Brothers and sisters, let us call to mind our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries. I confess to Almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done, in what I have failed to do through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault. Therefore I ask Blessing Mary, ever virgin, all the angels and saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew. But while everybody was asleep, the enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and then went away. So when the plants came up and bore grain, then the weeds appeared as well. And the slaves of the householder came and said to him, Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? Where then did these weeds come from? He answered, An enemy has done this. The slaves said to him, Then do you want us to go and gather them? But he replied, No. For in gathering the weeds, you would uproot the wheat along with them. Let both of them grow together until the harvest. And at harvest time I will tell the reapers, Collect the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned. But gather the wheat into my barn. Jesus put before them another parable. The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that someone took and sowed in his field. It is the smallest of all the seeds. But when it has grown, it is the greatest of shrubs and becomes a tree. So that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches. He told them another parable. The gospel of the Lord. I used to have a very heavy foot back in the day. That all changed about ten years ago when I was pulled over for speeding twice within the same year. I must admit fines and my auto insurance doubling in price was very difficult and even painful. I made a few changes and began scheduling in traveling time, which eliminate the need to speed from driving from one appointment to another appointment. So in my personal experience, police officers hide where there's obstruction of views and almost impossible to be detected, like the bottom of the hill or around the bend. They set up speed traps and monitor traffic to catch speeding drivers. One of the most common misconceptions about God is to think of God in this way, as the cosmic policeman or even an angry judge who is punitive and enjoys being an enforcer of strict justice without mercy. But this couldn't be further from the truth. God is unbelievably patient and merciful. It's beyond our comprehension. Even when God chastises, he never does it out of anger or with ill intent. When God disciplines us, he does so to correct us and heal us. Like we hear in the Job. For he wounds, but he also binds. He strikes, but his hand also heals. In today's gospel, Jesus taught the crowd using the parable of the wheat and the weed. The weed Jesus is referring to in the gospel is Darnell. It is also sometimes called false wheat because they look so similar, they're almost indistinguishable during the early stage of growth. Weeds are firstly invasive because they interfere with the crop yield by entwining with the root system of wheat. So they rob wheat of water, nutrients from soil, and a space to grow. They often serve as hosts for crop disease and they may provide shelter for insects. Jesus warned them about how good and evil will coexist in the world until the end of time. However, lack of immediate judgment does not mean that there will not be judgment and punishment at the end of time. It is sure to come. But in the meantime, God is being patient in order to protect the righteous. But unlike the wheat and the weed, the two that are different are growing alongside each other. We are a mixture of both. We are all a mixture of both good and bad, some Satanly qualities, but sinners. I once read a story about two boys who were altar service: a nine-year-old boy named Francesco and a ten-year-old boy named Annabelle, who were friends. One day they were serving at Mass and a fight broke out between them during Mass. Francesco got so angry he picked up a candlestick made out of brass and hit Annabelle over the head. Annabelle began to bleed and cry. Understandably, the priest kicked them out of the church that day. Fifty-five years later, they remained as best friends, and they're reminiscing about the fight that they had many years ago and laughed about it. So, who are these boys? Annabelle became Pope Leo XII, and Francesco succeeded him and became Pope Pius VIII. I'm sure if the people who attended the Mass or their parish priest on the day they had a fight in the church were told that they would one day become popes, they would not have believed you. They would have laughed at you. God is patient and faithful. Unlike in the parable, where the wheat and the weed are two different species that cannot jump from being one to another. Even terrible sinners can be transformed to a saint. God is giving us the gift of time, opportunities to repent and change our way of life. I've seen people experiencing conversion and souls being saved in their last moment while I was administering the sacrament of the anointing of the sick or hearing their confessions. Pope Francis had a wonderful description of what the church should be. He said, The church is not a museum of saints, but hospital for sinners. The church is a place of healing and mercy rather than a place of perfection. The story told of a man who was certainly not perfect. In fact, he was a drug addict, but he became a saint. Mark Ji Tinjiang was born in China in 1834. He was a devout Catholic, a loving husband and father, and a dedicated physician who treated the poor for free. When he was about 35 years old, Mark contracted a severe stomach ailment and treated himself with opium, a common medical practice at the time. This dispensancies spiraled into a lifelong struggle with addiction. Addiction was not understood as a disease in 19th century China. Because his repeated use of the drug was viewed as a grave, unrepentant sin, his priest scolded him and forbade him from going to confession or receiving the Eucharist. Barred from the sacrament for 30 years, Mark felt deep shame, but he never stopped attending Mass, praying for deliverance and relying on God's mercy. He did everything within his power to be cured from his addiction, but he couldn't. So when his efforts failed and there was no hope for him, he turned to God's mercy and prayed that if he could not be cured of his addiction, he would be granted the grace to die a martyr for Christ. During the Boxer Revolution in 1900, anti-Christian militants arrested Mark G. Tinjang along with his family and several other Christians. They were given the choice to renounce their faith or face death. Mark refused to abandon Christ. As his family and companions were executed, he specifically chose to be the last to die so that he could comfort his loved ones as they faced death, singing the litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary until it was his turn. Pope John II canonized him as one of the 120 martyr saints of China on October 1st of 2000. Even though St. Mark Tinjang struggled with addiction, through God's grace, he was saved and even became a saint. Even when we find ourselves in hopeless situations, God can make transformation and salvation possible. He created heaven for you and he wants you there. Remember, God sees you. He knows all the struggles and sins you have difficulty with. He can save you, and he will save you if you will run to him. Let us profess our faith together. I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered in the Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting.
