SPEAKER_03Welcome to the celebration of the Sunday TV Mass on this, the 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time. I'm Father Ernie DeCicha. The televising of this Mass is made possible by the contributions from two donors. The first is Valerie from Calgary, Alberta, in memory of her parents, Victor and Mary, for her living and deceased family members, the souls in purgatory, in thanksgiving for her health and for blessings received, and for the broadcast of the masses and all of those involved. The second is Dorothy Sutton and family from Sherwood Park, Alberta, in loving memory of Darrell, husband, father, and grandfather on the eighth anniversary of his death. SPEAKER_03Lord Jesus, you forgive us our sins. Christ have mercy. Lord Jesus, you feed us with your body and blood. Lord have mercy. May Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. Glory to God in the highest, and on earth, peace to people of goodwill. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, Heavenly King, O God Almighty Father, Lord Jesus Christ, only begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. You take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. You are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us, for you alone are the Holy One. You alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. Let us pray. Draw near to your servants, O Lord, and answer their prayers with unceasing kindness, that for those who glory in you as their creator and guide, you may restore what you have created and keep safe what you have restored. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, forever and ever.
SPEAKER_01A reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah. Thus says the Lord, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters, and you that have no money, come, buy and eat. Come, buy wine and milk, without money and without price. Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Listen carefully to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food. Incline your ear and come to me. Listen so that you may live. I will make with you an everlasting covenant with my steadfast, sure love for David. The word of the Lord. Will hardship or distress or persecution or famine or nakedness or peril or sword? No. In all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. The word of the Lord.

SPEAKER_03A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew. When Jesus heard that Herod had beheaded John the Baptist, he withdrew in a boat to a deserted place by himself. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns. When he went ashore, Jesus saw a great crowd, and he had compassion for them and cured their sick. When it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, This is a deserted place, and the hour is now late. Send the crowds away so that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves. Jesus said to them, They need not go away. You give them something to eat. They replied, We have nothing here but five loaves and two fish. And he said, Bring them here to me. Then Jesus ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and blessed, and broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples. And the disciples gave them to the crowds. And all ate and were filled. And they took up what was left over of the broken pieces, twelve baskets full. And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children. The gospel of the Lord. I think I hit the jackpot today with our readings. Such beautiful passages from Scripture that we have for this 18th Sunday in ordinary time. The first reading from Isaiah: everyone who thirsts, come to the waters. It's actually one of the readings that we use at the Easter Vigil because people are being baptized and they're thirsty. And of course, what they need is not the water from the tap, but the waters of baptism that give them life. But again, they talk about how it's God who satisfies our thirst. Even the responsorial psalm, you open your hand to feed us, Lord, and satisfy our needs. So many people are hungry, and I don't just mean for the food that goes into our stomach, but we're hungry for love. We're hungry for peace. We're hungry for meaning in our lives. And again, we turn to God, who feeds us and who satisfies our every need. The second reading from Romans is not connected to the other readings, but again, one of the most beautiful passages from Scripture that's often read at funeral masses. Nothing, not even death, will separate us from the love of Christ. Romans chapter 8. Read it when you have time. And then I get this gorgeous gospel reading from the 14th chapter of Matthew's gospel, the feeding of the 5,000 with five loaves and two fish. A great miracle of Jesus. And like all his miracles, they reveal to us that this is the Son of God, not just some carpenter from Nazareth. Who else could have the power to perform such signs? And the signs that Jesus did were never to bring attention to himself, but to lead people to faith. And no doubt, in seeing this miracle, people were able to say, This is the Son of God. I want to follow him. This miracle in particular, of course, shows how Jesus always has compassion for the people. We're told that when he came out of the boat and he saw the crowds already waiting for him, he had compassion for them. So he cured their sick. He tended to their needs, spiritual and physical, because again, they were hungry to hear the word of God. They were hungry for healing of their broken bodies and broken hearts. And at the end of the day, they were hungry for food. And again, Jesus comes to the rescue. The disciples are ready to send them to the villages. Go buy your own food. Jesus reminds us that we have a responsibility to each other. We don't just send people away. We feed them. And the words of Jesus are important because he says, you give them something to eat. Yeah. Oh, he could have made bread and fish come down from heaven. He's God's son. He had the power. You give them something to eat. In other words, it's not just Christ's responsibility, it's a shared responsibility that we all have for our brothers and sisters who are hungry, who are in need, who are thirsty. Jesus does everything already. He satisfies people's thirst and hunger. But Jesus has called us, his disciples, to work with them, to collaborate with them, to be his hands and his mouth in our own day and age. What have we done to feed people? With the Word of God. Do we share our faith, our beautiful faith with them? And if they have physical needs, if they're suffering in some way, do we tend to them? Do we show compassion as Jesus showed compassion always and everywhere? Two thousand years ago, the Lord Jesus worked this great miracle. We don't have that power. But in our own way, we continue the work of Jesus Christ. We bring his word to hungry hearts. We bring his healing to broken hearts. And even when people have physical needs, we can lend a helping hand. So let us not just be spectators in the crowd and expect Jesus to do it all for us. You give them something to eat, are the words of Jesus to his apostles 2,000 years ago. And that he gives to us in our own day and age. Together now, let's make our profession of faith. I believe in God the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again from the dead, he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting. Amen. SPEAKER_03We pray in this month of August that Mary's assumption renews our hope of one day sharing eternal life with her and her son, Jesus Christ. We pray to the Lord. For peace on earth, for justice in all lands, for all the sick and suffering, and for our loved ones who have died. We pray to the Lord. Loving God, we ask you to hear and answer us in our need, for we pray through Christ our Lord.

SPEAKER_03Graciously sanctify these gifts, O Lord, we pray, and accepting the oblation of this spiritual sacrifice, make of us an eternal offering to you through Christ our Lord.

SPEAKER_03The Lord be with you. Lift up your hearts. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks. Lord, Holy Father, Almighty, and Eternal God, for we know it belongs to your boundless glory that you came to the aid of mortal beings with your divinity, and even fashioned for us a remedy out of mortality itself, that the cause of our downfall might become the means of our salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him the host of angels adores your majesty and rejoices in your presence forever. May our voices we pray join with theirs in one chorus of exultant praise as we acclaim.
SPEAKER_04Holy Holy Holly God of house of an earth full of your glory.
SPEAKER_03At the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion, he took bread and giving thanks broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this, all of you, and eat of it, for this is my body which will be given up for you. In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took the chalice, and once more giving thanks, he gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this, all of you, and drink from it, for this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me.
SPEAKER_04When we heat this breath and drink this car, we proclaim your death of Lord until you come up.
SPEAKER_03Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection, we offer you, Lord, the bread of life and the chalice of salvation, giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you. Humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of Christ we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit. Remember, Lord, your church spread throughout the world, and bring her to the fullness of charity, together with Leo, our Pope, and Francis, our bishop, and all the clergy. Remember also our brothers and sisters, who have fallen asleep and the hope of the resurrection, and all who have died in your mercy. Welcome them into the light of your face. Have mercy on us all, we pray, that with the blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with blessed Joseph, her spouse, with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages, we may merit to be co-heirs to eternal life, and may praise and glorify you through your Son, Jesus Christ.
SPEAKER_02Through him and with him and in him, O God Almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours forever and ever.
SPEAKER_03Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil. Graciously grant peace in our days, that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Lord Jesus Christ, who said to apostles, peace I leave you, my peace I give you. Look not on our sins, but on the faith of your church, and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will, who live and reign forever and ever. The peace of the Lord be with you always. Let us offer each other the sign of peace.

SPEAKER_00My Jesus, I believe that you are present in this holy sacrament of the altar. I love you above all things, and I passionately desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come spiritually into my soul, so that I may unite myself wholly to you now and forever. Amen.
SPEAKER_03Let us pray. Accompany with constant protection, O Lord, those you renew with these heavenly gifts, and in your never-failing care for them, make them worthy of eternal redemption through Christ our Lord. The Lord be with you, and with your spirit. May Almighty God bless you, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.
