Fr. John Bertao
From the St. Ignatius Chapel at the Manresa Jesuit Spiritual Renewal Center in Pickering, Ontario. The National Catholic Broadcasting Council presents the Daily TV Mass.
SPEAKER_01Hello and welcome to the celebration of Daily TV Mass. I'm Father John Berteo. The television of this Mass is made possible by the contributions from three donors. The first is Carola Bratzl from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, for her intentions and for her family, both living and deceased. The second is Windy Shek from Kwai Cheng, Hong Kong, in support of the Daily TV Mass. The third is Ray Clancy from Denvon, Alberta, for the repose of the souls of his wife Anna Faye Clancy, daughter-in-law Sandy Clancy, and cousin Marianne Clancy. May their souls and the souls of the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace. Also, in thanksgiving for blessings received and for the well-being of his family members. Our thanks to the donors for the gift of this Mass, that we begin with the sign of our salvation in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the community of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
SPEAKER_02And with your Spirit.
SPEAKER_01Brothers and sisters, let us acknowledge our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries. You were sent to heal the contrite of heart, Lord have mercy. Lord have mercy. You came to call sinners, Christ have mercy. You are seated at the right hand of the Father to your deceit for us, Lord have mercy.
SPEAKER_02Lord have mercy.
SPEAKER_01Almighty God have mercy on us. Forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life. Let us pray. Look upon us, O God, creator and ruler of all things, and that we may feel the working of your mercy, grant that we may serve you with all our heart. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.
SPEAKER_00Hear what the Lord says. Rise, plead your case before the mountains, and let the hills hear your voice. Hear, you mountains, the controversy of the Lord, and you enduring foundations of the earth, for the Lord has a controversy with his people, and he will contend with Israel. O my people, what have I done to you? In what have I wearied you? Answer me. For I brought you up from the land of Egypt and redeemed you from the house of slavery, and I sent before you Moses, Aaron, and Miriam. With what shall I come before the Lord and bow myself before God on high? Shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves a year old? Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams, with ten thousands of rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? He has told you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you but to do justice and to love kindness and to walk humbly with your God? The word of the Lord.
SPEAKER_04Gather to me my faithful ones who made a covenant with me by sacrifice. The heavens declare his righteousness, for God Himself is judge. To the upright I will show the saving power of God. Not for your sacrifices do I rebuke you. Your burnt offerings are continually before me. I will not accept a ball from your house or gods from your falls. To thee your pride I will show the saving part of God. What right have you to recite my statues or take my covenant on your lips? For you hate discipline, and you cast my words behind you. To the pride I will show the saving power of God Hallelujah. If today you hear God's voice, harden not your hearts.
SPEAKER_01But Jesus answered them, An evil and adulterous generation asks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it, except the sign that the prophet Jonah. For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the valley of the sea monster, so for three days and three nights the Son of Man will be at the heart of the earth. The people of Nineveh will rise up and the judgment at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the proclaiming of at the proclamation of Jonah and see something greater than Jonah is here. The Queen of the South will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because she came from the ends of the earth to listen to the wisdom of Solomon and see something greater than Solomon is here. The Gospel of the Lord. As usual, I'll start with asking a very short and simple question. The question is, how is your prayer life? Someone told me once that they say five rosaries a day. Five rosaries a day. And it prompted me to ask the question, of the five rosaries that you say a day, how many do you pray? Do you sometimes feel that God is just not listening to a praise? No matter how much you say, no matter what you say, that God is just not listening. Well, you know, you're not alone. I feel the same way too, many, many times. There are times that I will be sitting in the church trying to pray, perhaps even meditate, but my mind goes every direction, up and down, and all over the world, other than prayer. I call it multitasking. Too many things in my mind going around at the same time. So, are you looking for a sign or for proof that God is indeed listening? See, Jesus gave us a rather stern warning to his generation when they demanded a sign from him. It was characteristic of the Jews that they demanded signs from God's messages to authenticate their claims. Jesus faulted them by one thing, and it's called spiritual adultery. It's the image of adultery was often used in the scriptures for describing apostasy or trying to cheat God. As some would say, trying to prove that someone would be wrong or false in their claim. The scriptures, both the Old and the New Testament, gives us the proof that some still ask the same question today. An example. When the religious leaders pressed Jesus to give proof of his claim to be the Messiah sent from God, he says in so many words that he is God's sign, and that they need no further evidence from heaven that he is the one, that he is the Son of God. The Ninevites recognized God's warning when Jonah spoke to them and they repented. And the Queen of Sheba recognized God's wisdom in Solomon. Jonah was God's sign, and his message was the message of God for the people of Nineveh. Unfortunately, the religious leaders of Jesus' day were not content to accept the signs right before their eyes. I mean, the real person, Jesus, God incarnate. They had rejected the message of John the Baptist, and now they reject Jesus, God's anointed, the one anointed, and they failed to heed to his message. Simeon had prophesied that Jesus' birth, that he was destined, and I quote, for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is spoken against that the thoughts of many would, and the thoughts and the hearts of many would be revealed. This is a quote from St. Luke's Gospel. You see, Jesus confirmed his message with many miracles in preparation for the greatest sign of all. What is that? You ask? Well, I'm glad you did. His resurrection on the third day from the dead. Now let's keep in mind that no matter how difficult you may find at times to know if God is listening to you and your needs, God knows our needs and hears our prayers, for sure. I share with you some words of wisdom that I came across. Our Lord Jesus, though through the gift of the Holy Spirit, offers us freedom from sin and ignorance. And he gives us the wisdom and understanding so that we may grow in the knowledge of God and his ways. So, do you thirst for God as part of my example? Do you hunger for prayer? Do you thirst for God? What I mean is, do you want to improve your prayer life and eventually share it with others? Do you want the wisdom that only God can give through his Holy Spirit? Well, you're not alone. I do too. It's possible. It is, it's possible, but it does not come overnight. I uh have learned that uh Saint Teresa of Kolkata also had some dark moments in her own life of prayer, yet she would think outside of herself, as she uh quoted once, and and and the sisters wrote for her, and I quote her I see God in every human being, and when I wash the lepers' womb, I feel I am nursing to the Lord Himself. Go figure. When I'm doing something for somebody else, I'm doing it for the Lord Himself. Also, she stated, she stated that prayer is as necessary as the air, as the blood in our bodies, as nothing to keep us alive but God's grace. Also, St. James the Apostle states that the wisdom from above is first of all, it's pure, it's peaceable, it's gentle, it's open to reason, it's full of mercy and good fruits. In other words, a double-minded person cannot receive this kind of wisdom. So you've got to do, don't multitask, do a little bit of a time. See, if you wish to be wise in God's ways, then we must humble ourselves before Him. Likewise, attentive, like students need to be attentive to if they wish to learn, and submit the wholeheartedly to the mind of the will of our lives. Listen to the professor, listen to one who's trying to teach you. You see, a single-minded heart and mind desire one thing alone, and that is God. God who is the source of all wisdom, God the source of all goodness, God the source of all truth and all knowledge. Dear friends in Christ, ask the Holy Spirit to fill you with the wisdom which comes from above, and to free your heart from all that would hinder God's loving action in your life. Most of all, and here's key. Most of all, something that I'm still trying to practice today, and that is patience. Be patient with yourself. God is patient with you, be patient with yourself, just as God is patient with all of us. So, are you still looking for proof? Suggestion get up from where you are after mass. Look into the mirror and see God's creation. Look beyond the wrinkles you might have first thing in the morning, maybe the bad hairdo, the messy hair. Look into your own eyes. Your own eyes. Have a good, good look and smile. Why? Because you are unique. You are special. You are loved. Look again at the reflection you see in the mirror. Because if you don't like that reflection, who's going to like it besides God? Please look at it and rejoice because you are loved. And speaking of loved, let me close with a prayer. Lord Jesus, guide me with your Holy Spirit, that I may grow in wisdom and knowledge of your love and truth. Free me from stubborn pride, that I may wholly desire to do what is pleasing to you. Amen. And we close in asking our blessed Mother to bless you each and every day with great patience and love, like she is. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen. Mary, Mother of our Savior, pray for us. Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for through us and received the bread we offer you. Fruit of the earth and work of human hands, it will become for us the bread of light. To the mystery of this water and wine, they become to share in the divinity of Christ, who humble themselves to share in our humanity. Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for if you have received the wine we offer you, fruit of the vine, and work of human hands, it will become our spiritual drink. Bless me, our prayer. With humble spirit, so glad you have my sacrifice in the sight of save being to you, Lord God. Lord, wash away my iniquity and cleanse me from my sins. Pray, brothers and sisters, that my sacrifice and yours be acceptable to God, the Almighty Father.
SPEAKER_02For our commitment of all of the church.
SPEAKER_01Look with favor on our supplications, O Lord, and in your kindness accept these your servants' offerings, that what each has offered to the honor of your name may serve the salvation of all through Christ our Lord.
SPEAKER_06Amen.
SPEAKER_01The Lord be with you. And with your strength, lift up your hearts. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is truly right and just our deed and our salvation, always in every word to give you thanks, Lord, Holy Father, Almighty Eternal God. For in goodness you created man, and when he was justly condemned, in mercy redeemed him through Christ our Lord. Through him the angels praise your majesty, the means of door and power stream were before you. Heaven and the virtues of heaven and the blessed seraphim worship together with exaltation. May our voices we pray join with theirs in humble praise as we acclaim.
SPEAKER_04Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hearts, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
SPEAKER_01Make Lord, therefore, these gifts we pray, by sending down your spirit upon them like the dew fall, so that they may become for us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. At the time he was betrayed, and entered willingly into his passion, he took bread, and giving thanks broke it, and gave it to the disciples, saying, Take this, all of you, and eat of it. For this is my body, which will be given up for you. In a similar way, when supper was in the heat took the chalice, and once more giving thanks, he gave it to the disciples, saying, Take this, all of you, and drink from it, for this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me. Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection, we We offer you, Lord, the bread of life and the child of salvation, giving thanks that you've felt us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you. How do we pray that by taking of the body and blood of Christ we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit? Remember, Lord, your church spread throughout the world and bring you to the fullness of charity, together with Leo, our Pope, Francis, our bishop, and all the clergy. Remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection, and all who have died in your mercy, welcome them into the light of your face. Have mercy on us all we pray. That with the blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with the Blessed Joseph, our spouse, of the blessed apostles, and all the saints who please you throughout the ages, we may merit to be co-heres of eternal life, and we praise and glorify you through your Son, Jesus Christ. Through him and with him and in him. O God, Almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours for ever and ever.
SPEAKER_05Amen.
SPEAKER_01At the Savior's command, informed by divine teaching, we dare to say, our Father, who art in heaven, Father be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is as in heaven.
SPEAKER_02Give us this day, our daily prayer. And forgive us our trespasses. As free from the stuff. And with us not in temptation, but deliver us on evil.
SPEAKER_01Deliver us, Lord, we pray from every evil. Gracious you grant peace in our days, that by the help of your mercy, we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress. As we await the blessed hope for the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
SPEAKER_02For the name, the power and the glory of our.
SPEAKER_01The peace of the Lord be with you always.
SPEAKER_02And with your spirit.
SPEAKER_01We pause for a moment, and if somebody is beside you, around you, or not, but someone you want to be at peace with, send them that beautiful gift of peace, especially around the world where it's so much needed. The peace of Christ be with you all. Behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb.
SPEAKER_02Lord I only say the word and I.
SPEAKER_03Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come spiritually into my soul, so that I may unite myself wholly to you now and forever. Amen.
SPEAKER_01The Lord be with you.
SPEAKER_02And with your spirit.
SPEAKER_01Almighty God bless you, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Let us go from this Eucharist in the peace and love of Christ.
SPEAKER_06Thanks. Peace be to God.
SPEAKER_03Our thanks to our donors for the gift of this man.
