Welcome to the celebration of the Daily TV Mass. I'm Father Bernard Carroll. Today we will be using alternate readings for the memorial of St. Ignatius of Loyola. The televising of this Mass is made possible by the contribution from a family who are parishioners of St. Clement Parish in Etobicoke, Ontario. This Mass is offered in thanksgiving for blessings received and for world peace. We know that this television mass brings meaning to the lives of tens of thousands of faithful across Canada, the United States, and around the world. And he turned and said to them, Whoever comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, in yes, even life itself, cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not carry the cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not first sit down and estimate the cost to see whether he has enough to complete it? Otherwise, when he has laid the foundation and it is not able to finish, all who see it will begin to ridicule him. This fellow began to build and was not able to finish. Or what king going out to wage a war against another king will not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to oppose the one who comes against him with twenty thousand. If he cannot, then, while the other is still far away, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace. So therefore, none of you can become my disciple if you do not give up all your possessions. The Gospel of the Lord. In this homily, I want to share with you a story. For sixty-seven years I have been a Jesuit, a member of the Society of Jesus, founded by St. Ignatius of Loyola. Like my two younger brothers, I attended Loyola High School in Montreal. In those days, it was common for high school graduates to decide what career they wanted to pursue in life. I was so impressed with the dedication, open-mindedness, and enthusiasm of my Jesuit teachers that I wanted to be like them. So after much prayer and spiritual direction and consideration of other alternatives, I applied to be a Jesuit. Since then, I've often wondered how come I became a Jesuit, but my brothers did not. Then, one day, about 15 years ago, while I was director of the Shrine of the North American Martyrs in Midland, Ontario, I happened to be alone for supper, so I decided to turn on the TV while I ate. What appeared on the screen was Pope Francis celebrating Mass at St. Peter's Square. During his homily on the sacrament of baptism, he paused and asked the crowd assembled in the square, how many of them celebrated their baptism each year? Very few people responded. Then he asked, How many celebrated their birthday? Well the whole crowd cheered enthusiastically. The Pope then urged everyone to celebrate their baptism each year, because it is their birth as children of God and as followers of Christ. So with that urging, I went looking for my baptismal certificate. I had seen it many times before, but I had not focused on the date. I now saw with surprise and even with awe that I was baptized on July the 31st, the feast of St. Ignatius Loyola, a few days after I was born. In the mystery and gift of God's grace and the intercession of saints, plus the prayers of others, the Holy Spirit is at work in every person, whether they are conscious of it or not. I recall in my first experience of the spiritual exercises of Saint Ignatius when I was a novice, I was captivated by the way he himself experienced when he considered how he had passionately desired to do what he wanted to do in his life before his conversion, namely to serve the King of Spain and to win the affection of a noble lady. But when his leg was shattered by a cannonball while defending the citadel of Pamplona, and after surgery he was brought home to recover at Loyola Castle, he wanted to read chivalry and romance novels to pass the time. However, the only books available were the life of Christ and the lives of the saints. These stories transformed his desire from serving his earthly monarch to serving Christ, the eternal king. Now, as with Saint Paul, he wanted to do everything for the glory of God. And as Jesus cautioned those traveling with him, so Ignatius took to heart his words, none of you can become my disciple if you do not give up all your possessions. From then on, his conversion and commitment gradually deepened by trial and error. He left home and spent nine months praying and fasting and doing penance in a cave in Manrisa, Spain. This experience was the foundation for what later became the spiritual exercises. There he understood how the Holy Spirit and other spirits moved in him. Never had having had any formal education other than how to live and behave in the royal court, he realized that if his calling was to serve and follow the example of Christ, he needed to be schooled in the fundamentals of grammar and rhetoric by first learning Latin and then by studying philosophy and theology before he would be permitted by church authorities to teach and offer the spiritual exercises to others. While studying at the University of Paris, he became a friend of Francis Xavier and other students with whom he shared the spiritual exercises. These young men were so transformed by that experience that they chose to remain companions with Ignatius in leading others to know and experience the never-ending love of God and to find God's presence in all things. With Ignatius, they became the founders of the Society of Jesus. Down through the four and a half centuries since that time, the Ignatian's spiritual exercises and his method of discernment have changed the lives of countless men and women, saints and sinners, clergy and laity in every part of the world. And so it is that the church, the people of God, gives thanks for and praise through the intercession of Saint Ignatius Lovelo this day. Let us now bring before God and before one another the prayers that the Holy Spirit stirs in our hearts. For the Church and for all who witness to Christ in the face of rejection, ridicule, and danger, we pray to the Lord. For Jesuits throughout the world who are ministering to refugees and the poor, that they may remain strong in hope, faith, and love, we pray to the Lord.

And so, with the company of angels and saints, we sing the hymn of your praise as without end we acclaim.

Look, we pray, upon the ablation of your church, and recognizing the sacrificial victim by whose death you will to reconcile us to yourself, grant that we, who are nourished by the body and blood of your Son and filled with his Holy Spirit, may become one body, one spirit in Christ. May He make of us an eternal offering to you, so that we may obtain an inheritance with your elect, especially with the most blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with Blessed Joseph, her spouse, with Saint Ignatius and all the saints, and with on whose constant intercession we rely in your for your on we rely for unfailing help. May the sacrifice of our reconciliation, we pray, O God, advance the peace and salvation of all the world. Be pleased to confirm in faith and charity your pilgrim church on earth, with your servant, our Pope Leo and Francis, our bishop, the order of bishops, all the clergy, and the entire people you have gained for your own. Listen graciously to the prayers of this family whom you have summoned before you. In your compassion, O merciful Father, gather to yourself all your children, scattered throughout the world. To our departed brothers and sisters, and to all who were pleasing to you at their passing from this life, give kind admittance to your kingdom. There we hope to enjoy forever the fullness of your glory, through Christ our Lord, through whom you bestow on the world all that is good.
