist, let us ask the Lord, the God of mercy and compassion, to forgive us our sins. You were sent to heal the contrite. Lord, have mercy. You came to call sinners, Christ have mercy. You are seated at the right hand of the Father to intercede for us. Lord, have mercy. May Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. Let us pray. Draw near to your servants, O Lord, and answer their prayers with unceasing kindness, that for those who glory in you as their creator and guide, you may restore what you have created and keep safe what you have restored. We make this prayer through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, forever and ever.

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew. Jesus said to his disciples, See, I am sending you out like sheep into the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. Beware of them, for they will hand you over to the councils and flog you in their synagogues, and you will be dragged before governors and kings because of me, as a testimony to them and to the Gentiles. When they hand you over, do not worry about how you are to speak or what you are to say, for what you are to say will be given to you at that time, for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your father speaking through you. Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child, and the children will rise against their parents and have them put to death, and you will be hated by all because of my name. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next, for truly I tell you, you will not have gone through all the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes. The Gospel of the Lord. In a certain town, a certain city rather, in Northern Ontario, there was a lot of violence, and the mayor of that city decided, we have violence in the world, we have violence in our country, we have violence right in our city. So he started a competition and said, I want a picture, a huge big picture that depicts peace. And among the many entries, two were chosen. One was a painter who painted Lake Huron with its calmness, beautiful sunshine skies, sunshine and blue skies, and in the foreground were fields of grain with their shoots in the air, swaying in the breeze, a picture of peace and calm. The second picture was the picture of Niagara Falls. You could almost hear the thunder of that falls in the picture. There were rocky crags, the sky was dark, and right in the middle of the falls, there was a bush which had luxuriant leaves and brilliant flowers, and a monarch butterfly flying around. And the mayor of the city said, I'm giving the prize to the second one, because he has painted reality. The reality is there is noise and confusion all around us. There are sharp rocks of unemployment, of marriages breaking up, of fights and anger among neighbors. But if in the middle of that you can keep a calm mind, a tender heart, a ear open to the listening of the people who need you, an eye to see those who are hungry and thirsty, then you will be at peace right in the middle of all this chaos. Rady Kipling said the same thing in his beautiful poem called If. If you can dream dreams and not make dreams your master, if you can think and not make thoughts your aims, if you can meet triumph and disaster and treat the two impostors just the same, you will have harmony, you'll have order, you will have peace. And that is the basis of our first reading from Hosea today. Hosea has been called the prophet of hope and consolation. But he does not give us hope like a placebo. It is not based on false promises and pies in the skies. He speaks about peace, a peace that is based on truth, a peace that is based on justice, a peace that is based on the acknowledgement there is one God, and I am not God. There is a God above who gets that peace among us. And therefore, the very first step for peace is to acknowledge the fact that you and I are frail, are weak, are sinners, and therefore we need to make repentance. And he speaks about the Exodus experience when the Israelites were brought out of Egypt, and when they were brought into the wilderness, God led them with a pillar of fire during the night and a pillar of cloud during the day. God cared for them. Just like the mayor of the city said, if you have a tender heart, a benevolent heart, a ear to listen to the people that are in need, an eye to see the people that need help and justice, then that was the type of God that they had. But did they acknowledge that God? Not in the least. They complained, they whined, they groaned, and they said, you know, you're not taking care of us. We want to go back to Israel, to Egypt, and back into the slavery. And Hosea said, we have to acknowledge that that was wrong. Not only that, but God took care of you. He sent manna from heaven, he sent uh water from a rock. When you were thirsty, he gave you to drink, and you were still complaining and not trusting in the Lord. And worse still, you finally decided that you really didn't need God from above, and so you created an idol, a golden calf that you bowed down and adored to. How stupid, how foolish could you be? And the people acknowledged that. And because of that, you found that things changed radically. And he gives us this beautiful description of how the change came within the people of Israel and within brought about peace, consolation, and harmony. He says, Your gardens will grow like the cedars of Lebanon. There will be vines, and they will produce fruit that will cheer the heart of men and women. And finally, you'll have your gardens growing like lilies of the field. A beautiful, peaceful situation, quite different from our gospel, which is harsh as ever. Jesus says a child will rebel against his parents and brother against brother. Where did that all come from? You see, in Matthew's gospel, there were a lot of Jewish people who decided to take up the cross of Christ. They decided to believe in Christ, and immediately there were divisions. Because to take up the cross of Christ meant to love your neighbor and to even forgive your enemy, which was totally false from the Jewish perspective because it said an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth, and you should vanquish your enemy. If I kept the Sabbath, if I kept the Torah, if I observed the tradition, then I would have three graces from God. I would have health of mind and body, I would have wealth, and I would have victory over my enemies. And Jesus said, no, I don't need all that. I need to forgive my enemies. And so these Jewish people who decided to follow Christ were in a quadary. We want to be Jews, but we also want to be Christians. And they could be that because Jesus himself was a Jew. But the problem was that family and village was so important. It was necessary for their economic growth, for their security, and to hold the family together. And they were having to give this up because father was handing son over to the authorities. There was division in the families. And the Lord said, be not afraid. This will come to take place. And so what did they do? The people who were Jews and believed in Christ, they had two systems. One, they built their own synagogues where they could practice their Sabbath, where they could practice their traditions, where they could keep the laws of the Jewish people. And then on Sunday, they would go to their churches and they would celebrate the day of the Lord's resurrection. And this carried on until the 6th century, when Islam took over. And when they saw the division between the Gentiles, Christians, and the Jewish Christians, they began to realize we've got division here, we can conquer them. And so gradually one side failed, and they began to get together, unite together, to carry the cross of Christ every day, to love their enemies and to be like Christ, and they were not afraid. They went out and proclaimed salvation to the whole world. God bless you all. Join me now as we bring our prayers before God. As a community prayer, let us give thanksgiving for grandparents and elders like Saint Joachim and Anne, who nurture faith and family across generations with quiet strength. We pray to the Lord. For Pope Leo's intention for the month of July, let us pray that we may learn again how to discern, to choose the paths of life, and reject everything that leads us away from Christ and from the gospel. We pray to the Lord. Lord, grant food and shelter to those who lack these today, and peace and charity to those who are fortunate enough to enjoy these gifts. We make this prayer through Christ our Lord. Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation, for through your goodness we have this bread we offer you. Fruit of the earth and work of human hands, it will become for us the bread of life. Through the mystery of this wine and water, may we come to share in the divinity of Christ, to humble Himself to share in our humanity. Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation, for through your goodness we have this wine we offer you. Fruit of the wine and work of human hands, it will become for us our spiritual drink. Lord God, be pleased to accept these gifts that we offer to you with humble and with contrite hearts. Thank you. Pray, my sisters, my brothers, that this our sacrifice be acceptable to God the Almighty Father.

Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection, we offer you, Lord, the bread of life and the chalice of salvation, giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you. Humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of Christ, we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit. Remember, Lord, your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity, together with Leo, our Pope, Francis, our bishop, all the clergy and this entire people of God. Through him with him and in him, O God Almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours forever and ever. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, from every evil. Graciously grant peace in our day, that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin, safe from all distresses. We await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Lord Jesus Christ, you said to your apostles, peace I leave you, my peace I give you. Look not on our sins, but on the faith of your church and graciously grant to us peace and unity in accordance with your will, who live and reign forever and ever. The peace of the Lord be with you always. And with your ears. Wherever you are, let us share that sign of peace with one another.
