Welcome to the celebration of the Daily TV Mass. I'm Father Ernie DeCicho. The televising of this Mass is made possible by the contributions from two donors. The first is offered in memory of the deceased members of the Groves and Baudette families of Beaconsfield, Quebec, and in support of the Daily TV Mass. The second is the Guadagno family of Toronto, Ontario. They would like to dedicate this Mass in loving memory of their beloved mother, Rosa Maddalena Guadagno. A reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah. In the days of Ahaz, King of Judah, King Rezin of Aram, and King Pekka, son of Ramaliah of Israel, went up to attack Jerusalem, but could not mount an attack against it. When the house of David heard that Aram had allied himself with Ephraim, the heart of Ahaz and the heart of his people shook as the trees of the forest shake before the wind. Then the Lord said to Isaiah, Go out to meet Ahaz, you and your son Shirjashub, at the end of the conduit of the upper pool on the highway to Fuller's Field. And say to him, Take heed, be quiet, do not fear, and do not let your heart be faint, because of these two smoldering stumps of firebrands, because of the fierce anger of Rezin and Aram and the son of Ramaliah. Because Aram with Ephraim and the son of Ramaliah has plotted evil against you, saying, Let us go up against Judah and cut off Jerusalem and conquer it for ourselves, and make the son of Tabil king in it. Therefore, thus says the Lord God, it shall not stand, and it shall not come to pass. For the head of Aram is Damascus, and the head of Damascus is resin. Within sixty-five years Ephraim will be shattered, no longer a people. The head of Ephraim is Samaria, and the head of Samaria is the son of Ramalia. If you do not stand firm in faith, you shall not stand at all. The word of the Lord.

Jesus began to reproach the cities in which most of his deeds of power had been done, because they did not repent. Woe to you, Corbazine, woe to you, Beth Sida, for if the deeds of power done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. But I tell you, on the day of judgment, it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon than for you. And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? No, you will be brought down to Hades. For if the deeds of power done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. But I tell you that on the day of judgment, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom than for you. The gospel of the Lord. During his time on earth, Jesus experienced a variety of human emotions. Most of all, he experienced love, and he gave that love so generously to everybody. I doubt very much that he ever experienced hate, because that human emotion was beyond him. Love. But in other instances, he had other emotions. Anger, when he cleansed the temple in Jerusalem, was a righteous anger, of course. And today, when he is reproaching these cities where most of his deeds of power had taken place, we get a sense of frustration that Jesus has with these cities, these groups of people who simply refuse to repent, who refuse to change their way of life, even after having witnessed so many wonders and signs. Do you ever get frustrated? I know I do. I get frustrated when I don't get my own way. And I have to remind myself all the time, it's not my way that counts, it's God's way. Well, Jesus was not getting frustrated because he didn't get his own way. He was frustrated because he had done everything out of love, out of goodness, kindness, compassion. That's why he did all those miracles, all those signs and wonders. Yes, to heal broken hearts and broken bodies, but also to lead people back to God. He wasn't giving them a show to witness. He was there for their conversion. He came down from heaven because he didn't want to condemn them, he wanted to save them. And how frustrated it must be when you do everything to save people and they refuse to be saved. He showed them God's love. He went whole days and even nights doing good for them, not for himself. Some people, no matter what they see, no matter what they witness, will simply have closed hearts. So no wonder Jesus gets frustrated. And maybe he's trying to put the fear of God into them. He reprimands them. But even that he does with love. Just like our parents have to do for us when we were children growing up. And we're going to go down the wrong path, they need to set us straight. Because they don't want us to get hurt. They don't want us to get lost. They don't want us to be on the wrong path. Even the reproaches, woe to you, Khorazine, woe to you, Bethsida, are done because Jesus loved these people and he wanted to save them. I'm reminded of the story of this terrible sinner who refused to repent. And a priest had gone to him trying to talk to him about God's infinite love, infinite mercy. He was so kind to him, trying to convince him to turn his ways around. Nothing worked. So they called for another priest to go. The priest met with him privately and the man converted. And afterwards, the first priest said, Well, what did you say to him? Nothing I could say or do would get through to him. And the other priest said, Well, I put the fear of hell into him. And then he changed. I wonder if that's what Jesus had to do here. I'm sure he's tried everything, being nice all the time, which he was. And if it didn't work, well, let's put a little fear of hell into them. Maybe that's gonna shake them up and make them realize they shouldn't keep going down the wrong path. Jesus so desperately wanted the salvation of everybody he met. He reached out to the prostitutes, the tax collectors, everybody he could convince to turn around and turn back to God. Maybe these people thought they were just so perfect already that they didn't need to change. I like when Jesus even approaches Capernaum because that was the town of St. Peter, where Jesus had to stay so many times. He practically lived there. And what did they think? Because Jesus had stuck around so many times, they were immune from judgment.

None of us is immune.

None of us, for that matter, can presume our own salvation. We trust in the Lord's infinite mercy and love. It's being offered to us all the time. But we have to respond. And the response that Jesus wants from us is not to go sit in sackcloth and ashes, but that we change our hearts. That we fill them with love for God and for our neighbor. That we become a little bit more like Jesus and a little bit less like the world. So let's hope that we don't have to be reprimanded and reproached like these cities of long ago. Let's pray that we who have experienced the wonders, the signs, the deeds of power that Jesus has done in our own lives, will bring us to deeper conversion. Will bring us closer to the Lord. And will keep us on the path that leads to eternal life. And now let's offer our prayers to God who always hears us and answers us in our need. First, we pray for all those in our daily TV Mass Prayer Intentions book. We pray to the Lord. As a community prayer, let us give thanks for grandparents and elders, like Saints Joachim and Anne, the grandparents of Jesus, who nurture faith and family across generations with quiet strength. We pray to the Lord. We continue to pray for peace in our troubled world, for an end to war and violence, for an end to hatred and division, for peace also in the church, and for peace in our families. We pray to the Lord. For all the sick and suffering, for all those in need of God's mercy and healing, for all those who have asked us to pray for them, all those we have promised to pray for. We pray to the Lord. Loving God, we ask you to hear all of our prayers and answer us with your mercy and with your love through Christ our Lord. Fruit of the earth and work of human hands, it will become for us the bread of life. Fruit of the vine and work of human hands, it will become our spiritual drink.

For just as through your beloved Son you created the human race, so also through him with great goodness you formed it anew. And so it is right that all your creatures serve you, all the redeemed praise you, and all your saints with one heart bless you. Therefore we too extol you with all the angels, as in joyful celebration we acclaim. Make holy, therefore, these gifts we pray, by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall, so that they may become for us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. At the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion, he took bread and giving thanks broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this, all of you, and eat of it, for this is my body which will be given up for you. In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took the chalice, and once more giving thanks, he gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this, all of you, and drink from it. For this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me.

Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection. We offer you, Lord, the bread of life and the chalice of salvation, giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you. Humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of Christ, we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit. Remember, Lord, your church spread throughout the world, and bring her to the fullness of charity, together with Leo, our Pope, and Francis, our bishop, and all the clergy. Remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy. Welcome them into the light of your face.
