From the St. Ignatius Chapel at the Manresa Jesuit Spiritual Renewal Center in Pickering, Ontario. The National Catholic Broadcasting Council presents the Daily TV Mass.
SPEAKER_00Welcome to the celebration of the Daily TV Mass. I'm Father Hank van Mijel. The televising of this Mass is made possible by the contribution from three donors. The first is Ursula Solbulko and Margaret Sarota from Etobicoke, Ontario, in Thanksgiving for Irina Solbulko's 95th birthday today, for the repose of the souls of the members of the Solbulko, Dobinski, and Sarota families. The second are the members of the Holy Family Catholic Women's League in Madison Head, Alberta, for the intentions of the members and in support of the Daily TV Mass. The third is Kerry Euroka from London, Ontario. Our thanks to our donors for the gift of this Mass. In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen. The peace of the Lord be with you.
SPEAKER_07And with your spirit.
SPEAKER_00And as we have placed ourselves before the Lord on this Monday, again recalling our own weakness, our own needs for God's guidance. You were sent to heal the contrite of heart. Lord have mercy. You came to call sinners. Christ have mercy. You are seated at the right hand of the Father to intercede for us. Lord have mercy. May Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. Let us pray. Almighty, ever-living God, who govern all things, both in heaven and on earth, mercifully hear the pleading of your people and bestow your peace on our times. True, O Lord, Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen.
SPEAKER_03A reading from the book of the prophet Ezekiel. The word of the Lord came to me. Mortal, with one blow I am about to take away from you the delight of your eyes. You shall not mourn or weep, nor shall your tears run dry. Sigh, but not aloud. Make no mourning for the dead. Bind on your turban and put your sandals on your feet. Do not cover your upper lip or eat the bread of mourners. So I spoke to the people in the morning, and at evening my wife died. And on the next morning I did as I was commanded. Then the people said to me, Will you not tell us what these things mean for us that you are acting this way? Then I said to them, The word of the Lord came to me. Say to the house of Israel, Thus says the Lord God, I will profane my sanctuary, the pride of your power, the delight of your eyes, and your heart's desire. And your sons and your daughters, whom you left behind, shall fall by the sword. And you shall do as I have done. You shall not cover your upper lip or eat the bread of mourners. Your turbans shall be on your heads and your sandals on your feet. You shall not mourn or weep, but you shall pine away your iniquities and groan to one another. Thus Ezekiel shall be assigned to you. You shall do just as he has done. When this comes, then you shall know that I am the Lord God. The word of the Lord.
SPEAKER_02You forgot the God who gave you birth. The Lord saw it and was jealous. He spent his sons and daughters. You have forgotten God who gave you. For they are a perverse generation. Children in whom there is no faithfulness. You have forgotten God who gave you birth. They made me jealous with what is no God, provoked me with their idols. So I will make them jealous with what is no people, provoke them with a foolishness. You have forgotten God who gave you Alléluia. The kingdom of heaven is yes.
SPEAKER_00A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew. A man came to Jesus and said, Teacher, what good deeds must I do to have eternal life? And Jesus said to him, Why do you ask me about what is good? There is only one good, one who is good. I say, if you wish to enter into life, keep your commandments. The man said to him, Which ones? And Jesus said, You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, and you shall not bear false witness. Honor your father and mother. Also, you shall love your neighbor as yourself. The young man said to him, I have kept all these. What do I still lack? Jesus said to him, If you wish to be perfect, go sell your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come and follow me. When the young man heard this word, he went away grieving, for he had many possessions. The gospel of the Lord.
SPEAKER_06Praise the Lord Jesus Christ.
SPEAKER_00We've heard, if you're coming to church, you've heard this gospel reading probably a thousand times in different versions. And it is in all three synoptic gospels, Matthew, Luke, Mark, and Luke. And it is really challenges us, challenges us. What is our relationship with our possessions? I always, uh it leaves us a little dry because I wonder what happened to that young man who had those many possessions. What happened to him? Was there later on a conversion? Did he come to an understanding that his riches did not cannot bring him to heaven, that it cannot buy him any more time here on earth? When God calls us, God will call us. And so it is really about holy indifference with our possessions. And they will kind of control us. But there has to be a conversion to get away to go to that holy indifference. And that holy indifference, often we need some shock therapy. Some people they gradually convert, and some people need shock therapy. I needed shock therapy and it really put my nose into the messiness of life. And I had to come to that understanding that I had a business, I had a house, I had investments, that it really in the scheme of things meant absolutely nothing. So but I I got a shock therapy and I was able to give it all away, no problem, and so I embraced, I entered the Jesuits, they accepted me, and I took the three vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. And it gave me a new life. And in the first reading of Ezekiel, we have Ezekiel, he's talking about this shock treatment. Ezekiel is reminding or trying to tell the people in Jerusalem Jerusalem is going to fall. And he compares it to the death of his wife. God tells him that his wife would die and that he's not to grieve. And to be that sign that destruction will come to Jerusalem and there won't be time to grieve. The enemy will take over, the Babylonians will take over, and everyone has to take care of themselves. No time to grieve, but also a time to come to their senses, come to their senses. And actually, the response sorry psalm today, the response was you have forgotten God who gave you birth. A lament that someone really was struggling. But in that struggling, that's where the conversion can be. That's where really a conversion can be, and where we can see that all possessions mean nothing. Most people will come to that understanding on the deathbed. But it's good if you come to that understanding way before a deathbed. Yes, possessions are, we need to have some possessions, that that's there's no problem with that. But what is my relationship? What is my relationship? Can I give freely to those in need? Do I have to have the last, uh, the latest car, the latest computer, the latest whatever, the latest uh grand holiday, and a little bit more than my neighbor has. But it's about that holy indifference. And in holy indifference, we will find God and we will find true happiness. True happiness on uh on our universal calendar today, it's not the Canadian calendar, the universal calendar of the church. We have Saint Janine of the Cross at 1666 and died in 1736 at age 70. And she was fairly well off. Her mother and Christian uh good stores, and they were doing business was good, and when her mother died, she took over and the business flourished because she was just hardworking and had a good mind on her on her shoulder, and she was very well off. And actually she received some visions, and a pilgrim who came to the store once said to her that there would be a conversion and that one day she would serve the poor. This vision and plus the visions, and slowly her possessions meant less and less and less, just like in my own life, after I was uh my head, my life came to a head, my possessions became less and less important, and the good of others became more important. The church became more important, and eventually in 17 or in 1704, she uh actually started a group of women came together, she got her friends together, and they she opened her, she had a big house and she opened it up as a place for poor widows. Widows in that time, there was nothing left, especially if there were widows of working people and for prostitutes. And anyway, God works through all of that. She continued to work as hard as she was working in the store. And at her death in 1736, there were 12 communities. She had 12 communities that expanded in 20 years quite a bit, and serving those in need. And she, of course, she found she found that conversion in doing good, and she learned that all our possessions meant nothing. The greatest gift we have is of course our hands and what's between our ears. And all that God asks us is to use our mind and body for the good of others, for community. Often that, of course, that means in our families, our families come first, it's a first vocation, but also to spread that out into the community, through our church communities or whatever we're working with in our own communities to bring new life and help to those in need. Amen. Let us bring our prayers before the Lord. We pray for all those in the daily TV Mass Prayer Intention Book, we pray to the Lord.
SPEAKER_07Lord, hear our prayer.
SPEAKER_00We pray this month that Mary's assumption renews all hope of one day sharing eternal life with her and her son. We pray to the Lord.
unknownLord, hear our prayer.
SPEAKER_00With Pope Leo, we pray this month that in large city, often marked by anonymity and loneliness, we find new ways to proclaim the gospel, discovering creative paths to build community. We pray to the Lord.
SPEAKER_06Lord, hear our prayer.
SPEAKER_00We pray for all those who, like the rich young man, are deeply attached to the God-given worldly possessions, that they may realize that true freedom is found in holy indifference to our worldly possessions. We pray to the Lord. And for these prayers and the prayers in the silence of our own hearts, we lift them up to you, Lord. Amen. Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for through your goodness we have received the bread we offer you, fruit of the earth and work of human hands, it will become for us the bread of life. By the mystery of this water and wine, may we come to share in the divinity of Christ who humbled himself to share in our humanity. Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for through your goodness we have received the wine we offer you, fruit of the vine and work of human hands. It will become our spiritual drink. Humble spirit and contrite heart, may we be accepted by you, O Lord, and may your sacrifice in your sight this day be pleasing to you, Lord God. Wash me, O Lord, from my iniquities, cleanse me of my sins. Thank you. Pray, my sisters and brothers, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the Almighty Father. Grant us, O Lord, we pray, that we may participate wordily in these mysteries. For whenever the memorial of this sacrifice is celebrated, the work of a redemption is accomplished through Christ O Lord.
SPEAKER_06Amen.
SPEAKER_00The Lord be with you.
SPEAKER_05And with your spirit.
SPEAKER_00Lift up your hearts. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right and just it is truly right and just a duty and a salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks, Lord, Holy Father, Almighty and Eternal God, for just as through your beloved Son, you created the human race, so also through him, with great goodness, you formed it anew. And so it is right that all your creatures serve you, all the redeemed praise you, or and all your saints with one heart bless you. Therefore we too extol you with all the angels, as in joyful celebration we acclaim.
SPEAKER_02Holy holy holy Lord God of hosts, heaven and full of your glory.
SPEAKER_00Make holy, therefore, these guests we pray, by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall, so that they may become for us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. At the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion. He took bread and giving you thanks, broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this all of you and eat of it, for this is my body which will be given up for you. In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took the chalice and once more giving thanks, he gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this all of you, and drink from it, for this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me. The mystery of faith.
SPEAKER_02When we eat this breath and drink this car, we proclaim your death, O Lord, until you come again.
SPEAKER_00Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection, we offer you, Lord, the bread of life and the challenge of salvation, giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you. Humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of Christ we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit. Remember, Lord, your church spread throughout the world, and bring her to the fullness of charity, together with Leo or Pope, Francis or Bishop, the Order Bishops, the clergy, and the entire people you have called your own. Remember also our sisters and brothers who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection, and all who have died in your mercy, welcome them into the light of your face. Have mercy on us all. We pray that with the blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with Blessed Joseph, our spouse, with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages, we may merit to be co-heirs to eternal life, and may praise and glorify you through your Son, Jesus Christ. Through him and with him and in him, O God Almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours for ever and ever. Amen.
SPEAKER_04And at the Savior's command, and formed by divine teaching, we dare to say, O Father who art in heaven, hall be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses.
SPEAKER_05And as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
SPEAKER_00Deliver us, Lord, we pray from every evil. Graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Saviour Jesus Christ. Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your apostles, peace I leave you, my peace I give you. Look not on our sins, but on the faith of your church, and graciously grant our peace and unity in accordance with your will, who live and reign for ever and ever. Amen. The peace of the Lord be with you always. And let us offer each other a sign of peace.
SPEAKER_02Have mercy on us, Lamb God, you take away the sins of the world.
SPEAKER_00Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb.
SPEAKER_05Lord not only should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.
SPEAKER_00May the blood of Christ keep a safe eternal life.
SPEAKER_01Please join me now in this act of spiritual communion. My Jesus, I believe that you are present in this holy sacrament of the altar. I love you above all things, and I passionately desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come spiritually into my soul, so that I may unite myself wholly to you now and forever. Amen.
SPEAKER_00Pour on us, O Lord, the spirit of your love and in your kindness, make those you have nourished by this one heavenly bread one in mind and heart.
SPEAKER_09Amen.
SPEAKER_00The Lord be with you. And may Almighty God bless you, Father, Son, Holy Spirit. Amen. Go in peace, glorifying the Lord by your life.
SPEAKER_09Thanks be to God.
SPEAKER_01Our thanks to our donors for the gift of this man.
