Welcome to the celebration of the Sunday TV Mass on the 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time. I'm Father Chris Lemieux. The televising of this Mass is made possible by the contribution from three donors. The first is the Langevin de Rocher family from Ontario. In loving memory of Diane, may her soul rest in eternal peace, in thanksgiving for blessings received and for the living and deceased members of the families. The second is Dr. David Brown from Spartanburg, South Carolina, in memory of his wife, Mary Grace Brown, who died in March 2022, in honor of the Daily TV Mass Priests, especially Father Hank and Monsignor Sam Bianco, and for all seniors, widows, and widowers. A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Romans. Brothers and sisters, I am speaking the truth in Christ, and I am not lying. My conscience confirms it by the Holy Spirit. I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart, for I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my own people, my kindred according to the flesh. They are children of Israel, and to them belong the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises. Immediately after feeding the crowds with the five loaves and two fish, Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side, will he dismiss the crowds? And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up to the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone. But by this time the boat, battered by the waves, was far from the land, for the wind was against them. And early in the morning Jesus came walking toward them on the sea. But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, saying, It is a ghost. And they cried out in fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them and said, Take heart, it is I. Do not be afraid. Peter answered him, Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water. Jesus said, Come. So Peter got out of the boat, started walking on the water, and came toward Jesus. But when he noticed the strong wind, he became frightened and began to sink. He cried out, Lord, save me. Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, You of little faith, why did you doubt? When they got into the boat, the wind ceased, and those in the boat worshipped him, saying, Truly, you are the Son of God. The gospel of the Lord. One of the truths of our Christian faith, but also something that most of us struggle with, is that God never abandons his people, even in our darkest hour. In our gospel today, we find the disciples alone in their boat, being battered and tossed about by the strong waves around them. Several of them are experienced fishermen, and yet they have no control over what was happening around them and to them. It's at their absolute wit's end, the darkest part of the night, that Jesus comes to them, walking across the water. How often life feels like that for us? Most of us encounter storms we never expected, illnesses, grief, and loss, intense loneliness, great uncertainty in our life. There are days when we wonder where God is or why he seems so quiet. And yet we're reminded that Jesus never takes his eyes off his disciples, even while they couldn't see him. He saw them. And at exactly the right moment, he came to them. Take courage, it's me. Don't be afraid. Those words aren't only for the disciples on the Sea of Galilee, they're for each one of us as well. And then Peter steps out of the boat and for a moment, a remarkable moment, actually walks on water with Jesus. Only when he shifts his attention from Jesus to what's all around him, what's going on around him, does fear then overwhelm him and he starts to sink. And isn't that often our experience too? When we focus on our problems, they can seem larger than life to us. But when we keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, we discover that he's greater than any storm that we face. And even when Peter begins to sink, Jesus doesn't scold him, he stretches out his hand and he catches him. That's the heart of the gospel. Our hope doesn't rest on having perfect faith, it rests on a perfect Savior who never lets go of those who cry out to him. Our first reading today echoes that same message. Elijah expects to find God in the wind and the earthquake in the fire. Instead, God comes in the sound of a gentle whisper. And often the Lord works that way, works quietly. His presence may not remove every difficulty, but it brings the peace and strength that we need to face the difficulties in our life. So, what is one practical way that maybe we can live this out, this gospel out this week? Whenever we begin to feel anxious or discouraged, maybe we pause for a moment and pray the simple prayer that Peter prayed. Lord, save me. It's one of the shortest prayers in the Bible, but it's also one of the most powerful. Pray it when you wake in the night. Pray it before a medical appointment. Pray it when you receive difficult news. Pray it when you feel alone. Lord, save me. And trust that the same hand which reach out to Peter is reaching out to you. Friends, the storms of life will come and they'll go. But God remains the Lord of everything. Jesus offers us his words of hope. Take courage. It's me. Don't be afraid. If we keep turning our hearts towards him, we will discover that he has been walking beside us all along. And friends, let us now join together as we pray the Apostles' Creed. I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell.
