Welcome to the celebration of the Daily TV Mass. I'm Father John Verteo. The television of this Mass is made possible by the contribution from three donors. The first is an anonymous donor from Scarborough, Ontario, for mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual health and healing for herself, her daughter, her son and daughter, their spouses, and her grandchildren. Also for peace, happiness, good health, divine protection, continued blessings for herself and her family, and for stability in their employment and peace within their work environments. Almighty and merciful God, graciously keep from us all adversity, so that unhindered in mind and body alike, we may pursue in freedom of heart the things that are yours. Jesus went to the district of Tyran Sidon, and the Canaanite woman from that region came out and started shouting, Have mercy on me, Lord, son of David. My daughter is tormented by a demon. But Jesus did not answer her at all. And his disciples came and urged him, saying, Send her away, for she keeps shouting after us. He answered, I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. But she came and knelt before him, saying, Lord, help me. Jesus answered, It is not fair to take the children's food and give it to the dogs. She said, Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from the master's table. Then Jesus answered her, Woman, great is your faith. Let it be done for you as you wish. And her daughter was healed instantly. The gospel of the Lord.

Let me just maybe very quickly recap in the very, very short way the reflection on today's gospel. To put us sort of in the frame of mind of the gospel account and hopefully to help you with a wider view of what took place 2,000 years ago. A Canaanite woman asks Jesus to have pity on her. Her daughter is tormented by a demon. Her daughter's pain is torture to her as a loving mother. Jesus doesn't answer at first when, and when he does, it's not the response that she wants. In delaying his healing, he helped the mother realize her faith. That's sort of in a nutshell. You see, friends, this passage describes the only occasion in which Jesus ministered to outside of Jewish territory. As you might know, Tyran and Sidon were about 50 miles north of Israel and still exist today in modern Lebanon. A Gentile woman, a foreigner who was not a member of the Jewish people, puts Jesus on the spot by pleading for his help. At first, Jesus seemed to pay no attention to her, and this made the disciples feel embarrassed. After all, he was helping so many people, so why not help her? Jesus does not do this to test the woman and awaken the faith in her. For the Greeks, the dog was a symbol of dishonor and was used to describe a shameless and auditious woman. This is another reference to dogs, or there is another reference to dogs in Matthew's gospel, where Jesus says to his disciples, Do not give to dogs what is holy. Jesus tests this woman's faith, so if she is sincere in receiving holy things from the hand of God, because it's so special. The happy ending is that Jesus praises the Gentile woman for her faith and for her love. She made the misery of her child her own, and she was willing to suffer refusal in order to obtain healing for the daughter she loved so much. She also had strong persistence. Her faith grew in constant with the person of Jesus. She began with a request and she ended her on her knees in the worshipful praise of the living God. So then she realized Jesus is the Son of God. No one who ever saw Jesus with earnest faith, whether Jew or Gentile, was ever refused his help. That includes us too, even today. So do you seek the Lord Jesus with expected faith? Short story. Some years ago I was having coffee with a friend, and a lady who I saw at Mass on a regular basis came over to say what I thought was a very quick, simple hello. She approached and apologized for interrupting. She had been trying to get my attention outside the church, and this was an ideal opportunity for her to do so. The friend who I was with also was not a Catholic, suggested I tell her that uh it's my day off. I suggested she sit with us on my day off. In brief, she explained that she was married to a non-Catholic who sometimes comes to Mass with her, but not often. She told him that he was not allowed to receive Holy Communion. He was not very happy at first, and said some very nasty things about the Catholic Church. She was very hurt, yet at the same time, she loved him very, very much as he was a very good man, but not Catholic, although the two of them did pray together on a regular basis. Her question was, What will happen to his soul when he dies? And do not do only Catholics go to heaven? This was her question. My suggestion was that God loves everybody, including her husband as well, no matter what. She was so happy to hear that God loves all of us, including her non-Catholic husband. I suggested that she take time to explain the Mass to her husband and the other sacraments that we celebrate in the Catholic Church, in the Catholic faith. She agreed, and after spending time in prayer as well as looking up various sources on the sacramental life, so as to educate herself first before she talked to him about it, she then explained everything to him, and he, and from what I hear, understood and was happy to understand that and learn about it. You see, his attitude changed. The next step was to embrace the Catholic faith, and the rest is history. The lady left. I could tell that my friend, after witnessing what had taken place, had many, many questions for me. The first one was, How can God love everyone? Does he not does he does that include me as well? I'm not a Catholic either. I smiled and I said, Yes, even you. So let me close with a prayer. Lord Jesus. Your love and mercy knows no bounds. May I trust always and pursue you with determined persistence as this woman did. Increase my faith in your saving power and deliver me and my loved ones from all evil and harm. Amen. And we close in asking our blessed Mother to bless each one of us and heal us of our iniquities. And we pray, Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our dead. Amen. Our Lady of Grace, pray for us. Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for if you will receive the bread we offer you, fruit of the earth, and work of human hands, it will become for us the bread of life. Blessed be God forever. Through the mystery of this water and wine, may we come to share in the divinity of Christ, who humble Himself to share in our humanity. Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for if you're going to receive the wine we offer you, fruit of the vine and work of human hands, it will become our spiritual drink. Blessed be thy forever. Lord, wash my iniquity and cleanse me from my sins. Pray, brothers and sisters, that my sacrifice and yours be acceptable to God, the Almighty Father. May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands. Praise the Lord His name. Furthermore, His name is your church. Look with favor, we pray, O Lord, upon the sacrificial gifts offered here, that celebrating the mystery of the Passion of Your Son, we may honor it with loving devotion through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. Lift up your hearts. Lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is truly right and just our duty and our salvation, always in every word to give you thanks, Lord, Holy Father, Almighty Eternal God. For just as through your beloved Son you created the human race, so also through him with great goodness you formed it in you. And so it is right that all your creatures serve you. All the redeem praise you, and all your saints with one heart bless you. Therefore we too exalt you with all the angels, as in joyful celebration we acclaim.

Have mercy on us all, we pray that with the blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with the Blessed Joseph, our spouse, with the Blessed Apostles, and all the saints who pleases throughout the ages, we may merry to be co-heres to eternal life, and we praise and glorify you through your Son, Jesus Christ. Through him and with him and in him. O God, Almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours for ever and ever.

At the Savior's command, and formed by divine teaching, we're there to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, your brave from every evil. Gracious to grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your apostles, peace I leave you, my peace I give you. Look not on our sins, but on the faith of your church. And grace you are with peace and unity and accordance with your will who live and reign forever and ever.
