SPEAKER_00A reading from the book of the prophet Jeremiah. At the beginning of the reign of King Zedekiah of Judah, in the fifth month of the fourth year, the prophet Hananiah, son of Azar from Gibeon, spoke to me in the house of the Lord, in the presence of the priests and all the people, saying, Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, I have broken the yoke of the King of Babylon. Within two years I will bring back to this place all the vessels of the Lord's house, which King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon took away from this place and carried to Babylon. I will also bring back to this place King Jeconiah and son Jehouchim of Judah. And all the exiles from Judah who went to Babylon, says the Lord, for I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon. Then the prophet Jeremiah spoke to the prophet Hananiah in the presence of the priests and all the people who were standing in the house of the Lord. And the prophet Jeremiah said, Amen. May the Lord do so. May the Lord fulfill the words that you have prophesied, and bring back to this place from Babylon the vessels of the house of the Lord and all the exiles. But listen now to this word that I speak in your hearing and in the hearing of all the people. The prophets who precede you and from me, ancient times, prophesied war, famine, and pestilence against my countries and great kingdoms. As for the prophets who prophecies peace, when the word of that prophet comes true, then it will be known that the Lord has truly sent the prophet. Then the prophet Hananiah took the yoke from the neck of the prophet Jeremiah and broke it. And Hananiah spoke in the presence of all the people, saying, Thus says the Lord, this is how I will break the yoke of King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon from the neck of all the nations within two years. At this the prophet Jeremiah went his way. Some time after the prophet Hananiah had broke the yoke from the neck of the prophet Jeremiah, the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah. Go tell Hananiah, thus says the Lord, you have broken wooden bars, only to forge iron bars in place of them. For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, I have put an iron yoke on the neck of all these nations, so that they may serve King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, and they shall indeed serve him. I have even given him the wild animals. And the prophet Jeremiah said to the prophet Hananiah, Listen, Hananiah, the Lord has not sent you, and you made this people trust in a lie. Therefore, thus says the Lord, I am going to send you off the face of the earth. Within this year you will be dead, because you have spoken rebellion against the Lord. In that same year, in the seven month, the prophet Hananiah died. The word of the Lord.

SPEAKER_04Teach me your laws, O Lord. Put false ways far from me, and graciously teach me your law. Do not take the word of truth utterly out of my mouth, for my hope is in your ordinance. Teach me your lust, oh Lord. Let those to fear you turn to me, so that they may know your decrees. May my heart be blameless in your statute, so that I may not be put to shame. Teach me your laws, old Lord. The wicked lion wait to destroy me, but I consider your decrees. I do not turn away from your ordinance, for you have taught me. Teach me your laws.
SPEAKER_03A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew. After the crowd had eaten enough, Jesus made the disciples get into a boat and go on ahead to the other side. Well he dismissed the crowds. And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came he was there alone. But by this time the boat, battered by the waves, was far from the land, for the wind was against them. And early in the morning Jesus came walking toward them on the sea. But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, saying, It is a ghost. And they cried out in fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them and said, Take heart, it is I, do not be afraid. Peter answered him, Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water. Jesus said, Come. So Peter got out of the boat, started walking on the water, and came toward Jesus. But when he noticed the strong wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, Lord, save me. Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, You of little faith, why did you doubt? When they got into the boat the wind ceased, and those in the boat worshipped him, saying, Truly you are the Son of God. When they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret. After the people of that land of that place recognized him, they sent word throughout the region, and brought all who were sick to him, and begged him that they might touch even the fringe of his cloak, and all who touched it were healed. The Gospel of the Lord. I don't think it a mere coincidence that today's gospel immediately follows a Eucharistic passage, namely the multiplication of the loaves. The multiplication of the loaves shows us that Jesus loves us and that Jesus wants to satisfy our hunger. And not only our physical hunger, but also our hunger for truth, for goodness, and for beauty, for the transcendentals. And it's by means of the Eucharist that Jesus satisfies our deepest hunger, especially that for union with the one who created, redeemed, and sanctifies us. So what can today's gospel, a passage about Jesus walking on the water, reveal to us about the most holy Eucharist? Well, I think that verse 24 in today's gospel describes well a life lived without the Eucharist. The disciples are without Jesus. They are surrounded by darkness in the midst of a wind-tossed sea. And our lives too would be very dark without the Eucharist. For it's through the Eucharist that the light of Jesus penetrates into and illuminates the dark depths of our being. It's preeminently through the Eucharist that Jesus shines his light into our fallen world. And that's why Padre Pio could say, without the slightest hint of exaggeration, that the earth could exist more easily without the sun than without the holy sacrifice of the Mass. Well, it's said of Padre Pio that he had such a profound appreciation for the Mass that he would often shed tears of love and sorrow while he was celebrating it. And it would take very long for him to even get through the celebration of one Mass. This was a priest who truly understood what was happening on the altar and who was being made sacramentally present on the altar by the power of the Holy Spirit. The boat battered by the waves was far from the land, for the wind was against the disciples. How stormy the sea of our own lives would be without the Eucharist. We would be tossed to and fro by the waves of temptation and suffering that we experience daily in this fallen world. It's through the Eucharist that Jesus is able to calm the sea within us and all around us. Being in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament, receiving Holy Communion. These practices give us the strength to withstand the waves that buffet us from all sides. The most blessed sacrament of the altar, in a word, protects us from spiritual shipwreck. It's said of another saint, St. Dominic Savio, that he loved above all else to be in Jesus' Eucharistic presence. Dominic would often become so absorbed in prayer before the tabernacle that he would lose all track of time and he would pray right through breakfast and class. Well, one day the director of the boarding school went looking for Dominic, and Dominic hadn't been seen all that day by his teachers or his classmates. And so he thought that he would go check in the chapel. And when he went to look there, he found Dominic by the sanctuary, standing as motionless as a statue, his eyes fixed on the tabernacle. But when his director called out to him, Dominic didn't reply at first. So his director shook him gently by the shoulders, prompting Dominic to emerge from his trance. And as Dominic regained his senses, he turned to his director and asked, Oh, is the Mass over? To which the director replied, Dominic, it's two o'clock in the afternoon. So that meant that the Mass had ended about five hours prior. Such was Dominic's love for Jesus in the Eucharist. And early in the morning Jesus came walking toward the disciples on the sea, saying to them, Take heart, it is I, do not be afraid. Well, just as Jesus drew near to the disciples' boat on the Sea of Galilee, so does he draw near to us in the Most Holy Eucharist. So we welcome him into our hearts, that he may guide us safely across the wind toss sea of this world and to the peaceful shore of our heavenly homeland. Let us bring our prayers to God who created the earth and its fullness. For the Holy Catholic Church, as it continues to speak out against all that would destroy human dignity, human rights, and human life, we thank you, Lord. Let us pray to the Lord. For those whose lives are plagued by doubt and despair, that they may have God's grace to help them. Let us pray to the Lord.

SPEAKER_03We pray this month that Mary's assumption renews our hope of one day sharing eternal life with her and her son. We pray to the Lord. God of heaven and earth, you reward those with clean hands and pure hearts. In our unworthiness, we bring our prayers to you through Christ our Lord. It will become for us the bread of life. By the mystery of this water and wine, may we come to share in the divinity of Christ. Who humble themselves to share in our humanity? Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for through your goodness we have received the wine we offer you, fruit of the vine and work of human hands. It will become our spiritual drink. Wash me, O Lord, from my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. Pray, brothers and sisters, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God the Almighty Father. Graciously sanctify these gifts, O Lord, we pray, and accepting the oblation of this spiritual sacrifice, make of us an eternal offering to you through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Lord be with you.

SPEAKER_03Lift up your hearts. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right and just it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks. Lord Holy Father, Almighty and Eternal God, through Christ our Lord. In him you have been pleased to renew all things, giving us all a share in his fullness. For though he was in the form of God, he emptied himself, and by the blood of his cross brought peace to all creation. Therefore he has been exalted above all things, and to all who obey him, has become the source of eternal salvation. And so with angels and archangels, with thrones and dominions, and with all the hosts and powers of heaven, we sing the hymn of your glory as without end we acclaim.

SPEAKER_03O Lord, the fount of all holiness. Make holy therefore these gifts we pray, by sending down your spirit upon them like the dew fall, so that they may become for us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. At the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion, he took bread, and giving thanks broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this all of you, and eat of it, for this is my body which will be given up for you. In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took the chalice, and once more giving thanks, he gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this, all of you, and drink from it, for this is the chalice of my blood. The blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me. The mystery of faith.
SPEAKER_04When we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim your death, O Lord, until you come again.
SPEAKER_03Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection, we offer you, Lord, the bread of life and the chalice of salvation, giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you. Humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of Christ, we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit. Remember, Lord, your church spread throughout the world, and bring her to the fullness of charity, together with Leo our Pope and Francis, our bishop, and all the clergy. Remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection, and all who have died in your mercy. Welcome them into the light of your face. Have mercy on us all we pray, that with the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with Blessed Joseph her spouse, with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages, we may merit to be co-heirs to eternal life, and may praise and glorify you through your Son, Jesus Christ. Through him and with him and in him, O God Almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours forever and ever. At the Savior's command, informed by divine teaching, we dare to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil. Graciously grant peace in our days, that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior Jesus Christ.

SPEAKER_05Please join me now in this act of spiritual communion. My Jesus, I believe that you are present in this holy sacrament of the altar. I love you above all things, and I passionately desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come spiritually into my soul, so that I may unite myself wholly to you now and forever. Amen.
SPEAKER_03Let us pray. Accompany with constant protection, O Lord, those you renew with these heavenly gifts, and in your never failing care for them, make them worthy of eternal redemption through Christ our Lord.
