Welcome to the celebration of the Daily TV Mass. I'm Father Ernie DeCicha. Televising of this Mass is made possible by the contributions from three donors. My dear brothers and sisters, let's prepare ourselves now to celebrate this Eucharist by giving thanks to our God for all the blessings that we have received. And we also ask the Lord for strength, for mercy, and for peace. You were sent to heal the contrite of heart. Lord have mercy. You came to call sinners. Christ have mercy. You are seated at the right hand of the Father to intercede for us. Lord, have mercy. May Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. Amen. Let us pray. O God, who founded all the commands of your sacred law upon love of you and of our neighbor, grant that by keeping your precepts we may merit to attain eternal life. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever.

Who is a god like you, pardoning iniquity and passing over the transgression of the remnant of your possession? He does not retain his anger forever, because he delights in showing clemency. He will again have compassion upon us. He will tread our iniquities underfoot. You will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea. You will show faithfulness to Jacob and unswerving loyalty to Abraham, as you have sworn to our ancestors from the days of old.

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew. While Jesus was still speaking to the crowds, his mother and his brothers were standing outside, wanting to speak to him. But to the one who had told him this, Jesus replied, Who is my mother and who are my brothers? And pointing to his disciples, he said, Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of my father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother. The gospel of the Lord. Of course, he loved Mother Mary and Saint Joseph. And he loved all his relatives. What Jesus is doing is not rejecting his family, but inviting all of us in to be close to him like a family. Now, having said that, we have to appreciate that not everybody is close to their family. So they might not understand what Jesus is going on here about. For Jesus, obviously, family was meant to be kept close. Jesus was not warring with his mother or with Saint Joseph or with the other relatives. He loved them and he was close to them. Even though some of them probably did not believe in him. But he knew that the crowd, those people who had come to listen to him and were committed to putting his words into practice, they were being like family. What is family to us? You know how many people are not on speaking terms? Parents and children who do not speak to each other. Brothers and sisters who do not speak to each other. All sorts of other relatives as well. And there's a reason for that, I suppose, because people hurt each other, offend each other, break each other's hearts. But that's not what family is supposed to be like, is it? I always tell the little kids, because of course, one of the first sins they commit as they grow up is to fight with their siblings. And they're always quick to tell me that, even in confession. And I tell them, it's okay if you fight with your brothers and sisters, but you still have to love each other because you're family. And hopefully, as the years go on, those fights will stop, and those little brothers and sisters will become very close. Families should be close, and it's sad when they aren't. We do not celebrate broken families. We pray for them. We pray for the gift of healing and reconciliation. And sometimes it might take 45 years to make peace. But that should always be our goal. Because I understand that sometimes it takes 45 years to forgive the hurts that we've had to endure. And it's only when we forgive that we're free. That it stops hurting us. And that we can be truly united as families are called to be united. By the way, you know that we don't choose our families. We're born into them. And they might never be our best friends. Still, there are families. You know, I've been living my priesthood in Toronto most of my life, and I've had my family in Montreal where I was born and raised. It breaks my heart when I see people living in the same city who don't speak to each other, who never want to see each other. Whereas I have to travel all that distance between the two cities to be able to spend a little bit of time with my sisters and with my nieces and with my cousins. Family is a gift. From the beginning of creation, God didn't leave Adam alone in the garden. He gave him Eve. And then he blessed them with children. And the family grew. Oh, and they had their problems from the beginning, because as you know, Cain killed Abel. But that was never God's plan. That's our humanity getting in the way of grace. God's grace. Let's appreciate what family should be, even though it isn't that all the time. And when we understand the beauty of family, then we can appreciate what was going on in the gospel today. Jesus calling us to be his family, to be his mother and brother and sister. In other words, calling us to be close to him. Keep in mind, the Son of God left heaven to make himself close to us. No distance, but intimacy. Jesus made himself close to us. Jesus wants us to be close to him. Like a family. United in faith and in love. In peace, in harmony, in respect. Let's strive to live those values of family with our earthly families, whatever shape they might take. And knowing that we can live in love with our own families, then we can understand how close we can be to Jesus. Jesus who has invited us in to be to him just like Mother Mary and the rest of his relatives. Close, not far away, united, not separated. We thank God for the gift of family. The families we're born into. And in a special way. When the readings are short and my homily short, it always gives me more time for intercessions. So first we pray for all those in our daily TV Mass Prayer Intentions book. We pray to the Lord. In this month of July, as a community prayer, let's give thanks for grandparents and elders like Saints Joachim and Anne, Mother Mary's parents, who nurture faith and family across generations with quiet strength. We pray to the Lord. We continue to pray for peace on earth, especially in those lands torn apart by violence and hatred and division. We pray to the Lord.

For all the sick and suffering, especially for those in hospitals and nursing homes confined to their own homes. For all those in need of God's healing touch, we pray to the Lord. Lord, hear our prayer. For the poor, the hungry, the homeless, the persecuted, the refugees, the prisoners, the unemployed, for all those who have less than we do. And for all victims of injustice, we pray to the Lord.

And his coming in glory we await with unwavering hope. And so with all the angels and saints we praise you, as without end we acclaim.

Therefore, O Lord, as we celebrate the memorial of the saving passion of your Son, his wondrous resurrection and ascension into heaven, and as we look forward to his second coming, we offer you in thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice. Look, we pray upon the oblation of your church, and recognizing the sacrificial victim by whose death you will to reconcile us to yourself. Grant that we, who are nourished by the body and blood of your Son and filled with His Holy Spirit, may become one body, one spirit in Christ. May He make of us an eternal offering to you, so that we may obtain an inheritance with your elect, especially with the most blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with blessed Joseph, her spouse, with your blessed apostles and glorious martyrs. And with all the saints, on whose constant intercession in your presence we rely for unfailing help. May this sacrifice of our reconciliation, we pray, O Lord, advance the peace and salvation of all the world. Be pleased to confirm in faith and charity your pilgrim church on earth, with your servant Leo, our Pope, and Francis, our bishop, the Order of Bishops, all the clergy, and the entire people you have gained for your own. Listen graciously to the prayers of this family whom you have summoned before you. In your compassion, O merciful Father, gather to yourself all your children scattered throughout the world. To our departed brothers and sisters, and to all who are pleasing to you at their passing from this life, give kind admittance to your kingdom. There we hope to enjoy forever the fullness of your glory, through Christ our Lord, through whom you bestow on the world all that is good.
