SPEAKER_02Friends, as we begin our celebration of the Holy Eucharist, we call to mind our sins and ask God for his continued mercy and love. You were sent to heal the contrite of heart. Lord have mercy.

SPEAKER_02You came to call sinners. Christ have mercy. You are seated at the right hand of the Father to intercede for us. Lord, have mercy.

SPEAKER_01A reading from the book of the Prophet Ezekiel. The word of the Lord came to me. Mortal, you are living in the midst of a rebellious house, who have eyes to see but do not see, who have ears to hear, but do not hear, for they are a rebellious house. Therefore, mortal, prepare for yourself an exile's baggage, and go into exile by day in their sight. You shall go like an exile from your place to another place in their sight. Perhaps they will understand, though they are a rebellious house. You shall bring out your baggage by day in their sight, as baggage for exile, and you shall go out yourself at evening in their sight, as those do who go into exile. Dig through the wall in their sight, and carry the baggage through it. In their sight you shall lift the baggage on your shoulder, and carry it out in the dark. You shall cover your face so that you may not see the land, for I have made you a sign for the house of Israel. I did just as I was commanded. I brought out my baggage by day, as baggage for exile, and even in the evening I dug through the wall with my own hands. I brought it out in the dark, carrying it on my shoulder in their sight. In the morning the word of the Lord came to me, Mortal, has not the house of Israel, the rebellious house, said to you, What are you doing? Say to them, Thus says the Lord God, this oracle concerns the prince in Jerusalem, and all the house of Israel in it. Say, I am assigned for you, as I have done, so shall it be done to them. They shall go into exile, into captivity. And the prince who is among them shall lift his baggage on his shoulder in the dark, and shall go out. He shall dig through the wall and carry it through, he shall cover his face, so that he may not see the land with his eyes. I will spread my net over him, and he shall be caught in my snare, and I will bring him to Babylon, the land of the Chaldeans, yet he shall not see it, and he shall die there. I will scatter to every wind all who are around him, his helpers, and all his troops, and I will unsheathe the sword behind them, and they shall know that I am the Lord, when I disperse them among the nations and scatter them through the countries. But I will let a few of them escape from the sword, from famine and pestilence, so that they may tell of all their abominations among the nations where they go, then they shall know that I am the Lord, the word of the Lord.

SPEAKER_00A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew. Peter came to Jesus and said, Lord, if a brother or sister sins against me, how often would I forgive? As many as seven times. And Jesus said to Peter, Not seven times, but I tell you, seventy-seven times. For this reason the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his slaves. When he began the reckoning, one who owed him ten thousand talents was brought to him. And as he could not pay, his Lord ordered him to be sold, together with his wife and children and all his possessions, and payment to be made. So the slave fell to his knees before him, saying, Have patience with me, and I will pay you everything. And out of pity for him, the lord of that slave released him and forgave him his debt. But that same slave, as he went out, came upon one of his fellows fellow slaves, who owned owed him a hundred denarii, and seizing him by the throat, he said, Pay what you owe. Then his fellow slave fell down and pleaded with him, have patience with me, and I will pay you. But he refused. Then he went and he threw him into prison until he would be able to pay the debt. When his fellow slaves saw what had happened, they were generate greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their Lord all that had taken place. Then his Lord summoned him and said to him, You wicked slave, I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me. Should you not have had mercy on your fellow slave as I had mercy on you? And in anger his Lord handed him over to be tortured until he would pay his entire debt. So my heavenly Father will also do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother and sister from your heart. And when Jesus had finished saying these things, he left Galilee and went to the region of Judea beyond the Jordan. The Gospel of the Lord. Well, today in our gospel we have perhaps one of the most difficult teachings of Jesus, and it's actually a teaching that is throughout his entire ministry, and it has to do with forgiveness. I was struck from a line from Ezekiel in the very first reading when he says, prepare for yourself an exile's baggage, this imagery of baggage. And if you think about it, we all carry baggage in our lives, some of it hidden baggage, old hurts, broken relationships, resentments, disappointments, and even guilt, sometimes heavy guilt, for those things that God has already forgiven. And as we go through life, these burdens become very heavy. And that is one of the contexts of today's story. So Peter, as Peter so often does, he comes in and he asks Jesus this question, thinking he already knows the answer. And he says, Lord, if my brother or sister sins against me, how often should I forgive? As many as seven times. You see, rabbis at the time often touch that you should forgive three times. So Peter thought, I'll double that and I'll add one, and Jesus will be very impressed with my answer. But Jesus surprises not only Peter, but everyone who's listening when he says, No, not seven times, but seventy-seven times. The number is actually irrelevant because what Jesus is teaching us when it comes to forgiveness, simply stop counting. See, forgiveness is the very language of Jesus' ministry. Look at the stories. He teaches us the Lord's Prayer, the prodigal son, the woman caught in adultery, the good shepherd, where he goes out looking for that one lost sheep. And then what I think is the most powerful teaching on forgiveness in all of the New Testament takes place when Jesus is slammed into the ground on the cross after having been tortured both physically and mentally by those around him. And he looks up to his father, and what does he say? You know what he says. Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do. One of my favorite writers on this particular subject is the late Dr. David Stoop. He is a Christian psychologist and he wrote about forgiveness. The book that I really liked was called Forgiving the Unforgivable. It's since been retitled to this, Forgiving What We'll Never Forget. And here's a quote from Dr. Stoop. Forgiving other people does not in any way benefit or let them off the hook. We are the ones who are freed from the expectation of restitution for the wrongs done to us. Forgiveness sets us free. We stop carrying that excess baggage that just weighs us down. And in his book, he actually talks about three possible paths you can take when someone has hurt you, especially hurt you deeply. Remember, forgiving what is unforgivable. He says there's three choices we can make. The first is denial. That is, we deny that we've even been hurt, or worse, we blame ourselves. We shut down emotionally, we can become depressed. Then there's the path of bitterness. This is where we obsess over the offense, seek payment and revenge, and in the end, we ourselves become bitter and we withdraw. And then there's the path of forgiveness. This is where we place the blame appropriately, and something that I never heard anybody else talk about. He says, we grieve the loss, grieving something that has been done to us, then we choose to forgive, as Jesus says, from our heart, and we consider reconciliation, but we have to learn to trust again. And he makes an extremely important distinction. Forgiveness does not equal reconciliation. Forgiveness involves one person, it involves me, involves you. My decision, made with the grace of God, where reconciliation always requires or involves another person. It requires repentance on that person's part, honesty, we need to rebuild trust. And you know, reconciliation is not always possible. And it's not always wise. There is no command to enter into a recurring toxic relationship with someone. Healthy boundaries may be necessary. And we see that in the New Testament, the difference between Peter and Judas. Peter hurts Jesus deeply when he denies him three times, but he comes back and he asks for mercy, and he has granted that on the shore at the resurrection. When Jesus says, Peter, do you love me three times? Peter says, Yes, I do. Go feed my sheep. But Judas does not do that. He betrays Jesus. He becomes overcome with regret and he never returns and asks for mercy. And he ends up killing himself. You know, in a few moments' time, I'm going to invite you to go in peace. And I'm going to ask you to go about your day, to think about one simple question. What baggage is Jesus asking me to leave behind today? Is it someone I need to forgive? Is it someone that I need to ask for forgiveness from? And then leave that baggage at the foot of the cross. Carry instead the peace that comes from praying and living, the words that we are all going to say here in just one minute. Father, forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who have trespassed against us. And then we can truly go in peace, glorifying the Lord by our lives, not weighed down by yesterday's baggage, but set free by the limitless mercy of God. Amen. I invite you now to join us in our prayers of the faithful. For all those listening in the Daily TV Mass Prayer Intentions book, that those who carry baggage of past hurts, broken relationships, or family divisions may experience Christ's healing, find the grace to forgive, and seek forgiveness, and know the peace that only God can give. We pray to the Lord. And we pray this month that Mary's assumption renews our hope of one day sharing eternal life with her son. We pray to the Lord.

It is right and just truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks, Lord, Holy Father, Almighty, and Eternal God. For just as through your beloved Son you created the human race, so also through him with great goodness you formed it anew. And so it's right that all your creatures serve you, all the redeemed praise you, and all your saints with one heart bless you. Therefore we too extol you with all the angels, as in joyful celebration we acclaim. At the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion, he took bread, and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this, all of you indeed of it, for this is my body, which will be given up for you. In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took the chalice, and once more giving thanks, he gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this, all of you, and drink from it, for this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many, for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me.

SPEAKER_02Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection, we offer you, Lord, the bread of life and the chalice of salvation, giving thanks that you've held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you. Humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of Christ, we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit. Remember, Lord, your church, spread throughout the world, and bring her to the fullness of charity, together with Leo, our Pope, and Francis, our bishop, and all the clergy. Remember also our brothers and sisters who've fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who've died in your mercy. Welcome them into the light of your face. Have mercy on us all, we pray, that with the blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with Blessed Joseph, her spouse, with the blessed apostles and all the saints who've pleased you throughout the ages, that we may merit to be co-heirs to eternal life, and may praise and glorify you through your Son, Jesus Christ.
SPEAKER_03Through him and with him and in him, O God Almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours for here and ever.
SPEAKER_02Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil. Graciously grant peace in our days, that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your apostles, Peace, I leave you my peace, I give you. Look not on our sins, but on the faith of your church, and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will, who live and reign forever and ever.
